Make anyone be able to join a battle and make people have to keep track of their allies and friends for themselves. That would be the the simple solution. But the problem might be people who join a fight and steal prizes. I'm pretty sure that would become a problem. This is not without issues...

Personally after having seen some of RAMJB:s videos on youtube I'd like to say that firstly I'd like to see my name of my ship in the menu so you can easily identify your ship when selling, refitting and repairing similar ships in the menu.
There are a lot of names out there that would be acceptable even if they have no historic association, Moderation might prove difficult unless it should focus on only moderating the obvious policy violations.
Should the developers go with a moderation solution then consider having moderators and a control of individual ships names controlled fraction vise since some names like mythological names and such might be appropriate and in service in several factions simultaneously. First come first served should only apply fraction vise IMHO.

Showing the names of unknown ships could be skill based. If you have a good crew skill, that might help you gain more information earlier on an unknown/opposing ship. But at the most it is my opinion it should never show more than ships name and class. If your skill is low you'd only be able to see the ships class. Identifying the name of the ship might only be possible for lower skilled crews from the back where the name clearly shows. Also if you've encountered the ship before you would be able to identify it earlier since recognition would probably have been a part of identifying ships back in the day.
