  1. Nope they didnt. The French experimented with the idea but its totally incapable on a floating platform. Fires happens mostly because flying wadings hit flamable materials. They often got stuck between the parts of standing rigging. The balls themself can not cause any kind of fire unless they hit something thats on fire already. There is a reason why the only light/ fire on the ship was that in front of the powder-room. Night battles rarely happened. Long range shots can not set a fire. A fire may have certain possible threads: burning steering ropes -> disabled rudder burning rigging and of course the wood wich is everywhere on the ship. If a gun is loaded a fire can ignite it and a uncontrolled cannonshot goes off. The gun is disabled. (burned ropes, burning carriage all the stuff..) All the other stuff I am waiting on the new build to argue with. But the ideas here are all reasonable.
  2. tadaaaa there is one totally "realistic" damage model of a car. The engine calculates damage on a physic they coded. pretty impressive but well..
  3. Sry for late reply. But well I thought I can save those files on my PC wich are shown on the webpage. Ill skim the net for any further infos and well.. maybe I find some plans anywhere. I suggested this ship as a super-lineship because it was often modified. It may add to gameplay elements such as choosing cannons and sizes etc.. From what Ive read most new 1st rates were inspired by the french "Océan-class ships of the line". Until the late 19th century nations upgraded this sort of ships with steam engines to be competitive. (altho they were obsolete in about 1860/70+-) Originally built as a 118 gun ship and finally upgraded with 136 guns.. thats a huge number imo. Ill update this post when I get new info. Maybe I find cheaper plans and buy them myself..? dunno edit: I found plans altho I dont know how -legal- they are O_o.. They look very detailed and very high-res..
  4. I just came across this beast of a ship: Le Commerce de Marseille. Built as the first ship of the "Océan-Class" ship of the lines. She was considered one of the best 1st rates of her time. Armed with 120 guns and still - in terms of 1st rates - pretty seaworthy and maneuvrable. She was laid down in Septemer 1786 and finished in October 1790. The french fisrt armed her with 118 guns but soon modified the armament and upgunned her to a max of 136 guns. The most significant difference between her and The Satissina Trinidad: no need to construct an additional gundeck. There are multiple websites where one can buy shipplans. Those on this page are the best I saw for free. I will get more informations once I am back from vacations. http://gerard.delacroix.pagesperso-orange.fr/118/plaquette-e.htm Another class of ships we should be able to play is the "Tonnant Class" ships. French two deckers, armed with 80 guns. Built from 1790 until 1834.
  5. I have one suggestion to do: let newcomers be unable to open new threads at this stage of your game's development. Sometimes people open a whole new thread with a question wich is either beeing answered bevore or belongs in another, currently open thread. I mean: just make newcomers have to post two or three posts. It discourages lazyness
  6. For everyone's information: We already have: - slop - shooner - brig - HMS surprise - heavy Frigate(38) - getting USS Constitution - Bellona(74) - HMS Victory choose wisely =)
  7. this game is not about fleet controlling. Its about captaining one particular ship. You sail in 1st person view, have to shoot, sail and manage your crew. The zoom only goes out until you see the head of your mast. Fleet action is not about us controlling multiple ships. Its us controlling one vessel as a chain in the line for example. This answeres at least some of your questions The game will feature a lot of variations between gundecks. Means you can choose the caliber and art of weaponry. Carronade vs Cannon for example. All economy stuff you ask about is beeing discussed in the forums. Check out the threads and find your answer there.. well.. there is no answer at this stage of development ATM we test arena like conditions. ship to ship combat. Its very early alpha testing.
  8. well.. that cannon was wayyyy over saturated with decoration haha.. thanks alot for the images. Altho the gun was made in 1685. The decorations are just-- stunning. I wonder hoe much time one had to spend on such a barrel.. By the looks of it.. was this a 12 pounder? That number is engraved on the barrel. The plan I have is about a naval 32-pounder around 1800 so if anyone can help me out there.. that would be epic. my progress so far Not finished by any means but I feel I am getting better
  9. Hello all, I am recently working my way into 3d modeling and started a french 32 pounder. Now I wonder: - British naval cannons all have the crown as symbol on the bore so everyone knows: this cannon comes from a royal gunsmith. - The spanish made the same with their ofn royal symbols.. - A french 1707 gun looked like this: http://www.history.navy.mil/cannons/Glossary_01.JPG - but when the revolution happened there was clearly no way the french gunsmiths will put the french king's insignia on ANY kind of weapon.. So what did the french do? Did they simply make smooth barrels? Or did they use any other kind of symbols? I dont know.. But I will apreciate any kind of help on this subject And if I am totally wrong: this is the perfect place to right me.
  10. The chapman's book gives the information you can find in this thread. Sadly no more detail on it. You can find all the data needed on the hull but rigging is not mentioned. The chart of all ships and their armament, lenght, draught etc does not say a word about armament. The category in wich the yacht is listed is called "Pleasure Vessels". It even tells "no oars". edit: i was too late
  11. as you have the charham book Id say sailplan No 12 looks good. Its a cutter-rigging anyway imho.
  12. I dont think this: Santisima Trinidad (1769, 140-gun Ship) I doubt this leaves place for interpretations. When I think of the Victories handling right now it will be nearly impossible to turn that brick trough the wind. And it should be that way. I would never want to sail this mass at a lee-coast as the ships lee-way WITHOUT sails already is massive.
  13. Hi there. This question was thrown by the devs heren: http://forum.game-labs.net/index.php?/topic/487-january-news-uss-constitution-launched/ They asked us what sounds reasonable. check it out and tell us your opinion
  14. Just to mention: I can provide you with dozent of plans from "architectura Navalis Merchatoria" I own this book if there is some copyright issue when getting data in the internet. this webside has quite a lot of the ships displayed in this book: http://www.sjohistoriska.se/en/Collections/Archives/ChapmanNet/ChapmanNet/Drawings/ The gif shows the datasheet of the very first bookpage. It contains lengths, cannon numbers planned, waterline, draft etc..
  15. Isnt this worth a question to devs rather than a post in this thread? For the gunnery I can tell you its just fine. And I am confident that they will add more to the gunnery topic when the development goes on. There were really good suggestions and until now devs are really happy with all the nice proposals from the community. I do not feel that I am overstrained in the fights right now. The management of guns, sailing and yard trimming gives you something to do, other than just klicking your mouse over certain skills. It makes sure you have a goal in the game. And the goal in a naval combat game should be to be the best Captain around. I will strife for it and I am certain to NOT suck out hehe. Everything they implemented thus far is a very nice concept with a goood fundament. And i DO like it. If you played "Sea Dogs 1&2" you may have an idea about complete control of your ship
  16. I like this one here very well: A snow with 22 guns in total. It may fill the gap between Brig and Frigate. HMS Ontario: (Added 9 January 2014) May 1780 - Oct 1780 // 22 Guns http://www.brethreno...upperdeck02.jpg http://www.shipwreck...tydrawing02.jpg http://farm5.static....bfeb677bc_o.jpg I give this one and Brigand's Brigantine my vote for sure
  17. point is: this is another 74 ship of the line. We actually have the typical prototype of a "modern" 74 gunner. The french invented them and the brits adapted. I would not be surprised if the plans from HMS Vanguard are the same than the plans for HMS Bellona since they are the same class of ships and build withing 17 years difference.. TBH I dont like the Bellona model too much right now. But I guess she will be finished sometime. the devs dont want too many ships of the same kind. Not like potbs aparantly. Maybe you look for a 2nd rate or a beautiful old 3rd rate with 64 guns. Or you check ships for the upper end of the classification. We have the surprise, 28 guns. a frigate, 36 guns. 44 guns constitution. Maybe we need something in between (40 or 32 gunners) or even a ship like the Brigantine or bigger.

