The best naval warfare games, an article by wargamer.

Naval warfare has a rich history dating back to ancient times, spanning countless conflicts that have relied on access to the world’s oceans. Fleets and flotillas have been crucial for the logistical transportation of materials, goods, treasures and troops. In combat, naval vessels have the capability to strike a decisive battle against the opponent or interdict against their supply lines. Undoubtedly, this is an important branch of a nation’s military, but how does this element of warfare translate to videogames?

Those who are looking for naval warfare can find games that are worth an investment, whether more arcade-style combat, or developing the strategy for an entire battlefleet. The following titles are absolute plays for the admiral-minded types looking to expand their naval-themed experiences.

Primarily, the games presented are of two sorts: the wargame-likes – where it is more about an arcade or pure battle experience, and the simulations – where understanding of mechanics and planning accordingly can take a whole afternoon if need be.

There is a distinct lack of age of sail going on there, I would far prefer to play Empire/Napoleon total war's naval gameplay than a few of those listed on the article, something that seems very biased to world wars, If only there was a good MMO age of sail game out there that I could sink a few thousand hours into with beautifully modelled historic sailing ships.

@Captain Jean-Luc Picard

Great website fella, with strategy and tactics in the forum. Just joined “Norfolk nChance”

https://store.steampowered.com/app/2910/Fleet_Command/

I used to love playing this game

@Fluffy Fishy

Napoleon Total War with Darthmod was brilliant. The sailing game I remember the vivid details of the ship you zoomed in on. Wonder if I play it now how it stands up against NA-OW?

Shogun2 – Was a great with the added near shore ship sailing element also...

Amazing idea fluffy...

Yeah but some idiot would have Captain Jack Sparrow, a Sea Monster and loads of mods added into it. I want a raw MMO Master and Commander Style with a Russel Crow drinking bad tasting rum...

 Norfolk.

Same with Naval Air (ww2)

War in the Pacific being the only one that has the strategic and operational level at "insane" levels well focused on that air naval war.

There's absolutely no games that I recall where carrier TF are depicted properly.

War in the Pacific Admiral Edition also has supply ships that have to cross entire oceans before delivering those poor isolated troops what they need, including the fuel for those planes, it can take months to plan a major operation, assemble the supply ships and their escorts, have them cross and reach their destinations. The logistics in this game in relation to the use of ships is one of the best i have seen. And there are some very excellent mods on top.

I would love to see someone remake War in the Pacific with an updated interface, better graphics and gameplay, and less micromanagement on a real-time or WEGO engine.  I'd also like to see a WitP-like treatment of the Mediterranean theater of WW2.

Yeah Fred, the Med is definitely one of the most rich environment in naval history and often one of the fewest to be used *shrugs*

Regarding the remake of WitP, damn take my moneys !
