  1. I agree. There is a chance, if you fire decks independently, that you can use the ship name as the equivalent of a marker (err, honing becon). In truth, the kind of smoke generation that blinds (in game) you is 99% of the time from your own Cannons. Meaning, I do not garner alot of additional information from the time I fired, to the time the smoke clears (as we all can project where a ship will travel within a short timespan). Feedback received. Intent of the thread fulfilled. I am less aligned on the significance, but it is the developer's opinion that matters not mine! Through our discourse, both parties have given their respects. Adieu (I think France will be my nation of choice)
  2. All is cool! The post was possed as a reason to not have names ("I didn't care much until... ") . Just trying to determine what it was giving away in the photo by being visible. Keep the suggestions coming
  3. Minor in the grand scheme of things, considering that when you fired 1 second earlier you knew the captain was there, and 4 seconds after when the smoke clears.... Still there I'm poking some fun. But in all seriousness: what could transpire in the 3 seconds from firing to smoke clearing that the name gives away (now that you're reloading)? I'll agree and say "smoke should hide the name", but it is a Polish & Gloss effect... those things dev do when there are less important game mechanics to work on.
  4. Some one should start a thread on sailing lingo, and have it pinned. Leeward = ahead of the wind? (meaning wind compass points at it) Windward = behind the wind? (meaning wind compass is pointing away from it)
  5. Now that everyone can see the top 5,it is time for King maker mode: vote retraction, and place it with one of the front runners...
  6. True, it is an exaggerated turn. Probably should have started the pictures at the 3rd frame in. Or alternatively, at 2nd frame in and end with the 5th frame.
  7. What is faith if morale is not considered magic. The source of strong morale can come from: "battle toughness" (eg, TomPullings idea for duration sailed together) Loss of life Winning a battle Having their captain Good weather versus bad weather Even or Advantaged odds Faith (modifier is the same for all ships/players in game, unless a captain chooses modify it with with "man of faith" as example). Having a faith modifer is not such a stretch given that other modifers for crew and ship have been recommended: Commissioned officers: Captain (the Player): the most senior officer aboard the vessel. [Bonus to: crew loyalty, crew discipline, crew morale, Navigation, Sailing performance] Lieutenant (named NPC): Organisation of the ship and supervision of the crew [Bonus to crew discipline] Warrant Officers (named NPCs): Master: Navigation (picking the best course to sail) [Shorten travel times, decrease chances for bad weather] Surgeon: Healing the sick/wounded, preventing diseases [Attempt to heal the wounded/sick, lessen chance for sickness/epidemic] Boatswain: Sailing performance (and safety in bad weather) [Bonus to sailing speed, reduce damage in bad weather] Carpenter: Keeping the yards, masts, spars and hull in optimal shape; repair them if damaged [Reduce wear and tear, repair damage]. Gunner: Keeping the guns and smallarms in optimal shape [Bonus to gunnery]. Petty Officers (named NPCs ?): Sailmaker: Keeping sails, canvas work, lines and ropes in optimal shape; repair them if damaged [Reduce wear and tear, repair damage]. Cook: Fill the bellies of all those hearty seamen [Bonus to morale and lessen chance of sickness (if enough food)]. Master-at-arms: Coordinate hand-to-hand combat [Bonus to boarding actions, bonus to crew discipline?]. SOURCE: http://forum.game-labs.net/index.php?/topic/554-officers-crew-and-their-skills/ It surely is not a stretch that there can be an officer position associated with morale. EG, a man of faith. If officer slots are limited, and players need to choose how they modify...bob is your uncle. My last post on the topic
  8. Well, here is my "Try Hard" version (fun poke at myself). Truthfully, I don't have the skillset to make this look good. The great news is someone in the community, it the felt so, can take the idea and improve on it. A .GIF would be best I think. RAM - Awesome video. Everyone - Awesome technical explanations.
  9. Maybe not as clear as it could be. Essentially took ram's video & text explanation, and took a few screen shots as I executed it. Once to the left, once to the right. I'm not up to speed with terminology, but it should be tacking. Of course, if it is wrong... It should be fixed otherwise I still don't get manual sails or tacking through the wind. Lol Is it the second note about being able to turn without using rudder? Maybe I should not have that there... That was just something I learned in error while trying this. Is that called "wearing".
