It is during those years that our navy grew capable to defy foreign influences. Who doesn't remember the great battle fought of the coast of Gibraltar, where our leader Jacob van Heemskerk crushed a Spanish squadron in 1607? Or one of the greatest achievements of Piet hein, a Luitenant-Generaal in the Staatse Vloot. He managed to capture part of the Spanish Treasure fleet 1628. That struggle came to an end, after 80 years of hard fighting. With the end of spanish influences, other powers laid their eyes of the dutch wealth and success. Across the channel an island nation lay in wait, filled with jealousy in it's eye. After an initial struggle where our fleet was outclassed and outmatched, we promised ourself: 'Next time we will be prepared!' A building program was started to balance the odds, which were swaying in our disadvantage. Many a glorious ship was build, not least of which is the '7 Provincien': She was the first purpose build warship of the dutch navy. Many of her predecessors were armed, yet build for trade or escort duty. With her 80 bronze cannons, her incredible detail and the hope of a nation, she sailed into battle. The battle was long and hard, lasting for 4 days. The battle that took place would go on record as one of the largest ever fought. Skill and determination prevailed, destroying more than a quarter of the British fleet. She was one of the ships that participated in the glorious assault on the Medway. A raid in which the British fleet was crippled and humiliated. Not only marked till this very day as one of the worst British defeats in naval history, we also took the Royal charles(flagship) as a prize. Many fights followed, which lead to a English-French blockade of the Republic. In the Battle of Solebay we bravely fought their fleet. Although heavilty outnumber and outgunned (75 ships, 20.500 men, 4480 cannons V 95 ships, 34.500 men, 6000 cannons), it was the first of several fight to break blockade. The 7 Provincien is shown fighting on the left side. Soon after, the Battle of Schooneveld started. Although again outnumbered (64 ships, 14500 men, 3200 cannons V 86 ships, 24000 men, 4800 cannons), we endured. The aftermath being an end to the blockade of the republic. And the end of the major engagements happened with the battle of Texel (slag by Kijkduin). Again, we were outnumbered, yet pounded the British fleet into submission. We have a history of naval warfare. As Jan Pieterszoon Coen put it into words: ''Daarom is het niet mogelijk de handel zonder de oorlog, noch de oorlog zonder de handel vol te houden en voort te zetten,'' (It is impossible maintaining trade without war, nor is waging war without maintaining trade possible.) During the prelude of the Battle of the downs, he enganged a massively superior spanish fleet, outnumbering him 4:1 (64v17). Due to superior tactics he forces the Spanish to retreat in a nearby harbor. Whilst his reinforcements were flocking into the lines, the spanish attempted a sally. In that attempt, the dutch fleet (which now had equal numbers) crushed the armada. It is estimated that 40 Spanish ship either sunk/captured/surrendered, opposed to 1 dutch vessel being heavily damaged. I may not know how to sail, or fight, or trade, and do not know east from west. But I will ask questions, loads of questions. And this is more valuable than anything else.
