maturin
That's an extremely short service life for a First Rate. I wonder if they used unseasoned timber or softwood.
SteelSandwich
My thoughts exactly. That's why i was hoping someone else had additional information about this ship and her rapid decline.
Haratik
So far all I've been able to find is that her timbers came from Courland (Kurlandia), and the Kazan Province (Tatarstan). Also this excerpt: "As was customary with all European First Rates during the early years of the eighteenth century, she was primarily a prestige ship and saw limited active service."Link The only theory I could put forward is that the cost of maintaining her could be better spent funding other endeavours, however, I have a feeling said theory would be shot down, as she was in service during the reign of Catherine the Great. maturin
Courland is in Latvia, which AFAIK means a lot of the same scots pine that the British used in shipbuilding.
Mirones
maybe the russian forum could help us with her?
Souvenir
The first time I hear about this ship. In Russian history, it was the ships, whose battle your way was much more. Some ships have been copied from the british Victoria.
