  1. Like Bramborough already said: You don't have to finish off the entire enemy fleet. Just 6 ships. And that is more or less easy to do, depending on the difficulty you're playing on. Fireships can work really well because of how close together the enemy ships are. If you use ships that are given to you for that scenario as cannon fodder and use them to group the enemy ships together and then send in a fireship you can end up burning down half the enemy fleet with just one ship. After that the rest is just easy pickings. Make sure you use the best cannons you can afford for your own SoL and make sure they have the maximum crew allowed along with good boarding weapons. Capture some enemy ships, keep ships that you need, sell the others for prestige or money and you're set for the next battles. I think i captured 3 Ocean class 1st rates in this battle (and some other SoL) and used those along with the free Victory class 1st rate you're given for the Battle of the Nile.

  3. The big problem isn't the wrong classification. I haven't played the game for a couple of months so i don't know how accurate what i'm about to say is. But when i was playing the game the much bigger problem was the weird progression of aquiring ships. From 7th rate to 6th, then to 5th (not an Endymion or Leda class) and then 3rd rate. I would only see Endymion or Leda class ships after i had already captured 1 or 2 3rd rates. So i hope that weird progression has been fixed because it is something that can make a new player quit playing this game very easily. Sure, you can capture a 3rd rate with 2 or 3 5th rates but it would be much easier to do if at least one of those 5th rates would be an Endymion or Leda class.
  4. While it would be nice to load just 1000 men onto a troop ship and then create whatever number of units you want, i think that would tip the balance of power way too far in favor of the player. The unit limit on troop transports exists for a reason.
  5. Let's say you have 6pdr Desagulier cannons on your ship. Those cannons have a reload time of 100 sec. Now add 25% to that and you have a reload time of 125 sec. So when it comes to the rate of fire -25% is good and +25% is bad. With accuracy it is the other way around. There the +25% is good and the -25% is bad.
  6. Little correction Ramjb: 32 and 42pdr French Re-bored have a weight of 24, the 32pdr Woolwich has a weight of 23 and the 42pdr Woolwich has a weight of 27. So the low weight of the French Re-bored is probably the reason why they can be put on a 3rd rate Ardent class.
  7. I just checked in my current british campaign, where i was able to capture the Arrogante in the Fireworks mission. Which is the first time you will encounter a 3rd rate SOL. You are right, you can only choose from 24pdr cannons for the lowest gun deck. However, you can put 32pdr Congreves on it (you find the research for that in the second part of the techtree) as well as 32pdr Woolwich, 32pdr French Re-bored and 42pdr French Re-bored. I think this is a bug but it could also be intentional. The british campaign isn't finished yet, there are still some missions missing. So as far as the british campaign in its current state goes, the biggest ships you will be facing are 3rd rate Ardent and Bellona class ships. 4th rate ships are very rare and you might only see one during the entire campaign. Or none at all. In the US campaign you will see a 2nd rate Barfleur class ship with 90 cannons for the first time in the mission A friend in need. You will not see a 1st rate SOL, at least on the enemy side. In the last big sea battle you will see a french 1st rate but that ship will be on your side. But according to a statement from one of the devs, the US campaign will undergo some rework. Maybe we will see an enemy 1st rate SOL after all. Who knows?
  8. Yes, i am sure. Select the third gun deck, then scroll down the list of cannons until you see the 32pdr Armstrong and if there are enough of them in the shops stockpile you will be able to buy them and put them on your ship. Don't go for the 42pdr because they are very expensive.
  9. They are not too heavy but you can only put on them on the lowest gun deck. You have the top deck, the middle deck and the low deck which is right above the waterline. And the 32 and 42pdr can only be placed in the lowest deck.
