  1. You'd have to smush together 'Empire At War' and 'The Old Republic MMO'. While the potential is admittedly tantalizing, it could go horribly, horribly wrong. Ideas CAN go too far....
  2. You hit the nail on the head with that. The payout for capping a 1st rate in a rear admiral mission is close to 300k. If you buy a victory for 3 million, you can make the investment back in 10 hours.
  3. Frigates in particular are a very poor barometer for ship prices. 5 blueprints drop off the frigate, one of them being the Ingermanland. Everyone and their grandmother was after that blueprint, and shipbuilders were conceiving exceptional frigates like couples in a log cabin with 2 feet of snow outside and nowhere to go. They were literally dumping exceptional frigates on the marketplace because they simply wanted enough money to cover the purchase of 4 mid-grade notes, so they could try again until the blueprint dropped. The money tap in this game is high at the moment. It's out there for very little effort. Shipbuilders realize this and are charging the grind monkeys appropriately.
  4. I wish you the very best in moving past the hideous 'Caracas Fir Log Scandal' which is making headlines even as far as Mortimer Town. And by headlines I mean the 2-minute conversations that frequently happen in the men's room of the local rum tavern. Arrr did ya hear about the Mary Lou? Struck a sea turtle off the coast. Came apart at the seams, she did.
  5. Iceman and myself (don't call me Maverick) were talking about this topic in Teamspeak and we both agree this is the most appropriate movie quote to reference: We both like the idea that some people will never back down or accept defeat under any circumstance. We say good for them. Means they'll always be up for some good fights. What I've taken away from all this is that Spain either lacks the population or the coordination to defend such a large network of ports spread all over the map. Getting hit by the Dutch down in South America, the Brits in Central America and the Yucatan, and the Colonies in Cuba and the gulf is frankly too much for anyone to handle. This was a dogpile on the Dons, pure and simple. I'm fine if the Spaniards NEVER come to the peace table. I don't need someone in Teamspeak to virtually prostrate himself at my feet and say: 'I surrender! No mas, no mas!'. I wouldn't expect anyone to. And I wouldn't let their behavior dictate national policy of any kind. I'd let actions dictate that. If Spain attacks the US Coast, I'm sure we'll retaliate, except New Jersey. If Spain attacks New Jersey, I'd offer to lend them any support I could. That whole state is an armpit. You will never find, a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. As far as Colonial Shipyards [CSY] goes we're not going to aid in the capture of any Spanish ports going forward. If any Spanish ports are currently in pirate or British hands and pose a threat to our current borders, we'll capture those ports with the understanding that we won't defend them against a Spanish attack. Spain is free to reclaim them in the hopes then can begin to rebuild. Like us, hate us, it doesn't bother us. POTBS helped give us a pretty thick skin. We've always been seen as the aggressors / villiains for as long as we played the game. So to Spain I say galvanize your nation however you can and we'll see you on the open ocean very soon.
  6. Easy, they drank white rum. Anyways, if anyone didn't see the season finale's climatic battle, I recommend watching the last 15 minutes of the show. http://www.free-tv-video-online.me/player/vidbux.php?id=vmluy2ddx58n

  11. For those of us who remember 'Jaws'.....Farewell and Adieu has a much creepier context. Especially when sung by Quint.
  12. On the subject of possible ships to put in the game, are the 1820 US lineships under consideration? Example is the USS Delaware. Crew compliment: 820 men Armament 30 long 32-pound guns 30 medium 32-pound guns 2 x 32 pound carronades

    Black Sails

A new television series had its premiere last week. I have to warn you though...it's trashy. Black Sails http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eP-vbDtyMXw
  14. Customizing your captain's cabin can have applications as a: RvR reward PvP reward Crafting element token of career advancement PvE mission reward In every case it's the type of reward that doesn't further divide the haves and the have nots. And vanity pieces are always a good way to keep players coming back for more.
  15. That's a bit of a Pandora's Box but a great question. On the one hand, when looking at the USS Constitution it was one of six frigates to be built on the Joshua Humphries model 44-gun frigate. So while the Constitution itself was the most famous out of the six, there was the Unites States, President, Congress, Chesapeake, and the Constellation. If 6 teammates were rolling around in that frigate, it WOULD be pretty cool to see each of them take a different name to represent all 6 of those frigates. Most of the most famous ships in history weren't one of a kind in design, they were one of many that were built off of the same design. It was the ship's actions and service record that distinguished them apart from their siblings. So while I'm respectful of the iconic status that the ship's name bestows on your individual designs, I'm open to a certain degree of compromise. On the other hand, seeing XXPwnmasterXX on the back of the USS Constitution would completely ruin my immersion. It was the same in POTBS every time I saw a pirate sail by with some variation of 'Jack Sparrow' as his name (Sparrow Jack, Sac Sparrow, Jac Sparoww...)
  16. I take no responsibility for unleashing the greedy Brogsitter upon the forums. Everybody clutch your wallets. To the original poster: I think it's a little early to start a forum war between PvP players and PvE players. A good idea can come from anyone. If an idea is well thought-out, and articulated properly so everyone understands the reasoning behind the principle, then it will be well-received. Whether it is implemented or not is another matter, but it will at least be given fair consideration. If a post is simply an attention grab or stinks of a private agenda, I imagine it will go into the waste bin where it belongs.
  17. Just going to keep adding to this post as I find them. http://fatboxsoftware.wordpress.com/2012/02/15/264/
  18. When I said 'information' I guess I should have been more specific. Visual information is what i had in mind. How close do you have to get before the rendering makes it possible to tell if a ship is listing. Not a hard-coded number value that says: 'this ship currently has X gallons of water in its bilge.' But yes, less information (data)....move 'visual inference'.
  19. I think a little unpredictability is a good thing, especially when it comes to impromtu engagements. POTBS gave too much information with a simple mouse-over. You knew the hull, structure, sail integrity right off the bat. You essentially knew how a player had their ship rigged, and whether or not you were sufficiently fitted to counter a ship's strength, or expose its weakness. I think it facilitated a lot of pre-determined engagements and that inhibited PvP in the long run. Players and groups spent more time looking for that 'perfect matchup' than actually engaging in combat. Subtle hints such as how the ship sits on the water line could give you clues as to how heavily it's laden. Is it listing? Has it possibly taken on water? Is it damaged? All of this information should reveal itself in layers as a player gets closer to the ship. Different configurations on the same class of ship can certainly make engagements more unpredictable and dynamic. I am 100% in favor of this.

    POTBS

To quote Hovis: This post wins the internet. Imperial Shipyards have landed on the Naval Action forums, and we're getting the band back together. If the admins can kindly point out how we can help spread the word about this game, don't hesitate to reply. We want this game to have a rockin' community! I've put out word to as many ex-POTBS players as I could, and to a man they are all incredibly excited about this game. Take our monies now, please.
