With the upcoming release i think its time to clean up and maybe reorganise the Forum a little bit. At the moment we have the Guilds, Clans and Trading companies forum which includes a subforum for the Carribean Server Guild Recruitment which i find very confusing and new players that want to have a look which clans are recruiting might miss the subforum alltogether. Also tons of 4 year old posts with no relevance might be a good time to clean it up/archive the old stuff. - C.v.L.

Personally, I’m excited about starting fresh. Crossing my fingers though they keep the date of Jun 10-14 and not push it back.

Good to see you again, Taranis. I was thinking a bit more on this and I can see resets in the future when in the PvP world conquests gets lopsided (as it has in the past) but as a full wipe I believe that can be a major error if they go down that path. so I do not see that as fix all/end all operation. Schedule resets would be acceptable as to be allowed time to gather supplies and ships, return to capitals and prepare for another rage on the Caribbean. We learned a long time ago that no matter what we think about the survival of the game or player base to keep the game going, the Dev's did as they wished. It's as if they have all the resources and finances to build a game they want even if it is build for the Dev's own pleasure and we are here to make it interesting for their world. Remember there have been time where PvP had 900 on line at a time, then changes we made and a bunch left. Some came back and some more left, again and again. Although the more interesting part is PvE has been pretty steady all along number wise. This game is like none other and I believe the developers are keeping it that was. This explains why hardcore games are frustrated with the mechanics because it doesn't make sense to them from a gaming POV. So if you had all the money you ever needed and wanted to play a game like this one and there wasn't anything like it on the market, so you create a group of talented people , give yourself a name , and Alpha your desire to be tested - then you have what we got right now. IMHO

I just hope they really do this on the 10th to 12th like they say. There were only 150 players on today during the middle of a Saturday. To me that means people are playing not for fun, but for rewards they can keep. All the more proof that a wipe is really gonna hurt.

Naval Action combat is dynamic. There's no fixed solutions. Each Captain has its own style and Exam can be passed in several ways. A sample of 5 veterans groups shown that Final Exam was passed using 5 different methods. By shooting hull and sinking both ships, by boarding both ships, by capturing NPC and sinking the second, another using demasting to cripple and then sink both ships. Everything works. What works for one Captain might not be the best for another. Plus wind, waves, positioning, flow of battle, is different everytime we try. Improvise, adapt and overcome The following videos just give a brief overview how the exams can be completed successfully.

Likewise from Trinidad, we can hit Remedios (44k), Islamorada (145k), and Morgans Bluff (173k) despite Nuevitas (117k) being far closer than the last 2 (Blue = Missions available, Black = Unconquerable by either owning or capital, Red = capture county capital with no mission) Not knowing how the mechanic works really makes it difficult to know if your ports can be attacked or not, as clearly it isn't just the closest.
  16. 1 point
So as far as i understood the system should work like this: the 3 closest county capitals can be flipped (if they are hostile) however that doesnt seem to be the case as for instance: from Tumbado you can flip: - Sisal - Pinar - Santa Fe (although Salamanca is in fact closer - see on the picture below) If you calculate distances (with the coordinates) they come out like this. The numbers in () are the distances from ingame trader tool: Pinar: 131k (128k) Sisal: 160k (156k) Salamanca: 183k (178k) Santa Fe: 206k (201k) Please elaborate on why it's Santa Fe instead of Salamanca. Is my understanding of the supposed working of the mechanic wrong (i.e. it is not based on actual distance but some other criteria) or your coding?
  17. 1 point
Lo siento de veras. Igual sí que es necesario tomar distancia ... Saludos y suerte.

I do not want to be too pessimistic, but the general feeling among the veterans i know is that this game - after a couple of months from the launch - will end up as it was during the last part of the testing. - war server: a small club of the same persons playing the "hardcore elite" part and 90% of newbies leaving after a couple of months. - peace server: maybe new players will like it, but actually the content is a little lacking: trade is almost useless, killing NPCs has inconsistent rewards, missions give rewards that are useful for crafting, but crafting - after the insane revamp of building prices - has been set behind a huge grind wall (and with the new elite NPCs, is also quite pointless crafting ships that are weaker, in stats, with respect to the captured ones). Will this be enough to keep up servers? Maybe, but only if the hardcore elite small crew is disposed to buy new DLCs: That's the only possible business model of this game after launch (and the bet of the developers). Otherwise I fear the game will slowly fade.