  10. 1. Not always true. There are situations in which it is beneficial to give up that advantage. Not to mention that if the enemy has cannons of a larger caliber he might still be able to hit you. Sometimes i give it up because i either need to protect a transport, need to capture a transport or i want another enemy ship between me and a much larger enemy ship like a 3rd rate SOL. 2. Only if you come close enough to enter musket range. And if the enemy ship is a SOL and you have only a 5th or 6th rate. Otherwise i use manual aim to land my hits as close to the waterline as possible. And i try to aim at the middle. Either the ship heels and sinks (it looks like it just falls over to one side) or the magazine blows up. The damage to my own ship will be minimal. Or i use this opportunity to take down a mast or two. 3. I do this when i want to capture a ship without boarding. Blast it from both sides with broadside after broadside in order to decrease morale to a point where the ship simply surrenders. Works even better if you use manual aim. Why? One of your ships goes for a mast, the other blows holes in the hull. If a mast goes down the enemy will lose lots of morale due to rigging shock and the more holes you blow in the hull the higher the chance for an artillery or crew shock which also decreases morale by a lot. The enemy will surrender much faster that way and you will actually take less damage. 4. Wrong. See what i wrote under 3. Adding to that, if the enemy ship is a SOL and you only have 5th rates, use chainshot first to slow the enemy down. Then box him in with 3 or 4 ships and open fire from bow, stern and both sides. The ship has nowhere to go, gets hit constantly and morale will plummet and the ship will surrender. I have stopped boarding SOL with my 5th rates because of this. Saves me a lot of money on crew replacements. You can put 6th rates in front of the bow and stern but i would recommend 5th rates for the side. 5. And when you want to capture a ship. 6. The rudder mostly breaks after a broadside to the stern or if you use manual aim to hit the quarterdeck of the ship. And getting behind the stern of a ship is much easier when it is slowed down significantly. So chainshot first (or round shot to take down a mast) then a broadside to the stern. But at this point you can just do what i wrote under 4. 7. I prefer doing this to the frist ship in the line of battle while using chainshot. Why? If i go after the last ship in the line of battle i only take down one ship. If i slow down the first ship in the line of battle i slow down the entire line of battle. I actually did this in the Treasure Fleet mission in the british campaign. You only get this mission if you capture the Arrogante in the Fireworks mission. You have to capture at least one of two transports which are guarded by 2 Dedaigneuse class frigates and 3 Ardent class SOL. The frigates will break up their line of battle, the SOL won't. So i put a fast ship in front of that line, have them chase it und zig zag around so i can put 2 or 3 broadsides with chainshot into the lead ship. That way i slow down all 3 SOL instead of just one. 8. Carronades can be good but i think Congreves are just better. You can unlock the Congreves in the british campaign in the second part of the techtree and in the US campaign you have to unlock Industry 3 in the last part of the techtree. 9. Not quite there yet on my normal difficulty playthrough but my guess is yes. Which actually makes no sense, especially in the Treasure Fleet mission. Yes, the frigates should go after the enemy directly but the SOL should stay with the transports. At least one SOL should stay with the transports and chasing down enemy ships in a line of battle is very stupid.
  11. In the US campaign you unlock the 18, 24 and 32 pdr cannons in the last part of the techtree by researching Industry 3. Which means you must rush through the techtree to unlock this tech ASAP. In the british campaign it depends more on what type of cannon you research. You will notice that right from the beginning you will have access to 32 and 42pdr Armstrong and Borgard's cannons. For the long guns, Congreves, Woolwich and French Re-bored cannons you need to research the right tech. The Congreves can be unlocked early because they're in the second part of the techtree but everything else is, just like in the US campaign, in the last part of the techtree. You have access to the small caliber Woolwich cannons right from the start, the tech for that can be unlocked immediately after the initial battle. To unlock the 18, 24, 32 and 42pdr Woolwich cannons you have to unlock the Brass Large Guns tech in the last part of the techtree.
