  1. Oh, another thing... In the U.S. the term wheelhouse has entered the present day venacular. I prefeer the term "Quarter deck".
  2. I have a young lad in my crew, new hire, who just got out of the U.S. Navy. He is a good kid, but the reciently seperated squid didn't remember the date of the Navy birthday. Another ex-squid didn't know many nautical terms at all. Still another ex-squid, a something or other chief, retired, I really don't know of his nautical because we spend most of our time with squid/jarhead putdowns. A naval tradition since 1775. We need answers from ex-squids if there are more heer to get a feel for what they teach young recruits. When I was a young recruit in 1983, our DI's tried to convince us that the big squad bay windows were port holes and the front of the squad bay was the quarter deck. They never mentioned a fighting top or a futtock shroud, or a clew lin, or a cat head, or a top s'l for that matter. I guess that maybe some things are lost with time. Except for people like us.
  3. "Take that man's name!" "Damn yer eyes" "Yer not supposed to be smoking that!"
  4. First off, Post 100. The Question: I have read a lot of nautical fiction, so much so that I now use the lingo. I refer to my crew at work as the lads. When there is a 35kt+ wind I refer to it as a three reef topsail wind. I often go to starboard or larboard. Etc. This of course could be mental illness. How many of you guys do this? If you do how many of you get funny looks from others. HOW FAR GONE ARE YOU?
  5. Here is the easiest solution to avatars. Take a piece of paper. Draw a picture of what you want as avatar (Not sure if big blue two legged kittys are acceptable) Tape said drawing to your computer desk. (thumbtacks acceptable) There you go. AVATAR.
  6. Sorry, King George II,s Victory, the one that sunk in a storm in 1762, I think. The previous one to the existing Victory.
  7. A few years ago, a salvage company found the wreck of Victory in the channel. They were commissioned by the British government. My memory is bad and I can't remember the name of the company or the name of the show that featured them. My question is, did they salvage anything from the wreck or was it decided to just leave her where she lay. If anyone has info, please share.
  8. I sailed the Mignone Privateer. Always had fun in that ship. It is akin the Bonhomme Richard. Also loved the Acheron frigate. I also sailed the Macedon a lot. If I remember correctly, that was like a 64. The biggest ship I had was the Wendon. I kinda hated it. Too slow. The Cerberus the the most fun. Turned on a dime and was fast. That was a true skirmisher's ship. I see myself as a frigate captain. I won't say dashing because I'm bald and fat. Fun thread.
  9. That looks like a book that I would read. Thanks for posting.
  10. I told my wife about the 111. She got a real kick out of it.
  11. This game is going to be good isn't it. Like minded people trying to smash each other to match wood. It don't get better. A swig of rum with you sirs. I really did do just that and I think I shall have another. Damme, that were good.
  12. Man, a lot of you lads have a better grip on history than I do. I salute you gentlemen.
  13. There is the whaler Charles W. Morgan which Howard may have used to build a set. Although Wier used thr HMS Rose/Suprise for long shoys, he did have a mock up built and I think put on gimbles to control his shots. This is all sceculation. I'll present more info as I get it. Hell, he could even used Surprise. She passed a a whaler and to my knowlage, she still belongs to one of the studios who made M&C. Oh, I love movies and the making of them.
  14. Well, ON, that's pretty cool. Sorry I missed your reference. love history and it's heros. I must have English DNA in me as much as I admire Nelson and despise the french. Sorry french people, genetic. Mir, I am a landlocked lubber as well. I live on the western edge of the northern great planes of the United States. I did live a few miles from the Atlantic when I was young and didn't appreciate it enough. Then again, I love the prarie and mountains just a little bit more than the beach. It's awesome to be aquainted with lads from other countries. Hope to talk with you guys on team speak. I can speak heavily accented german english from a woman who was in my life as a child and english english from years of Monty Python. The USMC birthday if coming up and I will post it.

    POTBS

I was a beta tester on POTBS. It was great at the start. It really pissed me off that they never upgraded the graphics. I also didn't dig the MMO aspects and lack of realism in regards to the time period. That was about all we had at the time. There was a lot of fun to be had at first. I spent many hours sailing and made a few friends. I'm hoping for the same here, but better.
  17. We probably wont get a "First look" untill it's about to hit theaters, unforunately. I follow movie making closely and that trailer was the first I had heard about it. I suspect that much of Essex is CG.
  18. It does have a good represention of a Nantuckett whaler and Ron Howard is a very good film maker. Whales do swim on the surface, The story of Essex, which is true, has never been told in a theatrical drama. Though I abhor the practice of whaling, there was a lot of good drama derived from the industry in the 17 and 1800's. Agreed, there have been too many film versions made of Moby Dick, the last one that was made by NBC really sucked. (they sailed a sloop in that one which is far too small for make a profit) The two with Gregory Peck, the 1956 in which he played Ahab, and the 1998 in which he played the preacher, Patrick Stewart played Ahab, are the ones to look at. I still plan to see In the Heart of the Sea because it is a Ron Howard film and it has a ship. The story of Essex was intreauging as well. I have seen at least 2 documenterys about it. Just my oppinion.
  19. No one mentioned it on the forums and I am very late about it myself. Oct.21 was the 209th anniversy. I knew that it was this month but had to check on it. Even if you don't think much of Admiral Lord Nelson, he is still considered one if the greatest naval stratigist who ever lived and Trafalger was a brilliant victory. He is a hero of mine. I salute you, Sir. I also missed talk like a pirate day, which slightly saddened me.
  20. I have to second the statement about 200 chanels and nothing to watch. Thanks the gods for DVR.
  21. This is one of my absolute favorite books. I just sit and stare at the pictures for hours always findng a new detail or two. Enjoy.
  22. NW, tell us how you really feel. Good writing. Fun. I like TV, yet my house is still of books that I have read. Thoughts wandering. Ice cream. 1972 Buick Skylark. Oh hell, I'll stop.
  23. Lets just build a HoloDeck, replicater included for beer, rum, and hardtack.
  24. Cochran, my dear friend, while rum is far more appropriate, in the real world good rum is expensive. Beer will work. It don't even haf to be good beer. Then again cheep rum could be served so never mind. One could even feed the helmsmen the counterfeit Twinkies. BONUS!
