  1. I wrote a GIS years ago and converted xy screen coordinates to longitude and latitude. Why doesn't NA use Lon/Lat instead of a distorted xz (?) system. It seems the coordinate system doesn't agree with the google map Mercator projection. Why is this? I spent more than 22 days at sea looking for Bermuda and had to be sunk to end up in Somerset. I blocked out the coordinates for the search rectangle using known coordinates from discovered ports and it turned out to be significantly north of my search area.
  2. Either there is significant distortion in the Mercator projection on Google map, or someone has incorrectly documented the latitude of United States ports on the East coast. Bermuda is not south of Wilmington as indicated on the map under discussion here, as far as the game coordinates of Somerset conclude. Twenty two days at sea and rations were running short
  3. I have been navigating using the F11 key and estimating destination based upon previously documented port coordinates on the map: (https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=znKaQtPyLToc.kX_Q0oqZjfCY). Currently I'm headed to Bermuda using this method. I think it would be excellent to have a function key to take positions (navigational sightings) and then pull up a map to estimate a course to our destination. That is how it is really done. Sextant sightings could be limited to night and noon.
  4. I have the same experience. The blotches are light blue on the water and the lines are pixelated and seem to originate in the water and often lift off the water in sheets. What hardware are you using to run OW?
  5. Can anyone direct me to posts regarding hardware requirements for OW? CPU is a 2 core Pentium running windows 7 pro 64 bit with 4 G ram. Graphics card is a PCI express 2.0 Radeon 5700 series with 1G ram. It functioned well in sea trials, but struggles in OW.
  6. Diplomacy in potbs was in its heyday when Ubert Le Danois (Niklas Nikolajsen) was Viceroy for France. It played a significant role in balancing the game for nations that were under populated and made rvr greatly more interesting. I do hope there will be a mechanism for diplomacy (politics) between nations at some point in NA. For that to happen there needs to be a mechanism for politics within a nation, as well. Food for thought I hope.
  7. There should be no limit to tempory alliances for self preservation and no limit to entry into battle instances. Why should there be artificial limits that wouldn't reflect real life?
  8. If at all possible, you always rescue men adrift at sea. If they are enemies you lock them up, but All seamen are kindred.
  9. Wouldn't it be more accurate for a raking broadside to fire only those guns aligned with the stern instead of wasting shot along the armored side of the enemy ship. In reality, I think guns were fired as they bore while the ship passed astern.
  10. I have spent enough time testing to have the Santi, but can't say I am yet a master of sailing mechanics (even though I have spent many years sailing yachts). I still find myself making mistakes in the heat of battle. My point is that I am content to devlelop my skills while awaiting the timely introduction of open world.
  11. Where is the physical server, anyway? If in Kiev, well the country is in the middle of a civil war. It is heroic of the devs to even attempt this project under those conditions.
  12. Are you sure he isn't pulling yer leg, mate?
  13. How will we handle port capture if it is not in a remote location, in other words, it would be silly to think you could just sail in to Le Havre and capture it by sinking the defending fleet. There would be an army on shore that would be more than a match for the marines on board your ships. Most port attacks should probably be blockades that force some concessions from the defenders or cause loss of trade. Any thoughts on this problem?
  14. Wrong time period, though
  15. How about mirroring the real current weather across the map? There would be seasons and route changes to adjust to them. I have been playing potbs for years and I suppose I will play this game years, too, so I will experience changing seasons. Then there is the factor of opposite seasons in the southern hemisphere.
  16. You can only kedge when your anchor rode can reach bottom at sufficient angle to draw upon. Usually boats were lowered and oars manned. This is how the Constitution escaped a gank when becalmed.
  17. Does anyone here know how the guns were commanded on a single deck. Were guns divided among junior officers so that a partial deck could be ordered to fire by instructing the officer in charge to fire? I imagine during a broadside duel guns were madly firing and loading as fast as possible, so as to do as much damage as possible. I heard that a broadside was staggered so as not to tear the ship apart from a single recoil of combined guns. That would indicate some descrete yet coordinated command structure.
  18. Furling sails takes men aloft who would be at high risk if the rigging was targeted. This would mean a lot of crew loss from such activity. I can't believe they really had lines of men constantly standing on the yard arms waiting to furl sail in the middle of a fight every time an opponent fired a ranging chain shot.
