  1. Thanks to all. Here's a little contribution of my own, regarding the text mentioned in the quote above. https://archive.org/details/royalnavyhistory01clow
  2. http://forum.game-labs.net/index.php?/topic/2533-a-short-guide-for-novices/ There ya go mate. Happy new year!
  3. I've got that one down...but I'd like to learn the rest now!
  4. Splice the main brace! Happy New Year!
  5. You can start with the Yacht, but in the sea trials, as things stand, you need to sail the Lynx to start your way to the bigger ships.
  6. I realize that as a newcomer many of my ideas have already been covered, so i apologize if this has been discussed before. I also realize that most people would balk at the thought of learning the signal flag alphabet (or whatever you call it), but i would love for it to be implemented so that the squadron leader can run up signals giving orders etc... Oh, and a signal gun too please! As a hardcore history fan, i would love it even more if that was the only way to communicate while in battle...
  7. Does anyone have a copy of these? I'm particularly interested in the diagrams showing tactics and maneuvers for the line of battle.
  8. I'm aiming for something much more detailed that what is currently in the game (which I have played). Things like mast rake (or is that simply built in to the ship?) various possible solutions for the rigging, etc.
  9. I see these topics in nearly all forums, but this one doesn't seem to have one yet, so I'll make one! The idea is simple. Say hi, tell us a bit about yourself. Help us connect a person to your screen name. So, I guess I'll go first. I'm Fred, samba_liten in-game. Same on Steam. I was born in Sweden, but live in Ukraine. Never sailed in my life. I am here as a history buff, and eager to learn about sailing as part of the experience. Who's next?
  10. 1. I believe wipes have been promised at various stages. 2. As far as I know pay to win will be avoided. There will, however, be premium ships for sale. In fact, one is offered as a reward for players who purchase at this early stage. A yacht. She's gorgeous too!
  11. In racing sims there is often a whole series of screens where you can change every little detail of your car. I admit I don't know much about sails and sailing (or cars for that matter), but i would love to have something like that. If you read O'Brien you will find numerous sections discussing various changes to ships, in dock or at sea. I wish for both, available in the appropriate place. I think each ship should have a default state, for those of us less knowledgeable, but be configurable for those who know more, or are willing to learn. Rewards, of course, would be better speed, or maneuverability, but there would be risks as well - i.e. fly too much canvas and you could loose a mast (or part thereof -i would love to be able to shoot the top of the enemy's mast off!), or you might loose speed due to your ship being pressed down rather than forward. Also, rather than having mast repair simply restore the original state of the ship, i think jury rigging would be a preferable solution as long as the ship is in combat. Replacing the mast should have to be done once the danger has passed, and should take considerably longer! Also once we have crew management (that will be in, right?) Being able to transfer men from, say, the guns to the sails or vice versa, or deciding where to get enough men to man the pumps would be a fun set of decisions. Thoughts?
  12. Erm..one more thing - To chat press enter, type, then press enter again to send. To exit chat press esc. And one more... to enter aiming mode, right click when looking in the direction you want to fire. To fire - space-bar for a single ranging shot, or left mouse button to fire a whole broadside. Last one, i promise... if someone could scare up a screeny with some explanations for the damage indicator... my editing skills are pretty bad. Basically though, the 4 bars in the top left of the screen show your ships armour. If you look carefully you will see that they are surrounded by an outline of a ship, facing right. That means the two vertical bars represent your front and rear (bow and stern [i hope i got that right! would be embarrassing otherwise...]) armour, and the two horisontal bars represent your left (port) and right (starboard) armour, top and bottom bar, respectively.
  13. I voted no. I think the visual indicators we have now work very well to let you know how badly hurt the enemy is. However, there could be more; Broken cannon (would be cool if they could break loose and roam the decks, creating huge risks for the crew and the ship) Stove in gun ports Dead crew Broken rigging Broken booms, etc (as opposed to simply a broken mast - perhaps a useful indicator as to how close your mast is to going by the board). Sails falling (creating a major fire hazard, and/or drag, also possibly masking some of the guns) I'm sure there's more...
  14. I say devote the resources to ships and the world first. Although i would like to see detailed towns, not to run around in, but simply to make each town different from the others as you sail into port. Some historical buildings would be nice, as would historical layouts of the ports themselves. A picture or two to show what I mean. First Oslo (smallish town at the time, i believe), then Hamburg.
  15. Can I add that if the water graphics freak out on you, simply change the graphics setting to low for water and you will be able to play.
