Co-op Captain and Gunner... fun or not?

Recommended Posts

Seems to me it would be great fun to team up with another player on the same ship for a fleet engagement. One player in charge of position, tactics witin the fleet, the other in charge of gun loading, aiming, firing. Communication would be essential, just like in the actual engagements.

I'm not envisioning a complicated mechanism, just a division of the current steering and gunnery modes/views across two players.

I have to imagine this came up before (2013?) but didn't find a matching thread.

Thank you.

slight copy off guns of icarus

Not in the slightest. GoI work because there are NO gunners or repair guys. There are guys who specialize in one thing or another, but everyone does everything around the ship - even the pilot can come down from his post and help on guns or repairs (IINM).

The way it would NOT work is with dedicated pilot / repair guy / gunner and spotter. Because it would take a great gameplay and separate it into bland, repetitive and a lot fo the time boring slices. It's not even worth considering, especially that since we can both sail a vessel, who would want to sit on guns all the time and just click from time to time to only reinforce the monotony?

How many co-op tank driving games are there? Space ships? Cars with guns are a part of bigger thing, never on their own... why? It's exactly because this formula does not work. It takes a whole game and separates it between players, making it just so much easier to fall into monotonous, bland and forgettable experience.

For this,Pirates of the Carribean managed to put it off....The owner or Captain of the ship would pilot the ship while, other players can join the Captain on his vessel and take ownership of a gun where the player in control determines how its fired etc

For Naval Action, perhaps a Gun Deck officer(or wadeva its called),where the player joining the owner and captain of a vessel would be in charge of his own gun deck for either the left or right broadside(applicable to multi level SOL"S) and determine what is fired etc etc.Ability to repair guns and restore guns.

,something along that line, thus removing monotony as there is constantly something to do

That game was also incredibly arcadey and, honestly, really really bad.

If the scope of the game was smaller, and wasn't a MMO, and was going to be a co-op game then yes, I could see this. But its not.
