June 22nd, The Foggy Dance at Bone Cay

Preliminaries

Calls went out in the early dawn for as many captains as possible to muster for an attack on Bone Cay. The Pirates, however, could not get more than 6 captains willing to undertake the long journey, which would surely end in death.

From the west 4 ships would be coming, 2 Mortar Brigs and 2 Mercuries. One Trincomalee and one Navy Brig would sail in from the east.

North East Deflection

As the Trincomalee came into the deep channel between Bone Cay and Pedro Cay, three British Mercuries made their crossing over. But with the Pirate Navy Brig breaking off, a fourth Mercury was intercepted.

South West "Assault"

With orders to escort the two assault ships in, the Trincomalee made its way around the island to the south. And as the Pirate Mercuries came into view, two British scouts were spotted. The British Mercury and Rattle Snake tried to close in on the Pirate Mercuries before they could link up with their Trincomalee. But alas too late as the three ships came together.

Cursing the map maker for not marking the shallows correctly, the Pirate Trincomalee was pushed to the south with the Mercuries in tow.

As the Pirates came around the shallows to the south end of Bone Cay a sudden storm kicked in. With visibility reduced to a minimum, one Mercury was send to the harbor to scout, while the Pirate commander tried to get past an opposing Mercury.

While the scouting Mercury reported at least 11 British ships sitting close to the harbor, the British Mercury came in and out view. Each time sailing back to the Trincomalee, the British Mercury did not dare to venture too far as he could not see what lay beyond the Trincomalee.

Finally the three Pirate ships managed to reform deep in the mist and lowered their whaleboats for the harbor assault. And moments later the alarm bells sounded from Bone Cay, "Pirate fleet incoming!".

Not wasting time and with nothing to see through the mist, the British ships raced to the harbor to form their blockade. With a total of 18 6ths forming the blockade the British stared into the mist.

British Discipline Held Fast

Without any chance of winning the Pirates turned to the stragglers and late comers. The Mercuries dove onto a lone Mercury which was sitting as a forward scout just before the harbor blockade. The Trincomalee sailed north, intercepting another Mercury, which was trying to skip the shallows.
The two Mortar Brigs stood down from battle stations as they saw no chance to get into the harbor or ongoing battles.

From afar came the cries and reports, "Pirate ships are engaging me!", "Need assistance!". However, the British, disciplined as ever, held their line awaiting the assault of the unknown Pirate fleet.

Looking at the prized Mercury, one Pirate captain said to sail the ship right away. "It's an exceptional build, look at its beauty." Rather he should have looked at the damage instead.

And thus the two Mercuries hooked up with the Navy Brig sailing around the north end of Bone Cay to fall upon another British Mercury. A second ship of exceptional beauty was taken from British hands.

The Pirates sailed away with their prizes, leaving the British in puzzled amazement what just had happened.

Result

With no losses on the Pirate side and at least two Mercuries of exceptional quality captured, the battle is a clear victory for the Pirates.

Notes

The British captains present still got their rewards from Admiralty for their "stout" defense under "hard" circumstances.

"... a clear victory for the Pirates."? As I see was an assault to Bone Cay without sucess, you just compensated the loss of gold on that flag by capturing 2 mercs. You just saw that british forces won't give you those islands so easly. We waited inside PB for the pirates, but they were outside so scared. Our time wasted was well compensated in the end of PB with nice mods and notes.

From what i could see :

Saw one navybrig scout coming to Bone that was pulled up into the battle first + heard about a trincomalee that was reported scouting around.

Some minutes waiting and later i saw and reported you with the flag in a mercury + a mortar brig and another mercury, the trincomalee that was reported in the area showed up after a bit.

You guys stayed far away outside the shallow waters sailing parallel maybe expecting us to come and tag while you had the support of the trincomalee, looking hesitant to approach closer to the island and enter in the shallow waters, you then sailed back to the opposite direction and saw we were not coming, then you came closer to the island, consensus was to let you come in closer and stay out of range from the bait trincomalee. We did not knew if there was more pirates coming behind or if those 4 ships were your entire fleet.

You then all four dropped sails while we were waiting and suddenly the flag was planted ... Love how this works , this is pirates position from the island when the flag was planted, you had sails down and did not moved from there when i started to record just after the message announcing the flag planted poped out  :

Also funny to notice the trincomalee position in the middle of the 4 pirate ships that came and especially his position relative to you highlighted on the right, by definition he's out of the shallow waters surrounding the island ...

And this is the shallows area around Bone Cay :

.. .Probably he could have carried and planted the flag himself without entering shallows , or maybe next time a Santissima could do it  :P

I did not participated much or in many PB's but this kind of flag planting is absurd for me, saw this with Santanillas against Spanish some weeks ago where they planted the flag from the other side of the island ... I love how this works ..

No need to say that some wtf's came up when the message appeared for flag planted while we were waiting for the rest of the potential pirate fleet, and not wanting to get tagged into a battle by the trincomalee as those PB's with towers captures can end up in a blink ...

