    POTBS

Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag. A game. You assume the role of Edward Kenway and have a brig to sail. Funner than a box of puppies, a bag of chile cheese fritos, and a bottle of rum all at once. The ship fightin isn't very realistic though. The boarding is outstanding. The story is worthy of a really good novel.
  2. John Paul Jones was a really, really good captain. It seems that he had a big pair as well. To sail in English waters and commit mayhem and madness really required big jimmies. If we get the merchantman in game, and fit it out well, it could be a ship to fear. Handled well, of course. Thanks for posting the pictures too. When I started my research, when I first bought the kit, I couldn't find all that many pictures. I read that there were no ship plans or descriptions.
  3. Boy, that model sure looks better than the one I'm slowly working on, the Monogram kit. I too like the red and black color scheme. I'll have to do that. The painting suggestions with the kit are rather silly. BonHomme Richard or some kind of converted merchantman in game would be great for privateers. On POTBS I liked the Mignone privy version. It all depends on the sailing qualities of the ship. Slab sided merchantmen were the bain of most captains that I have read about. Of course, Captain Jones did well with Bonhomme Richard, but in his fight with Serapis, his old ship was damaged too badly to save.
  4. I watched the first season of Black Sails and enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to its return in January. Starz is already advertising. My problem. and it is a small one, is that when they showed a long shot of the ships at sea, the wind was always from perfectly from the aft. Never from any quarter at all. Always in the direction they wanted to go. Still the show has all the requirements for someone who grew up in the 70's and saw all of the exploitation movies on HBO. I did watch all of Crossbones. It got better if a bit far fetched and even weird. I enjoyed it. Their schooner actually had trimmed sails. The story even, dare I say, intriguing.
  5. Hey oldnavy, Hello. Good to see a Royal Navy man amongst us. A real world sailor as well. I'm an old U.S. Marine. One military man to another, I salute you sir.
  6. I do indeed agree with you Destraex. Normally the captain gives an order such as, "Two points to larboard." This of course means that some of us may need to learn exactly what a point equals, my self being one of them. At this point I do not know the exact mechanics of the game and how a captain controls the ship. I would like to steer on occasion though. Let the leftennants work their gun crews. And yes I wrote lieutenant as it is sometimes spoken. Still, I can't wait to play with a ship again and learn how to handle her. I shall pre-order on Monday(payday). Right now I need to go service the lav on a CRJ 200. My glamorous job in the aviation industry.
  7. Maybe a bad question but I'll ask anyway. When we are formed and active, will we have vent or team speak.

    POTBS

Should we get back on and sail a bit. Havn't logged on in months. Maybe we can all discuss Naval Action in chat and scare the Flying Labs guys.
  9. I do a lot of flight simming and I know a lot of real pilots and find that constant control input is necessary. In a ship this is necessary as well. One must make small course adjustments due to lee way from wind or currant. Full left or full right rudder only will not work. I'm sure you all have read captains admonishing their quartermasters "Steer small, Damn you!" or "Yer sails luffin, Damn yer eyes?" Why just the eyes? I can think of better body parts to damn. I digress. AD rudder command id good when actually steering the ship. Rudder position was determined by the helmsman and his knowlage and feel of/for the ship. There was no rudder position indicator that I know of. I may be saying stuff that has allready mentioned since I tend to skim. This post is a bit late and after the fact as well, but I needed a place to write Steet Small! and Damn yer eyes!. I do want the option of helming my ship and to do that, small course corrections are needed.
  10. Well, sounds pretty good. Count me in. From what I'm reading, it sounds more like this game will be closer to a simulator than an MMO. Ship against ship and captain against captain with no magic spells. That is what I had hoped for with POTBS. Hornblower took a big Spanish Galleon with a frigate, clever thinking, and good gunnery. That is what I'm looking for here. To be able to do so with a good group of people is an added bonus. As for PvP, as long as the devs in this game don't make It too difficult to replace a ship, I will be more than happy to participate. I was PvP'ing before I finally quit POTBS and learning a lot, but then again I had a lot of deeds and wasn't afraid to loose a ship. It was fun and educational. There just weren't no one to PvP with. Econ is boring but must be done so I have no problems with that. My biggest problem that would effect the soc, it that I sail at weird hours. I work overnights so logging on at 0400 mountain time is not unusual for me. Oh, I like frigates. I like to skirmish. I want to play this game real, real bad. I want to be a part of a fun soc. Won't come soon enough.
  11. I kinda prefere PVe but I do my part for the soc that I am a part of. I sucked at PvP but was getting better. When I sailed on POTBS, i was with the Royal Guard. Mostly econ. That got old, but I participated as much as I could. I did love talking on vent with others though. I play weird hours and due to my job and my wife I can not always log on. Some days when I play I am hot and other days I just plain suck. I don't like to be treated badly as I am sure most people don't. I just want to plain have fun. I can have a warped sense of humor and being an old Marine, I sometimes cuss like one. I am respectful of others though and expect the same in return. My experiences on POTBS were good and bad. My experiances with my old soc were good and bad as well, sometimes very bad. I want to be in a soc that loves ships and sailing and fighting. I want to be friends with others who genuinally love the genra and can forgive bad spelling. I do not want to be chummy with people who are nothing more than MMO players who only want to win and dominate. If this is a soc that can fulfill my requirements then count me in and I will do my best to fulfill the requirements of the soc and those in it. Forgive the rambling but i really hope to enjoy this game and wamt to be in a good society. POTBS got old and sometimes stupid. If I ask too much. Please let me know.

