  1. *dreams of sails that actually look like cloth/canvas in Naval Action one day* The game is stunningly beautiful of course, but how absolutely wonderful would this be if they filled, fluttered, collapsed, snapped and hung like real sails?
  2. Quote: "Captain Cook's Endeavour is finally found 230 years after it disappeared: Legendary vessel used to sail to Australia was scuttled off the coast of Rhode Island in 1778 In 1770 James Cook discovered Eastern Australia in the HMS Endeavour The ship returned to England in 1771 after a three-year joruney and lay forgotten for years It was sold in 1775 but then purchased back by the British Royal Navy for use during the Revolutionary War In 1778, it was blown up just off the coast of Newport, Rhode Island to create a blockade during the Battle of Rhode Island The Rhode Island Marine Archaeology Project believes they have found its scuttled remains The group will formally announce their findings on Wednesday " http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3568740/Captain-Cook-s-HMS-Endeavour-United-States.html
  3. Not realtime tracking (as has already occurred in some player made apps), but a bi-monthly ship movement report published by the devs? Showing the movement of nations and different ship rates. http://www.shipmap.org You don't have to click play, give it a moment to load and then change 'colors' to 'ship type'.
  4. This very much good news, many of us are suffering from port exhaustion, we only do it because it is a must, the repetition and frequency has taken all the joy out.
  5. I'm still reading and re-reading the proposal and digesting it... my first reaction is that this is extremely complicated and is turning Naval Action into Port Action. This seriously disadvantages people who don't take part in port battles, it causes problems for clans and clan leaders. I don't have a solution for each and every part, other than scrap it and start over. The alliances thing is a good idea, but the land ownership thing is far beyond what Naval Action needs, I would leave that out completely. You will have a ton of green on green tribunals as all the players in Santisima's cue up to push each other out of the way to batter one of the tiny towers to get the most damage. Purchasing a special item to gain entry to parliament, hmm what's to stop everyone from just using this method if they don't want to bother with the rest?
  6. Hey Bungee, yeah no ship is invincible, that's just typical TV talk, was just sharing this for all the newer members who weren't around for all the old discussions.
  7. The entire documentary is good, they compare White Oak and Live Oak with a stress test starting at 10:00 and that transitions to a discussion about stiffness and then they conduct a scaled down (10" mock up hulls with a 4lb cannon) between Oak and Live Oak. 9. In reality the way the Trincomalee heels at full sail on the beam reach should be the default heel for all ships, the game is extremely forgiving in that respect. If this were done we would see people using battle sails often and for the duration of a close fight, as was historically done. Ships did not zip around fighting each other in circles at full sail. Stiffness should affect the rate of roll and the rapidity of return to an upright position. So ships without stiffness will not necessarily heel a lot further, but they will be slower to recover once heeled. This is my first post in over 6 months. Hi Maturin.
  10. Lots of people making authoritative statements about a ship they don't really know a whole lot about. I get it, the Constitution has become an extension of TDA, me and the US faction. You will never see such collective passion about whether the Bellona should have 18s or 24s on her 2nd gundeck will you? Or whether the Surprise should have only carronades on the gundeck. That's ok. Bottom line, per the rules of the game, the Constitution should have 42lb carronades on her spar deck if she wants. She carried 42's there after replacing the long guns after the Triploi campaign of 1803. They were then swapped to 32s. The President, the lightest built of the 3 big 44s, carried 42's on her spar deck her entire career and was captured with them. I know people are passionate about taking the Constitution down a notch and people are passionate about having her represented correctly, so let's keep it civil, me included. The internet is not the be all end all of ship research, most of these books about these 200 year old ships have not been digitized. You have to spend some time reading. "During her lay-up, plans were carried out to upgrade her battery and replace the 12pdr long guns with thirty-two 42pdr carronades on her quarterdeck and forecastle." -Sailing Warships of the U.S. Navy. Not digitized. This is a much sought after tome by ship model enthusiasts, it is $80 when you can find it. "42-pdrcarronades first replaced long guns on spar deck after the Tripoli campaign." - The 44-gun Frigate USS Constitution: "Old Ironsides" Easy to find, about $47 The Frigate Constitution and other Historic Ships by Magoun, talks about the 42lb carronades quite extensively, it's about $90, not digitized Here is a free one Interpreting Old Ironsides by Charles E. Brodine Jr., Michael J. Crawford, Christine F. Hughes produced by the Naval Historical Center http://ibiblio.org/pha/IOI.pdf Here is an easily searchable and non-reference source that talks about the 42s, it's common knowledge and not really debated among people who know the ship, I'm surprised so many are confused about this. http://www.historynet.com/uss-constitution-the-legendary-survivor.htm

    TDA connie

Been off for several days, so Live Oak Connie is faster now? Will check this out.
  12. NorthernWolves

