  1. this was the Bounty replica sunk during Hurricane Sandy in October 2012. HMS Bounty, also known as HM Armed Vessel Bounty, was a small merchant vessel purchased by the Royal Navy for a botanical mission. The ship, under the command of William Bligh, was sent to the Pacific Ocean to acquire breadfruit plants and transport them to British possessions in the West Indies. That mission was never completed, due to a mutiny led by the acting Master, Fletcher Christian. This was the famous Mutiny on the Bounty. Bounty was originally known as collier Bethia, built in 1784 at the Blaydes shi

  5. A free exchange of ideas is essential in development of the game and community. Here is the simple guide that will help you understand what this forum is and what this forum is not This is a Game - Labs, Inc development forum and our goal is to limit unnecessary friction, which will only delay the development. As a result discussions that do not help to make the game better or make community worse (for example lack of respect to other members) will be removed and members who do not make this community a nice friendly place will be removed. 6. Hey all, I am currently working alot with UI/UX and jumping at any chance to mess around with it in real scenarios. I threw together some ideas for UI and figured I'd share them incase anything is worth consideration Active UI UPDATED 3.12.15 Inactive UI UPDATED 3.12.15 Damage Direction Indicator ^^^ Damage Direction Indicator, Many games have this now. Seems relevant as im sure a broadside would do something to your captain even if its just a little annoyance in your eyes. Im testing with maybe splintering wood instead of just a red gradiant. The title is self explainatory Would be nice to have a forum section specifically dedicated to changelog listing minor and major updates and the time it was put in place Allows players to easily see whats new when they see their Steam client updating Naval Action. Now as it stands,to find the changelog would be in general discussions (if im not wrong).Abit troublesome to find older changelog updates Place it in the announcements section and lock the topic (only mods and admins can update it) so that theres no unneccessary replies and everyone can easily access it For feedback though on th

  10. Beagle was a Cherokee-class brig, built as a warship by the Royal Navy. As such, she would have been designed to be weatherly and capacious for long-distance ocean passages. That means that her draft is likely much greater, relatively speaking, than a Great Lakes vessel like Niagara. Of course, the Cherokee-class was saddled with the moniker 'coffin brigs' because a fourth of them were lost at sea. They were at the low end of what is survivable on open water, with low freeboard and a tendency to flood their decks.

  11. Yes I agree the zoom aspect is also all wrong. I withdraw my suggestion of zooming. However the view should be inverted to be correct. I think viewers will at first be confused and then learn just how difficult it was to use an 18thcentury telescope. They will get used to it.

  13. I like a lot of the ideas above, but I have a Radical idea, and shot me down in flames. I alway find it better to start from the ground up. Why not just get rid of the UI other than chat. So for example: - call up the compass ala the telescope - judge enemy's from the colours they fly - Judge the condition of the ships from damage and list etc, - listen to the bosom calls for reload or go into gunner mode. Granted, This would however make the game pretty unforgiving.

  14. I had quite a chuckle at this actually, funniest thing I've seen all day. Much assumptions such wow? Anyway, no I am not saying I am unable to control myself although I can see where my comments may have been misconstrued. No, what I am saying is that being in a semi-toxic community like EvE and having been assimilated into that means that I and many other people coming from semi- or even completely toxic communties are going to have to watch their step very carefully if the devs plan really is 100% sterility in the community. Which would take away the fun, and move the focus away from the gam

  16. So effectively, you're saying you are completely unable to control yourself to avoid using vulgar language directed at others? I don't know of many professional workplaces that tolerate people being abusive to one another, most people certainly don't walk down the street cursing loudly at other passersby, and you're generally carded and subsequently asked to leave the game in the recreational soccer league I plan in if you're abusive towards the other players. Yet somehow, we think that just because we're online, we can treat other people poorly and disrespectfully? Personally, I find it ba

The following 3D model of the Gunboat Philadelphia can be viewed here http://3d.si.edu/explorer?modelid=47 at the new Smithsonian X3D website http://3d.si.edu/browser You may have to update your browser (Internet Explorer 6 won't cut it... ) and perhaps download a browser plugin to be able to view, manipulate, zoom in, change lighting, etc. but it is worthwhile to poke around this boat and some of the other Smithsonian virtual "charter collections" being made available. They are all composed of real museum objects laser scanned, some textured. Updates and improvements happen sporadical