  12. Yes and no. You wrote that all you need is 18pdr until you get a 4th or 3rd rate ship. And i said that in the US campaign the only way to get those is by unlocking Industry 3. My point being: it is very hard to get those 18pdr unlocked in the first place, not to mention that the initial stockpile in the shop might just be enough to equip one ship. So you have to look at the Congreves too because if you don't, you don't stand much of a chance against a 3rd rate with your 5th and 6th rates. And a ship that can use 18pdr Woolwich can also use 24pdr Congreves. More damage, better rate of fire, better penetration and less weight. The only two points against the Congreves are the higher price and the range of 950 yards. But losing 200 yards of range shouldn't be that big of a deal with 5th rates. If you were to use 18pdr Congreves instead of the 18pdr Woolwich you would get the same damage, same penetration, even more weight reduction (which allows for a bigger crew or even 9/12pdr on the first deck, more upgrades) and an even better rate of fire than with the 24pdr Congreves. I think you should go with the cannons that give you more damage coupled with good penetration. There are situations in which penetration values are more important than the damage but this is what the Desagulier and Borgard's Long cannons are there for. If you can't afford Congreves than go with Woolwich cannons but if you have the money than why not use the Congreves? And the higher rate of fire compared to lighter caliber cannons (like the 18pdr Woolwich) and the same caliber cannons (like the 24pdr Woolwich) is just icing on the cake. And let's not forget that all those cannons will be unlocked with Industry 3 in the US campaign. In the british campaign you will have access to the 12pdr Woolwich cannons right from the start if you research them. But everything higher than that, as far as the Woolwich go, only comes after researching Brass Large Guns in the last part of the techtree. The Congreves can be researched and used long before you unlock 18, 24, 32 and 42pdr Woolwich cannons. And let's just agree that the 18pdr Armstrong isn't even a viable option to begin with. So with the way the techtree currently is and how long it will take you to unlock the 18pdr Woolwich you might as well just use the Congreves. In the US campaign you will have access to the Woolwich and the Congreves after unlocking Industry 3 and in the british campaign you will get the Congreves long before you get the 18pdr Woolwich. What weapons are available plays a big role in which weapons you end up using. And my last point is when you're fighting a SOL you want as much damage and penetration as you can get. And the 24pdr Congreves gives you just that when compared to the 18pdr Woolwich. Like i said: if a ship can fit 18pdr Woolwich then it can also fit in the 24pdr Congreves. If it can fit 12pdr Woolwich, you can use 18pdr Congreves. Why not use a cannon of a higher caliber with more damage, better penetration, better rate of fire and less or the same weight?
  13. All that doesn't change the fact that in the US campaign you have to go to the last tech tree to unlock the 18, 24 and 32pdr.
  14. You're basically talking about two different things: the flavour text and the actual stats of a cannon. When buying new weapons, be it muskets or cannons, i go by the stats and not the flavour text. And as far as the stats go, the 32pdr French Re-bored (along with the 42pdr pendant) are the best cannons in the game. That can of course change but for now it is true. The only cannons coming close to the French Re-bored are the Borgard long. I'm not sure but i think they have a higher price and weight, not to mention a longer reload time.
  15. Always be careful when your own ships are in your line of fire. I rather hold my fire than to risk hitting my own ships. For boarding actions i try to send two ships against one, from both sides. That eliminates the risk of friendly fire.
  16. Tell me about it. Like i said in the thread about captured 3rd and 2nd rate ships, equipping those costs you lots of money. Here are some cannons i like to use not just because of their damage but also penetration values: You can use normal carronades for small ships like Briggs and Sloops or you can use the 4pdr/6pdr Woolwich. In fact, the Woolwich guns are some of the first i research in the british campaign. For frigates i like to use the Congreves. They allow you to put a higher caliber of cannons on your ships and they don't have a high weight. High damage, fast reload, less weight and the only downside is the range of 950 yards but on a frigate that's not too bad. The Congreves are in the second tech branch for the british campaign but in the last branch for the US campaign. Which makes it very hard to get those but at the same time it is very important because otherwise you will still be using 12pdr when you're about to do the Battle at Yarmouth where the first SOL shows up. I cannot stress enough how important it is to get the Congreves in both campaigns but especially in the US campaign, where that tech unlocks all 18pdr, 24pdr and 32pdr cannons. For my SOL it depends on ship, the cannons that are available, how much money i have and the campaign i am playing. In the US campaign 32pdr are the biggest cannons you can buy. So i always like to use the 32pdr French Re-bored. They go on all SOL, no matter what. When i run out of those it comes down to cost and weight. You can either choose the 32pdr Woolwich or 32pdr Borgard Long. The last one has the same range and penetration values as the French Re-bored but a slower rate of fire and more weight. For the british you could go with 42pdr but i think that would be way too expensive especially on normal and hard difficulty. Even on easy i would advise against it unless you really can afford it.
  17. Is anyone using the sail repair kit or the more hp for sails and mast too? Sometimes the enemy goes for your sails or hits a mast with a lucky shot. I am thinking about getting rid of the faster reload upgrade and replace it with something else.

  19. Interesting idea, i have never thought about it. But i also have never used those repair kits. Time to test a few more things i guess.
