Kudos to Flavalicious for his English "Newbie Tutorial", which I have used as a base for this Pirate version. Original here! -->

New Pirate Player Tutorial/Guide!

Avast ye scurvy dogs! So ye've decided to sail under the black flag as a Pirate eh? Well ye best hold on to yer briches and hide yer rum, because bein' a pirate ain't all treasure chests and wenches. Nay, we pirates be the most hunted sods on the high seas, and ye can bet yer doubloons that ye'll be target numero uno to all those prim and proper Nationals that be sailin' the high seas with ye.

That said, here be a quick introduction on how to go about gettin' yer sea legs an' playin' the King's Navies fer fools! Good luck me hearties, and give no quarter!

Mandatory Basics:

-Yer starting ship be called a Basic Cutter; it be crewed by 40 bloodthirsty curs and ye have a total of 12 – 4lb guns (6 on each side) as yer main means fer plunder. Yer ship be very weak, however it be not as affected by winds as the larger ships. Ye will have the advantage of speed and be less impacted by the wind's direction. Take note that this ship rocks back and forth, making aiming difficult, so be sure to get a feel fer how yer ship handles at different speeds. Yer yacht costs 0 gold to repair and ye get free replacements every time it sinks. (That be a pirate's favorite type 'o ship: free!) The yacht can be unforgiving as it has very little in the ways of armor, so load double shot and get nice and close to everything ye be tryin' to shoot. Ye want to end the fight as quick as possible.

-Ships that ye buy have 5 durabilities, meanin' they can be sank 5 times before the ship be gone fer good.  Captured ships only have 1 durability, meanin' they sink once and you lose everything on it (such as canons and upgrades, be careful when putting good stuff on captured ships)

-The purpose of the game at this point be to earn experience to level up yer captain (i.e. you), allowing ye access to a larger crew, and thus being able to use a larger vessel.  Furthermore ye need to generate gold in order to repair/refit/upgrade/buy new ships and modules. This be done by attacking enemy AI ships (pve), enemy players  (pvp), or by taking advantage of the early trade build.

-Yer starting port is the Pirate capital in the Caribbean, none other than Mortimer Town!

-There now be an in-game map to help ye set yer course! All ye's have to do is press "M". Now the map won't tell yer location, but ye can get a general idea as to where ye be.

If'n ye need a more comprehensive map, thar be a community map that be a bit more detailed as far as ports and their owners:

(use the port lookup function and click Matthew Town and the map will point out the spot for you)

Short Term Goals:

-Learn the basics of shooting/sailing, lest ye be acquainted with Davy Jones.

-Replace yer Yacht with a captured Pickle or Privateer

-Team up with another pirate player for huge success chance increase

  • -BEWARE- Pirates can attack other pirates with no repercussions, so don't trust every Sam and Sally that sails yer way, or at least don't be too surprised when they turn their cannons on ye.

-Level up to Rascal fer the ability to effectively crew one of the above listed ships

Where do ye go to hunt?

- EDIT: Even after Early Access, many of these locations hold merit as starting areas. However the atmosphere and ownership of ports may have changed. -

Pirates get one o' the shorter straws of the bunch: Matthew Town tends to be heavily trafficked by other players, and so PvP usually be very prevalent in the surrounding waters. These be very dangerous waters and it be not advised that new players stick around here long. This said ye have a few options to choose from right out the get-go:

  • Option A: Sail due West until ye hit the norther coast of Cuba. If ye do it correctly ye should find yerself starin' at the Spanish port of Guibara. Now don't start plunderin' just yet. Instead, follow the coast west, until ye hit the Pirate port of Cayo Romano. This will be yer now home/outpost fer a while as ye can take cruises back east to plunder the many Spanish shipping lanes in the area, and then return to Cayo Romano fer repairs and refitting.

  • Option B: If ye feel like sailin' fer a Little Longer, ye can sail north From Cayo Romano and hunt English shipping in the Bahamas. There be a number or Pirate Ports here, but the traffic of English ships is also a little less active. That said, this area is much safer for new players as there are seldom other veteran players here. Sail directly North from Cayo Romano until ye hit the large island of Grand Bahama. From there, follow the coast West around the island until ye hit Morgan's Bluff. set up an outpost here, then head due East to plunder English Merchants sailin' around Nassau and other English ports. EDIT: Morgan's Bluff is a conquerable port. For a more secure port, nearby William's Bay is a free port.