  10. I've watched Ram's vid a couple of times. Part of the learning process for me was mapping it out. This is by no means "good", but if someone else can benefit, so be it Sometimes you just need a little reminder sitting beside you until it is natural. (Don't look down on us newbs, lol). This assumes you have a QWERTY keyboard, and that you don't make sternway (go in reverse) during the turn. Go back to Ram's video for instructions on that! Note for new folks learning...I started these turns without full rudder. In actuality, you will have it on. The learning though is that you can turn your ship without the rudder (in the event your rudder is red, you are not entirely Dead in the Water).
  11. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2241005/Lost-Spanish-treasure-worth-500million-reclaimed-sunken-19th-Century-galleon-unveiled.html Treasures lost at sea (in essence, treasure hunt). Perhaps not the best example, but recovering artifacts for reputation.
  12. No. But sounds like a good measure of how compliant your crew was to following orders (versus mutiny). An indicator for Crew management? Great feedback, btw. PS-reread your post, good clarification at the bottom.
  13. You had some good ideas there for being in the "no" camp ... Trade partners, missions, what about donating bounty to increase standing and/or prestige... There is a huge PVE component that can be developed here (think sandbox... Meaning it is your choice to pursue or not to pursue).
  14. For the sake of understanding, how exactly is it silly, and describe how you feel it will degrade game play. As I've indicated earlier, I'm not invested in the ultimate solution... But feel that a yes/no response deserves some context that the development team can consider. Please read as a genuine inquiry.
  15. For all concerned it will create a Rift... Valid concerns, but perhaps overstated: Many games have faith in passive ways. I doubt the intent is to perform "holy rituals" add part of game play. Instead, it is to add another layer of depth and create content (either outside or as part of ship mechanics). Many games use it (eg, all of the Rome Total War series, Crusader Kinhs) and we don't think twice about it. Be open to the thought. Character development, role play, minor impacts (morale example), design of towns, resistance to port captures that results in unrest and additional cost to upkeep a garrison for control). Interactions with aboriginal people's, missioning (in the pve sense, not in the "religous-going-on-a-journey" sense). The goal is sandbox. That means opportunity. Which means different strokes for different folks. Just be open minded to different layers of game play that add depth. Ps-mobile phone, I apologize in advance for poor auto-correct and a lack of proof reading)
  16. Hi Henry, I cannot refute as I am no history major. However the first article of war by the Royal Navy specifically references faith. It seems to suggest that chaplains & etc did accompany ships. Without trying to be dramatic... It the VERY FIRST article before all others. It must have played some part: THE ARTICLES OF WAR 1757 All commanders, captains, and officers, in or belonging to any of His Majesty's ships or vessels of war, shall cause the public worship of Almighty God, according to the liturgy of the Church of England established by law, to be solemnly, orderly and reverently performed in their respective ships; and shall take care that prayers and preaching, by the chaplains in holy orders of the respective ships, be performed diligently; and that the Lord's day be observed according to law. --- Food for thought. It isn't a game breaker for me either way.
  17. Faith can be an extension of morale. If morale mechanics are implemented, I doubt that will be touted as magic. Having a "man of faith" on a ship should produce a moral bonus. This person would fill one of your available officer slots.
  18. And none was given. Your comments were tactful and your conduct superb.
  19. I was of the belief there might be a prestige or honor type of ranking. That it could tied to the captain's progression with the Admiralty. If this is true, then could not someone's high ranking contribute to their recognition? This would be in addition to the ability you've referenced. The difference, or enhancement, is that I can have terrible recognition skills, but someone might be the biggest fish out there and you'd need to be blind not to know them on sight... I can live with either scenario, but add my feedback for consideration.
  20. No. I don't believe so. A gank is multiple ships in an instance versus 1 ship, or number of ships, that are at a significant disadvantage to the point where it is impossible to achieve victory. Focus fire, my personal definition, is the coordinated fire of a group of ships at a single target. The goal, is to remove enemy ships from the field through focused effort in order to gain a DPS advantage and achieve victory. Focus can be applied in a "gank" or in a fight where you're out classed / shipped. But focus fire is not a gank.
  21. Alas, the Christian and the Broge (Dannebroge) fade into the limelight...
  22. I'm torn. At first I am thinking what a great idea. Then what about, stuff already mentioned, target calling or even whom to follow in fleet formation. -1 for telescope check. I think dropping enemy names if replaced with some other indicator (A-Z,?) is an idea to allow field target calling. (names get tricky when folks purposely use Cyrillic to make it difficukt) As crankey said, these captains definately knew each other's names and ships, so please leave friendly names. Though an argument could be made that the most prestigious enemy captains were also known on sight... Maybe your honor or prestige ranking gives you away...
