I had an idea on how to make it easier to control troops.
Basically you could draw a line along the crest of a hill, the edge of woods, or any other defensible features. Any nearby units would automatically form up on that line. This would be similar to how you can crete rulers in desktop publishing programs, and then any lines you draw nearby snap to the ruler.
So instead of having to precisely send reinforcements to a specific location, you could just send it to the appropriate point on the line, and you could count on it taking the right position and facing.
Also, the LOS shading needs to be way more precise to be useful, My sense is that right now you're modeling this as a dimming in the ambient light in the area. This is wrong, the shading effect is not sufficiently precise, and it gets mixed up with the shading of the hills. You should stick an actual light source where the unit is, and project actual shadows around the battlefield.