Not answering a straight, repeatedly asked question in dev's forum, could be an answer as well... (...and, what ever an answer would be, I'll never ever trust a given promise by dev's again.)
  25. 1 point
I had to take a break from the game for about 6-8 months. Coming back, i see many changes that i like. That said, it sucks that the devs go back on their words. I chalk it up to exuberance on their part, wanting to do more and communicating their hopes too soon. I think the reasoning is flawed as well, in that players taking up the game 1 moth from now, will have a disadvantage to those that started this coming week. In fact, those that started this coming week, will be at disadvantage to those of us that are versed in the exams. But if we want to pretend - let's pretend and get to over with, shall we? That said, the question as to whether this is the final wipe is quite valid imho....

Indeed.. I discovered it while doing some genealogy research on my fathers side.. I found newspaper articles (long articles to boot) mentioning "ZZZZZZ Reunion" year after year "ZZZZZZ" was my grandmother's maiden name. I kept wondering why the reunion was worth mentioning year after year in the newspaper. I finally found an article that referenced the civil war veteran; it was never a topic of conversation when I was growing up.. but the Spanish American War, WWI and WWII had all occurred in between, by the time I might have been interested as a youngster the Civil War was a footnote (Especially because WWI and II were recent memory to family members).

Well, I see the game is finally up for release. Fittingly after spending a whole evening getting back into it haha. Oh well, good practice. Returning player from 2016 looking for a organized and reasonably active clan. Started in USS and then went on to form Disorderly Conduct with some of the guys from USS, then KF. Plan on crafting ships and blowing up things with friends now that there won't be another wipe! From my research it seems as though Havok may be a good fit! I'd like to join if you'll have me, thanks.

I'm glad that NA is finally being officially released. In a lot of ways the population has suffered a bit of EA fatigue which is why threads like this have posts all over the map. That's expected. I will probably be trying it out after release for a little bit as I am a fan of the type of warfare that NA has and its by far the best Age of Sail wargame out there. However, I've got a bit of a tempered expectation and I'm not expecting to get wrapped back into it for longer than a month or two. The reasons is that after 3+yrs not much has really changed and some of that stems from a bit of a chaotic path in EA. Yes, ship stats, some econ stuff, new ship models, and the tutorial is all fine and good, however, why I stopped playing was problems a little bit deeper and ongoing over that 3yr+ timeframe. RvR: Lets face it, its still PotBS and it really limits new players, player styles, and ship diversity just as it did in PotBS. I messed around with Elite Dangerous and its faction vs faction play and thought "wow, this would have been awesome for Naval Action and really not that hard to implement". Each location is flipped by setting up in three periods with each period being a week of preparation, conflict, and control. Its not a 2 hr slot, winner take all battle but a longer struggle allowing for multiple playstyles to get involved. Dynamic open Sea engagements, smuggling/econ warfare, mission running and even keeping port battles could all be taken into consideration. This is the core issue with NA. It lacks tiered gameplay experiences. Don't take this as a complete fail of a game and I still stand by my old favorable review of the game. The combat is great, the addition of forts was great, and there has been meaningful changes for good. However, reason it struggles is that it fails to engage multiple types of gamers into the "something greater" aspect of the open sea. A newbie in a pickle has no measurable use in world much less in RvR. A casual player with a job, wife, kids can't always spend hours at a time doing a port battle. The need to grind away at earning money to achieve the material means to reach a meta ship, skill book, fighting style and find a large enough group to achieve meaningful change is a pretty narrow gameplay experience to have (and its a bit boring) and it doesn't include actual captain skill which is a huge component to the game. Endgame is full fleets of X meta ship in port battles and that in of itself favors the higher population faction and/or most dedicated group of ~24 and leaves out everyone else. Are there exceptions to this experience? Sure, but its not enough to keep people of different playstyles engaged for long. So, I expect that after a little bit of time after release I'll get bored as I've already done the ~24 people dot flip and found it got stale after a while and then find there really isn't a lot else to do. Still, I'm happy to say that I've gotten my money's worth and that I've had some very good experiences. I'm happy to try again.