  20. I hope it is a bug. The Cerberus class is not a frigate i like to use. In fact, i replace them as soon as i can.
  21. There are two battles where you have to field your SOL and fight a good old fleet battle. In one the british bring a 2nd rate Barfleur class and i think it was 7 or 8 Ardent/Bellona class ships. The second one is the last battle of the war and you're facing 10+ SOL, once again led by a 2nd rate Barfleur class. In both battles you will have control over french SOL, four for the first major battle and eight for the last one, including a 1st rate Ocean class. Make sure to have at least 4 SOL that you can bring to those battles. In fact, sell everything else in order to get the money you need to put cannons, upgrades and crews on your SOL. Maneuvering in those large battles isn't easy. When you're controlling 8+ SOL in a fight against the same or higher number of SOL, the good old line of battle where each ship follows the other is your best bet. Wait for a good moment to break the formation in order to take advantage of an opening in the enemy formation. My Ardent and Bellona class ships had the reduced cannon weight, faster reload, faster speed and better turn rate upgrades. On my Barfleur class i also added an upgrade to improve the hp for sails and mast. You can put a better armor upgrade in but i would advise against it. If you're using cannons with good penetration then you shouldn't need more armor. Besides, those SOL already have a bunch of it. A bigger problem is figuring out how to deal with those SOL: sink them or capture them? Since these two major fleet battles will be the last battles before you are send off fighting pirates a couple of years later, there isn't much point in capturing those ships. You can capture the Barfleur class in the first battle and then use it in the second one against the british. Otherwise i would just sink all the ships. Or capture them, whatever lets you take them out faster. I captured the Barfleur class in the first battle and then used it in the second one. I also captured the Barfleur class in the second battle but that was just pointless. I would advise to use manual aim, aim midships near or below the waterline and hope for a magazine explosion. Crossing the T of the enemy whenever possible and viable should of course also be done. But this was all on easy difficulty, on medium or hard you might want to get the extra armor upgrade for your SOL for these battles.
  22. The game isn't finished yet so i am testing things. What is possible, how much does it cost and so on. Besides, when you do have a 3rd rate SOL you will want to use it against other 3rd rates. And since 3rd rates have a really large amount of armor, along with lots of hp for sails and mast, you will need the biggest cannons you can put on there to make a dent in the ship. So in my US campaign i have put 32pdr french re-bored guns on the three SOL i am using. And those are the best cannons i can put on there at a much lower cost compared to other 32pdr cannons. The cannons on the first deck don't really matter that much, put some 6pdr or 9pdr woolwich in there and it will be fine. But the second and third deck need the best guns you can put on there. The Barfleur class goes even further because you can put 32pdr congreves on the first and second deck for a lot of damage at close range along with 32pdr french re-bored on the last deck. Or you can put 32pdr woolwich cannons in the second deck for more firepower at long distances.
  23. If you think 3rd rates are fun wait until you capture a 2nd rate. In my current US campaign in the beta branch i have one 2nd rate Barfleur class with 90 cannons, three 3rd rate Bellona clas with 78 cannons and three 3rd rate Ardent class with 68 cannons. All Bellonas and one Ardent are trophies and the Barfleur and two Ardent class are in use. And it is like you said, you must put a good crew on those ships, good officers and the best cannons and upgrades you can buy. Putting one ship of the line into service for your fleet costs a lot of money (and i mean a lot) but it is worth it. Expect to spend around a 100k for cannons, upgrades and crew. And for a 2nd rate it is even more than that. I think i spend over a 100k just for the cannons of the Barfleur class, add the costs for five upgrades (yes, i said five), a good crew and you're looking at well over 160k.
  24. Do you put a green crew with no experience on it? Do you keep the guns on it that it had when you captured the ship? If the answer to both questions is yes then there is your explanation. For instance, when i captured a Diana class frigate in my current US campaign i put 32pdr congreves on it. Those cannons allow a 5th rate ship to deal some serious damage to a 3rd rate ship, like the HMS Lenox in the Battle of Yarmouth. You have to research the better cannons and that can take time or you do what i did and try to rush the research for better cannons. I also put an upgrade on the ship that allows for faster reload.
  25. I did exactly that pandakraut but like i said in the first post, nothing was helping. But as i also described, i was dealing with enemy infantry that had 270 or 310 men in them and right off the bat charged at me like the AI did on legendary difficulty in UGCW. But i would suggest to make another thread about battle strategies for the Battle of Bunker Hill. Or basically any battle. That will make it easier for new players to find relevant information without having to read every topic in order to discover relevant information. I just checked the Battle of Bunker Hill on easy difficulty in the 0.6.54 beta and it is now normal again. There is a very lonely british artillery unit sitting right next to the US infantry on Breeds Hill but other than that it is now fine.
