Abuse of flag mechanics to block assault on port

Recommended Posts

I've begun issuing warnings for off topic posts in this thread.  Stick to the main topic - is creating an alt to pull a flag and block a port battle ok?  If not, what should be the punishment?  And what, if any, mechanics might help to stop this from happening again.

Port Battle timers are off topic.

Who it might have been is off topic.

Who did or did not succeed at various attacks is off topic.

Stick to the topic.

The Moderation team is currently discussing this issue with Admin, please be patient for a response as they're busting their buns to get this week's scheduled patch out.

1) is creating an alt to pull a flag and block a port battle ok?

NO it is not ok

2) what should be the punishment?

giving immediately the port to the offended party without the need of a battle

3) And what, if any, mechanics might help to stop this from happening again.

set a minimum level (let's say the rank that gives access to a trinco, consti or 3rd rates) for buying a flag.

giving the port away is not a solution, I think giving a ban, whether that is a week ban or perm ban it does not matter, as long as it does not happen again.

Make it so that only a certain rank can buy that flag, depending on if it's a deep water or shallow water.

If someone troll buys the flag people report it and put on forums with evidence and the punishment is a ban of some time and the devs track the IP and if he does it again with a different account perm ban him.

I don't personally like the fact that you can block a port capture buying a flag like that, but IMHO that is not the worst problem right now. It could be fixed limiting the minimum rank that can buy flags.

This is a beta, these things are useful for the devs to improve the mechanics if they manage to learn from them.

Using certain rank for the flag can't solve the issue. May I can wait for a while like english and gain XP to purchase the flag but I'm a real Dutch, pirate, french, spain etc.

This kind of operations was used in the "cold war" known as "false flag operation". Now we know the cheat but not the REAL cheater.

1) is creating an alt to pull a flag and block a port battle ok?

No, it's cheating, entirely against the spirit of fair play and fun.

2) what should be the punishment?

The standard punishment for cheaters/exploiters, given to any and all guilty parties.

3) And what, if any, mechanics might help to stop this from happening again.

Remove the need for the flag to be physically delivered, but introduced a variable timer between the flag purchase and the battle starting, based on the distance from the port the flag was purchased at.

Sadly, that'd only delay, not fix, the problem; all it would take is one person to make an alt, grind away for a week or so, and they'll have the level required. Also, they'd more easily evade suspicion than a brand new account would.

That's ridiculous, flag interception is and should be a valid tactic. Period.

The solution is pretty much either raise the minimum rank to buy flags for deep water ports at the very least to the rank necessary to fully operate a Cerberus, or a more blanketed solution would be to do something with naval bases allowing only clan leaders to build them, and use them to buy/issue flags for conquest for themselves or other players by giving other players permissions to purchase flags from said base.

I've seen some variation of both of these suggestions for situations like this, and I think they're the most reasonable to counter port blocking style behavior.

A nice solution would be to let people vote on flag purchase. Only players in geographical proximity of the target port get to vote. A vote succeeds if after 30 sec more people voted yes than no or as soon as 10 people voted yes.

This will also bring the need for at least 1 player of the attacking nation to be in proximity of target port, making buying 10 simultaneous flags much harder to coordinate yet still possible.

Solution might be :

Flag can be bought but you have 5 minutes to get it in transit to the port being targeted if you sit in port with it,  it expires.

Has to hit OW in a set time frame or it expires.

Wipe xp and all assets for the exploiters
