Hello everyone, I wanted to ask what peoples' opinions are for a change to how cargo effects ships. Depending on the type of cargo and how much of it you have, it should effect ships in different ways. Example 1: If you are carrying a large amount of saltpeter, then your ships should explode more violently. Saltpeter is used in the production of gunpowder, it's chemical name is Potassium Nitrate. This compound is very volatile. Example 2: If you are carrying fir logs or other types of woods you should have a higher chance to catch fire, or higher chance for the fire to spread to another part since there is more wood to burn. This would be caused by a larger amount of burning wood would create more heat, which would allow the fire to spread farther faster. Example 3: Carrying a large amount of cargo should weigh your ship down and decrease the heel of the ship. So cargo ships would tilt less when in storms or going over weaves. Example 4: Rum or other alcohols should burn much faster, and be harder to put out since the alcohol would float on water. Although since the alcohol burns faster it would not last as long as a equal amount of wood burning. Alcohol would mostly catch cloth on fire since it takes more heat to set the wood ablaze. Realism must be compromised in a game but I would suggest something to be, maybe put to test. My suggestion is that when my ship, or the enemy's, is shot and takes on water, to have increased heel on the offended side. Would be possible to improve this effect ? I am sure it does not happen. For the sake of me being mistaken - and in truth the vessels not being compartmentalised like later age of steel architectures - I also appreciate other players opinions on this subject.
The indicator that displays the heeling of the ship should have positive and negative values determined by which side of the ship your currently aiming with your guns. Example: Left or Right broadside side: negative values for depression into the water and positive for elevation above the water Bow or Stern Chasers: negative values for heel to port and positive for heel to starboard
I love that the ships heel with the wind and I like that we have to amend our speed so that we cannot travel at full speed and fire upwind without range problems. However when sailing the Bellona you have to stop completely to be able to fire at a targets hull when it is upwind of you. Even depowering the sails does not work. This is not imho a real reflection.of the speeds a ship could sail whilst being able to fight. Under battle sails the ship had steerage way and could fight both sides of its ship. Currently this is not possible. Even Dead Slow is not sufficient to be able to hit an upwind target. Please look at this for a realistic effect.