    POTBS

you can youtube it. there is a channel with all stuff wich can be seen until now. I think this is the video your looking for

    POTBS

Just for the record: IF I dont want to spend money on POTBS I can still earn ANY KIND OF SHIP I like and ANY outfitting I fancy. Its pay to win if I MYSELF feel forced to buy stuff that gives me a noticable advantage or beter said that gives me the ability to even out odds over my enemy. And until now I dont HAVE to pay real money for this special porpose. Some other guys spent money on BSNs yes. But it was not my own money. I simply go to AH and buy me some BSNs if I so desire. Any ship can be obtained with DBs since they get listed in the AH. Its not pay to win cause I am not forced to pay money on it. I am not! Since F2P is out I could have lived on without spending any real money. I did pay them a few bucks. but only because I am LAZY and I am not willing to fleet hours and hours in front of SC. Also I am no huge shipbuilder with 100 slots. I make ships on my own and provide my soc. Thats enough for my daylie pvp living. I own all Rates but the sovereign. why? Cause portalus patched some "OP" ships with their totally OP range of... 600y base.. What am I supposed to do with such crap?.I can skill for more range and also fit for it. But I loose a lot of potential. A ship with no real use in PvP is uninteresting for me. (exept trading and lvl ing porpose) All I can say to the fight: NOOBS with 1st rates still dont stand a chance against SKILLED players. Period. Its the game and its GOOD that way. You have to improve to have fun. a challenge and I like it. I play for nearly 4 years now and still. The group Im regulary in is not the best of all. We ARE damm good. but we still get roflstomped because of stupid mistakes and all. The fight was a 8 or 9 vs us 10. 10 in frigs vs 8 heavy ships including 3rds and 3 1sts. guess how good a 1st rate can run from chargins Frigates? not so good. And even 4k structure and reps will burn down over time. We get them rates and get sunk in return. It was totally worth it. (grammar I know) Just to say: This game will get a skill-based shipcombat. Nothing about clicking buttons and seeing the magic happen. And so far I totally like what Ive seen. So much from me. I will always continue my thought of POTBS and pay2win. (Its not) Ofc. Portalus is constantly working on ruining the game even more. Therefore I would NOT be surprised if the bronze cannons become OP "SOME"-day.