Result we had to wait in that battle in case some pirates came, they never did and you never did too, even for the giggles while outnumbered, from my point of view : loss of everybody's time even if i got a HGN and a fine quality upgrade at the end ... This said we should have put you into a battle before probably and avoid all this   :P

We brought the Trincomalee especially to keep pesky Mercuries at bay. :) But we met a couple of issues.

The map is inaccurate, the Trincomalee had to circumvent the shallows perfectly. While I myself could not go to far out of range to ensure you would not try to take me down. I think the map inaccuracy isn't a game breaker, it actually makes a bit of sense.

Fog isn't properly synced across clients. I myself and the GreenT in the other Mercury were in deep fog until after we had planted. The others just had bad weather as yourself. I consider this to be a bug, everybody should have the same weather.

We kept moving around the shallows until we found the magic spot, where I could plant and was still within the tagging circle of the Trincomalee. :P

It's another wonky mechanic, that is hopefully going to be replaced with http://forum.game-labs.net/index.php?/topic/14642-port-battles-assault-flag-rework-proposals-moderated/

In my mind it should be some point where you drop your whaleboats to supply an assault. (Similar to the landing ships in Battlestation Pacific.) In which case it wouldn't be all that bad if a Santisma can do that. I'll add my thoughts to that topic.

Still you could end up in an empty port battle, but then the price paid to open it would be much higher. The current 150K for laugh and giggles was perfect.

Didn't my announcement over global chat give away this would be for laugh and giggles? :P

So are you cowards coming west or should we continue to harass Jamaica and surroundings? :D

I had the rain + fog just before, but already noticed the weather sync problem once, i had an heavy storm and not able to see 200m away when a guy had a clear view, not sure what is causing this.

The map inaccurate is a good thing, reflects the time era maps and i prefer this to a 100% accurate map for immersion purpose.

The flag planting miles away is silly from my point of view, hopefully this will change when new PB mechanics will come.

Like i said i did not participated much in PB's, i am a solo guy and when it is possible i participate in actions, ( even if now i created a one man clan to profit of the clan warehouse unlimited storage, technically i am in a clan, but i am alone still :P ) , sadly most of the good stuff happens at night when it's dinner time for me.

I did not saw the hint in global chat, i logged in game and conquest message poped out, had to move out and tp some ships to get my mercury there the faster i could while keeping eyes on the National chat for infos, i was a bit busy to look the global one

When it comes to this : " So are you cowards coming west or should we continue to harass Jamaica and surroundings? "

I'm sorry man but with all the respect what kind of action were you expecting to get in Bone cay while coming with a so small attack fleet ? A quick capture of a few towers and the mortar taking care of a couple of others for a 10mn empty PB ? Plus there was barely 250 players online when i was moving my ships around before the battle ...

I'm not part of teams plans or know what they plan to do so i don't know if some stuff will happen, would not tell if i knew anyways, i think most players right now are bored of the PB's that in the past were more like a full time job, take one port  only to defend it the next day and repeat day after day ... Now most of the PB's i see when i am logged in are port swapping between friendly nations or attack in undefended enemies ports and such , i think we all wait for the patches to come to bring a bit more life to the game and some new stuff.

Well, if you guys had not turned black you could have a lot more activity right now against Spanish, Danes, Pirates etc, i just hope they implement soon a way for pirates to return to a Nation without loosing stuff like the BP's learned and see you again under the Brit flag to help in some conquests like i done a few times in the past answering to Ausez calls for pubbies help in the National chat, that will for sure be more entertaining than what we get now   :P

I don't have a screenshot of it, but I think I said: "All ships, all nations, please undock from your respective ports and lets get ganking south of Jamaica!" :)

I thought that was enough of a hint, that things would be fishy. :P

I do hope they keep the front line open at 10-12 and not fall for SLRN trickery allowing the whole west side falling back into slumbering EU times. But then again, we will gladly accept more brethren into the Pirates once that time comes. :P

The British have been putting all timers in Panama outside of 10-12, while I'm trying to get everybody to put up 10-12 timers. We captured Sandy Bay back, but the diplos want it on I think 4-6. Urgh...

I think we need a bit more drastic measures and create a 10-12 zone say from Great Corn to Canalete. Or maybe just Great Corn to Concepcion. But alas that has to go through the diplos to get into an agreement.

The alternative is bring Pirates down on 10-12 timers and Spanish on 20-22. Alternate ports and voila we can have a 10-12 & 20-22 war zone.

So right now the only thing is Bone Cay or Honduras.

I don't care too much for PBs myself as well. If they are roughly equal, then yes we should dive in. If they are not, be creative. Do whatever it takes to turn it into a victory for yourself. :D

The problem is timezones. I try my best to liven up the 10-12 in any way I can and bring as many folks into battles (not necessarily port-battles).

Sometimes it succeeds, but most times it does not. We see some small battle somewhere or just an empty port-battle.

The instant teleport has solved already been a blessing in that regard, because now it is much easier to bring players together. Maybe we just need more outposts? Or maybe once we have rid teleports (but added AI) we should all have the freeports for free outposts. It needs more thinking...
