  1. Just blast away a the main mast and its sail and the thing is a dead duck.
  2. A Merry Christmas to you all!
  3. Agreed that it was better than Sharpe. The Hornblower series is very impressive indeed. The use of models is very effective and the limitations of the budget and lack of CGI actually works in the favour of the series because the production team concentrate more on the drama than on the swooping, aerial shots that are currently the fashion but which distract from the story. The use of locations is very well done too. I am not altogether satisfied with the lead actor though, he is OK but he isn't very good. It is a pity that Paul McGann wasn't a bit younger as he would have been great, indeed his presence as Mr Bush is always welcome. I wish that they had filmed a series later in Hornblower's career, and I still hope for one.
  4. Captain Blood - Errol Flynn The Sea Hawk - Errol Flynn Captain Hornblower RN - Gregory Peck Damn the Defiant/HMS Defiant - Alec Guinness Master and Commander - Russell Crowe Hornblower TV series was excellent in spite of the strange young man playing Hornblower himself. The two Errol Flynn films are the best directed and have the strongest stories, Master and Commander is the one most evocative in the Age of Sail and remains my favourite in spite of its flaws.
  5. Far be it from me to give small praise to the fighting qualities of the British tar, but their superiority in comparison to the French and Spanish in the Napoleonic Wars was due to their constant practice and experience. All nations were brave, but bravery and determination is hampered by lack of skill and practice. However in earlier periods there was less of a difference in apparent quality probably due to all sides having ships that were often at sea rather than shut up in port at least as far as the English and the French went (I am thinking of the Seven Years War).
  6. The Yankees built some fine vessels, and they were well manned. The above picture reminds me that it would be great to see the lateen-rigged vessels of the infidel in game.
  7. Great post by the OP. I would also add that it is immensely frustrating to find that when raking an opponent at close range my crew is too stupid to fire along at the enemy as each gun bears. Instead I get a spread of shot glancing at an angle or missing entirely when they should really be devastating. As things stand it is better to hit the enemy at the stern quarter rather than at the stern itself. An opponent who allows himself to be stern-raked should be punished for his error. At present I have no qualms about manouvering so that the enemy gets a free shot at my stern.
  8. You are quite correct, I was getting confused. There were a couple of Johann Christoph Bachs plus a Christian. I would put money on them all being good.
  9. Inigo Balboa, You have it exactly right there sir! I would also add Christopher Bach to that list as he was better known than his father in the 18th Century. I would also add Thomas Arne for his "Rule Britannia" and William Boyce for his "Heart of Oak".
  10. Glad to see there are Spaniards here. It wouldn't be the Age of Sail without them.
  11. I would welcome this. I too have problems with colours.
  12. The OP is correct. Not a single SOL was sunk at Trafalgar. Sinking after the battle is a different matter altogether, and I am disappointed to see that this point has been missed in some cases. As far as the game will go any ships sinking during a battle are automatically lost; they cannot therefore be captured or taken as a prize. The taking of prizes was a major part of sea-warfare in this period. The current situation where beaten ships sink in battle as a result of gunfire is one that I hope will be replaced by a more realistic one. Or should I say "convincing" rather than realistic, since the counter to the latter is to say this is only a game. Let's not be so pessimistic about this game, some very good work has been done here so far and it could become a really great game. Where we cannot be realistic because of the limitations of a game we can always strive for authenticity. If they have not already done so, I urge the Devs (and others) to think forward to the part of the game where battles determine the success of a faction and will have a bearing on strategy and the balance of power. During a battle struck or surrendered ships are temporarily lost to their side. The victors will capture any ships that surrendered and will have their own ships (that surrendered) restored to the fleet. Some vessels may subsequently be lost and some condemned. In some cases the ships can be sold and the money be shared accordingly. That sort of aspect to the game would enhance it and help in evoking the warfare of the period.
  13. I would like to be able to "lock fire" so that I can look around the ship in order to check course, maintain formation and avoid collision.