  • Option C: This be the long haul option; sail all the way back to the original Pirate starting port of Vieques and its neighboring pirate port of Pasaje in the Lesser Antilles EDIT: Pasaje is now a neutral port and is inaccessible to pirates!- 9/10/2015 This one requires that ye sail the lengths of Hispanola and Puerto Rico, but the payoff is great: when ye get to Vieques, a short sail further east will see ye at the shipping lanes between 4 Nord Alliance ports; there are almost always ships to be plundered here! So here's what ye do, when ye leave Matthew Town, sail South East until ye hit land. This will be Hispanola. Now follow the coast east until ye can't follow it east no more (I believe there is a port there now, the Spanish Port of Punta Cana is a good place to stop) Now break off the coast and continue heading east. You should hit the Island of Puerto Rico. Sail around the island and after ye get around it, sail east just a little bit more. Depending which side ye took, ye will end up at either Vieques or Pasaje, it really doesn't matter which. Pick yer favorite of the two, set up shop, and head east to plunder the ships sailing under the Nord-Dansk Alliance!

How do you Capture an upgrade?

This best be done in pairs, I HIGHLY recommend finding a partner fer this.  The 2 of ye are going to look for a lone Privateer or Pickle.  Once ye find him, ye attack, and there's 2 ways you can go about this. (Boarding mechanics as of July 18th, 2015)

Method 1 – The Legit Way.  Use ball shot to drop their hull to 50%, then switch to grape and reduce their crew to below yours (by a margin of about 5).  This takes time and is the less preferred method (we be pirates anyway, no reason to start actin' legit now)

Method 2 – The Easy Way.  Suicide capping.  One player boards the enemy ship as soon as possible (don’t even need to shoot them, just catch them), because this player is boarding with a smaller crew vs a larger, they will lose, but the enemy ship will have low crew, while this is going on the second player pulls up beside the AI and boards right after his team mate loses.  The defeated player re-spawns and meets up with his team mate who now has a nice, new ship, and ye use that ship to do method 1 and board an upgrade for player 1 who suicide boarded.

**With these 2 newly acquired upgrades you should find many more targets that are within your reach, stick around yer  hunting grounds until ye rank up to Midshipman.

Mid-Term Goals:

-Advance to Scoundrel in rank

-Relocate to better hunting grounds

-Acquire gold to buy a Navybrig/Mercury/Snow OR bank and save for a Surprise for later in the game (viable if you’ve captured a few backup ships to sail in)

What’s next?

Fer pirates, there be but one goal: Survive. But now that ye've got the basics down, and if'n yer fealin' up to it, why not make a daring and defiant return to the dangerous waters o' Matthew Town and test yer hand at PvP. Otherwise, either sit pretty in yer current hunting grounds and rack up loot, or explore to yer hearts content. I don't care much s'long as yer not encrouchin' on my territory.

Buying your first ship:

Ideally once ye hit Scoundrel, ye'll want to upgrade to a 120 crew ship, a brig/navybrig/mercury/snow. You can skip this ship rank if a higher level player helps you capture a few of these.

Once you have a ship that supports your 120 crew limit from the Scoundrel rank ye be good to go, all the trader ships can now be captured without firing a shot, you can now engage and sink/capture other ships of your level, and your well on your way to Dread Pirate and where the game really picks up!

That be it me swabs, now ye be set to pillage the high seas!

Thanks again to Flavalicious fer gettin' the ball rollin'!

Another option is to start as one nation and then turn pirate, thereby placing yourself in a good hunting zone. Probably want to do it within range of another pirate or neutral port, though.

In that case, the player would want to use their respected nations starter guide. I also think it would not be wise to make an outpost close to a national starting port/capitol, especially the one that you just attacked and where word is surely spreading of your treasonous mutiny.

Also Pirates don't have access to neutral ports.