    TDA connie

No, a TDA connie would have the correct HP and get that speed with Live Oak Don't fret, this is old news, I get outrun by live oak Santi's and Pavels at the right point. We tested it several times, OW and in battle.
  13. Because she was hit with 8 carronade balls is a ridiculous reason to claim that the limited range of the carronades had nothing to do with the defeat. It is demonstrably false when the details of the battle are looked at. Where is that version from, an Osprey illustrated book? If you look at the details (below) we see that they twice tried to close with the Essex and were driven off and during those attempts is when they were hit with the carronades. Initially they pulled into the harbor but Cherub fell behind and Phoebe found herself next to a ready Essex, and Hilyard disgracefully and cowardly fumbled himself out of the situation and Porter should have cut loose right there. So she was beaten by two ships she could not close with due to her damage before the battle started and was severely handicapped by having an entire gundeck of carronades against their long guns. Any other version of the battle is simply false.
  14. Good to know it will be coming back, I used to enjoy deck sailing.
  15. Grape and ball in the same load. Mixed upper decks, longs and carronades. All that real stuff please.
  16. Man where was this when we were testing proto-Ow with no sounds. I think I'll go to sleep with this on tonight. http://ship.ambient-mixer.com/sails-of-glory
  17. The economy desperately needs more depth and crafting, so hauling and selling gunpowder, shot, cannons and carriages would add a lot to the game. However ships would carry thousands of cannonballs and thousands of pounds of gunpowder, so basically enough to see you through quite a few battles at least. No more difficult than loading up with repairs in port and it would add to the economy. So repairs, cannons, carriages, gunpowder, all types of shot as craftable would be a great thing.
  18. So the answer is she can't catch any frigates and thus gets caught by SoLs? Sounds like a ton of fun. And there was never an epidemic of Connies sweeping the sea back when she was fast, there was an epidemic of trincs griefing lynxes however.
  19. Ah the super connie strawman rears it's head. That strawman is easy to attack, so it gets repeated. Yawn. So out of all the ships in the game, you mean to tell me that the only one that has to be speed nerfed and HP nerfed for 'balance' is the Constitution? I've never suggested that only the US faction gets the Constitution, that would mean we'd have no 74s. 74>Constitution with equal captains. I made a spreadsheet that shows how the Constitution currently has 3.3 hit points per Tons Burthen, while the Bellona and above get 6.1 per Tons Burthen and higher; and Constitution gets 1.6 hit points per freeboard foot and the others get 2.6 and higher... and I"M ASKING FOR A SUPER CONSTITUTION? Just stop with that. It's ridiculous. And dishonest. That's like in your plane game if the only fighter that gets 150mph taken off it's top speed 'for balance' is the ME 262 and then you point out how that is wrong and people are saying 'Oh Jodgi wants a super Me 262' and people who even say 'Well the thrust of those jet engines were actually counter-productive to speed you see, so it actually was that slow'. During this past year of testing, it went from being 2,010 HP per side to 4,658 difference from the Bellona. I can only take so much. For the difference in tonnage between the Constitution and Bellona (39), those tons of difference are currently valued at 199 HP per ton. For the difference in tonnage between the Trincomalee and the Constitution (520) those tons are valued 0.42 HP. So by me pointing that out is not me wanting a 'super connie', by people defending that is them wanting a 'cheated Connie' and a 'super trinc'. Pretty nailed on there. And when and where and how is a Constitution too much for a SoL to handle? I'll jump in a Victory and wreck 2 Constitutions in my sleep. You want to talk imbalance? I've taken out Sols with frigates. You may have too, it takes the full hour, but it's doable. Ask Prater what he's been doing in his Surprise. Anyway this is all totally pointless and just rehashed nonsense now, did you not see where admin has said that the gaps between ships (due to not having a lot of ships) during testing is now going to be changed to historical levels because we have more ships coming? That's pretty much why we have the proposal thread going on. The game is headed in the right direction. PS What the Rakers or TDA like, want and dislike is irrelevant and anecdotal.
  20. At least you're honest Jodgi. You bring a lot to the community, it's nothing personal, I promise. Just remember that for a lot of us who have played every shitty age of sail game for the last 20 years, spent our youths reading silly one-off age of sail adventure comics in the late 70's and early 80s, read every crappy adolescent age of sail action novel and then progressed to reading every historical tome we could find. And to finally be on the cusp of a game we never though anyone would make... Well to hear rational, logical, game improving appeals to history (history being the only reason we are here with this game), get shot down by people who admittedly don't care about such things, is a little bit maddening. Just a little. The strawman of 'we want unbalance' needs to be dropped. Anyway, pirates, be careful what you wish for, you could quickly see yourselves having history applied to you while it is not to others. You are going to need 74's and 100 guns as long as every trader bob can build one in 3 weeks of play and has no upkeep to stop him fro sailing it 24/7. There are ways to sort that all out and have the game more historical, but you will forever be up against the guy who wants to only play in his Santisima, doesn't care about history or the age of sail, he just is here because he can have the biggest ship with the most guns with little effort. That'll have to be addressed eventually.