On PVE server, super powerful ships cannot be used against other players. On PVP server, this is a critical inbalance. That's the issue here. @Cetric was specifically referring to a PvP situation in his post. Don't get me wrong. This is not an anti PVE server rant. I'd love to see PVE server having the same opportunities as PVP server. But you can't kill players with inbalanced ships on PVE, so it's less critical there.

When two captains are of relatively equal skill, it is most definitely the quality of the ship that is decisive. A small advantage in equipment is a good thing but with the bonus and mod system we have now, the difference is huge. .50 cal Barrett against a .22 cal rimshot. Sure, the snipers are equally skilled....

why not make a tutorial with all this info that only 1% knows?
  35. 1 point
The problem itself has its root not in the vets vs newbies problem. It would be very strange if a vet player with 1000+ hours would not have any advantage over a newbie. The problem are powerships with 4 bonuses and godlike upgrades that a normal player could not achieve. These ships give the vets even more power and the result is pure frustration because you simply can't win against these ships. Many videos and my own experience prove this. So you feel betrayed by the game, betrayed by the mechanics. It's like you give exactly one single player in cs go an AK with double fire rate, double precision and double damage. Then wonder why this player will be global elite in 5 weeks?
  36. 1 point
You know mate: a properly handled Requin/Niagara can kill almost anything up to 2nd rates (granted a relevant skill gap: no skill gap - no way a smaller ship could kill a bigger one. Period) even in different ways. The problem is not small ships per se, but that they require in the end more skill (fast thinking and acting) and experience (real NA "skill") than bigger ones. And NO WAY a new player can hope to use a ligher ship vs a bigger one handled by someone with some experience. The problem in the end is the steep learning curve of the game. That's a good part too. Still it'll end being a terrible barrier for newcomers (as it has been always). Only solution IMHO is making gear bonuses smaller (so less gap between rich/vet poor/casuals) and reduced repairs (to make 1v3+ battles not difficult but simply deadly - as they should be).

Is there any plan to fix the aiming of Pandora if using someting else than the main deck only. For the moment, this ship can aim properly a broadside only if all decks but the main one is left with no gun. Equiping them and putting them off service by F1 & F2 does not solve the aiming concern: for shooting the enemy side, you need to aim in water. Only present solution: equip only the 22 main guns, plus bow and stern. Leave the rest empty. Question: Why are the swivels and secondary decks impacting the main deck aiming?

I would like to be able to set the sell price of ships with Reals, Doubloons, and CM simultaneously.
  39. 1 point
in absence of a decent argument by devs of why suddenly the 'tranquility' of our server had to be disturbed by killing our ships, I have to suspect into the same direction. Envy of the PvP toxic faction towards us. So the "now carebears lose their ships, hehehe" satisfaction serves as compromise to us still keeping rank, knowledge, opened slots. But what a disappointment in our developers!
  40. 1 point
that's literally the example that we don't want. If you have friends on the other side and you don't help kill them with you're "green side" then why should the Brits not want to shoot you off their team? Then they get punished for it because you can abuse the join battle system and they can't? Come on Willis - lets not make it seem fair to the 2 nations that get tossed around because of it. Any other group doing this is not only tribunal worthy, it's a shitty thing to do. You can enter 1 side with a 1st rate, bugger up the BR levels specifically so your friends can join the other side and you then reap the rewards of killing both sides? that's utter nonsense.
  41. 1 point
remove them from RvR, turn Mort into a Neutral port for all to use that zone. Make a lot of extra shallow ports called Pirate havens bases for pirates. Let them be an impossible nation if they do do RvR and only can work out of free towns and pirate havens (all havens are shallow ports). Keep pirate mechanic where they can join either side and bring back FFA. There we have a pirate mechanic that is within reason and for them to simply code.
  42. 1 point
Sure, give us raids, that's not a new request. But attack lines should be determined by voronoi distances between ports. Any port should be able to attack any neighboring port as determined by a simple half distance algorithm. Not something as ridiculously arbitrary as a hard coded number.

Some of these would actually make better loadscreens than the darker theme that we currently have. I really like those, lighter and cleaner, idk. I also dislike the currently map that we have and I would definetly appreaciate a more accurate colored one, instead of being green and blue for water, I think there is one thrown around in the forums that would've been perfect.