    POTBS

potbs still is no pay-to-win game. You can obtain every simgle item needed for ships and fittings with ingame money. Ofc. for some you need horrendious ammount of DBs but still: you dont need any "UBER"-ship since you can sink those with your "non prem" ship as well. For an example: dons trolled us with Victories over and over again.. WE then simply charged them with frigates. sunk all their shiny expensive rates and were happy with it. We did it twice and had two weeks of non-trolling.
  21. British ships always carried a devision of so called "Marines". (ger. meaning is Sea-Soldat wich nails their meaning pretty good) They were trained soldiers and seamen in one person. They were placed in the crow's nests and on the quarterdeck to kill officers and the sailors at the wheel. This sounds like one would not need any more seamen but the way they were trained made them worse sailors than the actual seamans on board. And: I think this idea is great. And even better when Naval Action will have boarding introduced. (big muskets were no use in a boarding where one could hardly handle a cuttlass)
  22. Ahoy there, The most important game-publishing platform is Steam. Its the only platform I use to check out new stuff. For the Screenshots I list them from high to low prefered: Pic 1 (very intense shipcom) > Pic 14 (DAT storm =)) > Pic6 (thats ingame grafics? awesome!) > Pic 10(shows fleet action possible) > Pic 12 (ship and those waves in the foreground! awesome!) Now I reverse. best so worst ("ugly" category): Pic 7 (soo untidy. british ships were known for their clean decks!) > Pic 9 (that looks unfinished. wheres crew and what about the junk on deck?) > Pic 3 (not a good example for what your grafic can do) > Pic 3(unspectacular) > Pic 17 (what is that ship doing so close to that tower? and it looks like artwork rather than grafics) Just to mention your looks on deck: There used to be racks for cannon balls. They were all around the ship's bulwarks. And when the crew was sent to quarter they will have cleared the decks from every bit that lies/stands in their way or can create lethal splinters when beeing hit by enemy gunfire. On the other hand you can find a lot of water buckets and barrels with fresh water so the crew can refresh when having a break from action. The desicion to vote your pictures was pretty hard. They are all very nice. Some are awesome and some are "only" good. But they all look VERY neat! They represent a game with a well fundament. Keep your work up. Till now everything looks astonishing! I like it and there are many enthusiasts wich will like it, too!
  23. well.. The Cpt. Jack Aubrey's Pain scheme was lord Nelson's paint-job. he made the yellow strokes famous. That means you can find the HMS Surprise's paintjob on HMS Victory. The exact colourscheme was more a captain's choice. The richer the captain, the more he can spend on the Ship's paint and gold-inlays/plates.. Altho the Navy didnt deliver all sort of colours. black and white was most common in the Napoleonic war
  24. At first there would a factor like crew XP.. and then there is a huge problem I see personally it as gamebreaking when I have a ship I want to test and sail it to pvp and I come across an enemy who sails his ship for like months and has an expert crew. He will simply murder me with no big losses and I can look how I will come out of that mess.. You should propably make a thread concerning that issue.. I have no fuzzy feelings about that O_o
  25. when the crew is at stations there should be a high penaltie to lowering and hoisting more sails. Handling to a certain degree is still possible. But every maneuver that requires to trim the sails will take long, too. That may mean you can turn like 10 to 20 degrees to both sides like always and then begin to turn pretty slow. Turning through the wind should "maybe" be totally impossible or result in a backward movement when sails are backing against the masts.. Those are my thoughts of it. After all its a game and you have to consider the penaltion and balance it so its not a game-killer.. Btw: there should be a delay when I send the crew to other stations. a few moments when they relocate to the guns or braces etc..