    Ahoy Mates

I have been posting like mad over the last two days yet I have not introduced myself. My user name, as you can see, is Hyperion74 taken from Richard Bolitho's ship. I love nautical fiction and love wooden war ships. I am an avid gamer and have played most of the nautical game that have come out. I am really looking foreward to this one. I miss the forums from POTBS and thus far have been enjoying this one. It seems that many of you know the difference between a fore top'sl and a main course.I look for'ud to talking ships with all of you. I am a very, very bad typer so please excuse tiopeeose. or typos. I try to be funny so if it's a bad joke or in poor taste, I appologize in advance. I may ramble. I like to write. It kind of sounds like some of you are European. If I am wrong please correct me. This I think is great. On POTBS I met a lot of Europeans and Aussies and found that quite thrilling. I am of the United States. I shall end it here by saying that I an enchanted to meet you all and hope to sail together in the future. Please say Hi.
  13. Battle at Sea. A DK book. Good pictures, good text. Starts from the begining untill now. Fighting Techniques of Naval Warfare 1190 to Present by about half a dozen writers. Published by St Martins Press. Theres bound to be some big fights when we start playing this game. May be of use. As for fiction, I have read many of the books mentioned. Bolitho is one of my biggest heros, the man I try to be like, but I really love Lewrie. New book in January or Febuary. Of course I love them all.
  14. I been playing AOPA 2 lately as well. I seem to remember that it had an instalation file. Try to unzip it to your desktop. You can always delete it later. Open it and look for the exe. file or install file. It has been a while since I have done this and my memory is bad. If this don't work for you, post a message and I'll play with some and come up with a solution. I'm a flight simmer and do a lot of zip file work. Get 7zip if you don't have it allready. It's free and really a good program.
  15. Play Assasins Creed 4 and collect all of the sea shantes. When you sail, yer lads sing them. I love Low Lands Away. You can find them on Youtube. Just type in sea shantes. I also like Whisly John. Of course my favorite is Old Ship Mate. That's because I'm a Master and Commander junkie. There is a new show on STARZ called Outlander. The theme is bassed on a song called Boat to Skye. Give it a listed and watch the show, if ya aint. Not nautical, but awesome none the less.
  16. 1951 Captain Hornblower. Virginia Mayo is HOT. I just watched one called The Buccaneer with Yul Brynner and Chuck Heston. Not a lot of naval action...get it... but it is about Jean LaFitte at the battle of New Orleans. I really enjoyed it. Yul was absolutely cool. Treasure Island with Eddie Izzard from 2012 was a good version. Mupper Treasure Island. Of course I have to reiterate Master and Commander. Lastly, always remember what Yellowbeard said,"Ya gotta put a ed in a bag cause they tend ta oooze." We miss you Graham.
  17. If you find one tell me about. I have not seen a kit of a British 74. Heller may have a french version but I am not sure. I am and have been a scale modeler and I do build plastic kits of wooden war ships. There arent a lot out there. You can try a wood kit, better detail and better selection, but thet are really spendy. I look a lot on E Bay. I just looked and they have some nice wood kits from Model Ship Ways and Latins. Of course, clever painting can look like wood.
  18. Let me first brag on behalf of my country... U.S.S. Constitution is the greatest wooden war ship ever built. Humphreys was a naval genius unequaled in the history of ship design. Diagnal Riders, need I say more. That said, these models look fantastic. The french built some great ships. Satiismo Trinidad was a very aweome first rate. Always wanted to see that one. The british 74 was the ship of ships in the Napolonic era. I.E. Richard Bolitho's old Hyperion. Even though a 28, All of us nautical fiction fans want to see H.M.S. Surprise. I really like the Brig. I really want to sail the brig. Is the Schooner a top sail schooner. Nothing better for piracy. Are the guns on the main deck of the Trincomolee frigate smashers? Oh Victory would be lovely as well. Sorry about the rambling. Really want this game.

    I am in awe!

I have been following Naval Action since I saw it on steam. God I want to sail...No I NEED to sail. Assasins Creed 4 was a nice little bit o sea action, but the brig drives like a speed boat and the guns re-load in lke 4 seconds. NEED it to be more real. NEED to tack. NEED to shoot other ships. NEED to board Need a frigate. DO I SOUND DESPERATE?. I look for'ud to conversing with like minded wannabe tars. I REALLY look for'ud to good digital sailing again.
  20. Any POTBS vets? How about SEA DOGS? If you have played sailing games, please coment. This game is supposed to be multi and I want to meet who I may be sailing and fighting with, or against, and what experience has been had. ON THE UP ROLL
