Le commerce de Marseille - what a beautiful name

By the way.. What is the best known and most famous french ship? Like British Victory or US Constitution or spanish galeons.

The one that says France - just by looking at it. (1680-1820 period preferred)

Soleil Royal is what first pops up in my head

The generic Frigate is made up from a couple of different plans, so not a specific ship. Thinks she's french, remember seeing her as l'Aurore but the model now has a british-style stern gallery.

I hope they give it a name though, make the names all follow a similar style like "HMS Suprise" or "Suprise-class frigate".

The generic frigate is the 'HMS Ajax' which is a fictitous vessel that is sold as a model kit with plans http://fatboxsoftware.com/communities/6/004/011/540/116//images/4585753213.png

which is essentially a modernized version of chapman's frigate shown in plate 33 http://www.sjohistoriska.se/ImageVaultFiles/id_3063/cf_1768/33.JPG The modeler renamed the ship L'aurore when he built it to fit in with the storyline of a work of naval fiction. she is somewhat reminiscent of a french vessel, with her horseshoe stern and tumblehome, but is very un-french in her headrails and small size for her armament.

OKay okay I am beeing the smartass here:

That frigate is a made up ship

It is loosely based on a frigate Diana.

We will have "hebe" class yes.

That was the answer from Abmin to my question regarding the Frigate they actually have ingame, next to surprise and Constitution.

Dunno if this link has been posted earlier but here goes.

http://www.sjohistoriska.se/sv/Fordjupning/Sok-i-samlingarna/Arkiv/F-H-af-Chapmans-arkiv/ChapmanNet/ChapmanNet1/

It contains drawings of ships taken from ARCHITECTURA NAVALIS MERCATORIA  (thanks to the museum of naval history for putting that online :)  )

And for thoose who likes the Vasa i simply suggest that you simply put in her sistership Äpplet ( The Apple ), they were built  at the same time, but Äpplet was completed after the Vasa and they would make some adjustments to the ship's hull ( they made her wider ) and she actually sailed for 31 years until she got sunked.

another sugestion for french ships:

HMS Implacable was a 74-gun third rate of the Royal Navy. She was originally the French Navy's Téméraire-class ship of the line Duguay-Trouin, launched in 1800. She survived the Battle of Trafalgar only for the British to capture her at the subsequent Battle of Cape Ortegal. In British service she participated in the capture of the Imperial Russian Navy 74-gun ship of the line Vsevolod (Russian: Всеволод) in the Baltic in 1808 during the Anglo-Russian War.

sadly i cant find shipplans of here maybe we could slap her stern on the Bellona hull?

her figurehead and stern is at display in greenwich i heared/readed maybe someon of us that lives in UK gave here a visit? maybe the museum has some plans of her lying around

Among other ships I'm working on HMS Superb, a British built version of the Temeraire class, so more or less Implacable's half-sister. Could probably even use the Implacable's stern gallery for her, the one in these pictures is borrowed from HMS Malta. I can't find details of Superb's stern gallery and would like each to have a unique stern.

I believe someone else is working on a separate Temaraire-class model too, but if not we can just adapt Superb, the differences are only stern gallery, bow/headrails, bulwarks and rigging so much less effort than making a whole new model.

The Implacable was heavily Anglicized. This can be seen by comparing her plan to that of a Temaraire class vessel still very much in french form, like the Pompee.

http://collections.rmg.co.uk/collections/objects/80952.html

There is more to the national identitiy of a vessel than how the bow and stern looks, the proportions and form of the Bellona would make her quite an odd looking 'french' vessel with a different bow and stern.

  • 3 weeks later...

Fleuron (one of the most elegant ships ever, imo), Belle Poule (1765, quite a bit of history for this one and the only vessel I know that inspired a hairstyle :P) and pretty much any of the frigates or 74s designed by Sané.

If I'm not mistaken all three versions of La Belle Poule could be used in this game:

  • the 26-gun frigate Belle Poule (1765), famous for her duel against the English frigate HMS Arethusa on 17 June 1778, which started the French intervention in the American War of Independence; the British 64-gun ship of the line HMS Nonsuch captured her in 1780 and she was broken up in 1801.
  • the 40-gun frigate Belle Poule (1802–1806), which acted as a commerce raider in the Indian Ocean until the British captured her in 1806
  • the 60-gun frigate Belle Poule (1828–1888), famous for bringing back the remains of Napoléon from Saint Helena to France in 1840; she was under command of François d'Orléans, prince of Joinville, and was painted black for the mission

(I got an 1/200 model kit of La Belle Poule 60-gun frigate and would like to sail it with her predecessors)

If I searched correctly the second Belle Poule would also fit in with her sisters too.

And because of I am a great fan of the frigates, here aresome  other classes of frigates that could fit in

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leda-class_frigate

I'm not sure but someone already mentioned the HMS Trincomalee and she is the part of this class.

not really there are a few things here and there but nothing that cant be changed it would be a nice vessel

Actually, no. Literally everything is wrong.

You can't fix it any more than you can make some adjustments to an image of Homer Simpson and come up with a photorealistic depiction of a human being.