  18. Does this positive side mean that only people who 100% agree with your cleansing of the internet can post, and that the people who are at 95% or below aren't allowed to comment? In any case I'd like to express concerns over this, I mean we could do all we like, and I love the idea of not having a WoT community, but as a person who plays EVE of all games I'd have to watch my steps very carefully if we are going for 100% sterile. I don't want to have to worry about that every time I log on, it'll end up being: (Me) "Why the f*** did you friendly fire??" (Other Person) "OMG he swore D:" Other per

  20. I've never seen a report on Connie's speed that comes from a cited source. The figure of 13 knots is scattered around the internet, which is a sort of speed ceiling that many fast frigates reach but few exceed (by much). The equal of Leda-class or slightly behind. Making the best ships premium is the very definition of Pay to Win and may result in howls of outrage. I'm just really concerned that building everything possible on the extreme end of the time scale is going to make me a patsy for sailing anything older. Leander runs down and massacres the 3rd Rate Ingermanland, for instance. If i

  21. I don't know. I like the minimalist ui. We don't need ornaments on the ai, they just cover up the view of the landscape and ships, and I'd rather look at what game labs has created in the world instead of a fancy ui.

  22. Cost and maintenance will never, ever work as an offset. It's impossible to imagine any frigate more than 50% costlier to build and operate than your average 44. (Live oak aside.) Any realistic price increase will only ever be a drop in the bucket for power-gaming players. If it's a decent sailer with superior firepower, players will pay any price, and the ocean will be clogged with super frigates. The only way you could have a hope of using cost to balance the ship 'ecosystem' is with exaggerated, exorbitant penalties. Eg, Naval Action's spar-decked frigates are ballasted with emeralds an

  23. Yeh, I'm not so into the gold leaf/aged look personally, it feels gaudy and it's a totally over done cliché. Also, anything too elaborate on a UI detracts from the content behind it. Minimalist with maybe a more dated font and organic lines perhaps but don't get too carried away. The purpose of an interface is not to stand out if anything.

  24. This design is too modern. It feels like I am in a modern naval game. The concept looks good and I like it, but doesn't represent the age of sail at all. Can you try to add ornaments around buttons? Just my review. example:

  26. I can make a good 3D model of a ship for this game. I don't even particularly care if I get paid a lot or not. However, I won't actually start making a 3D model of a ship unless there is an agreement and plan for the 3D model of my ship to actually be used. It is a lot of work to make one of these ships. So far I have heard nothing but rumors that making a 3D model is possible, and that sooner or later there will be an announcement about how 3rd party 3D art guys like me can go about making a ship for the game. Yet, nothing has been said. I'm still not making any 3D models.

  28. This would be great. This is a bit away from gameplay wish but I would like to see a lot of wildlife! -Pods of whales and dolphins...schools of fish. Maybe being able to catch fish? -Sharks... If only to see some shape moving under the ship. -Seals on shore or swimming around -Flocks of birds flying about or the lone albatross. I not suggesting sea monsters ( even though things like that were believed in) just some ambiance. None of this needs to be interactive but it would make things feel alive. I know some will say that time is better spent making the game "play" better and I can u

  29. Mast repairs should DEFINITELY be separate. But also much slower. Much, much slower. That way, taking down a mast gives you a fleeting tactical advantage that only affects part of a battle. You must seize your opportunitu or lose it. That is good fair gameplay. Ships should carry many replacements for topgallant masts, one of each topmast and no lower masts. But lower masts should be pretty much invulnerable until sails and hull lose around 30% HP. This is realism-inspired balance. Personally I think dismasting is the most exciting thing that can happen in this game. And at the end of the

  30. 2 heavy broadsides demasting a brig is very realistic. On all paintings ships after battle are mostly demasted but we know it's game changing and boring. Realism does not equal gameplay. One solution is to separate mast repairs from hull - making it a skill on a cool down. It is not magic because ships carried extra mast parts and canvas and could use existing broken parts for repairs. Another one is to give 4 repairs.
