My reasons why this Game will never Succeed....

Recommended Posts

Now the Title is already telling alot about what Direction this Game will be going in.

So lets get Started.

The Reason why this Game will never Succeed is Super Simple and Completely Obvious.

So Obvious that it might be Hard to grasp I guess.

The Reason this Game cannot possibly Succeed is that the Devs cannot Decide on what they want this Game to be and try to Cover all Angles a little thus driving away the majority of the Players because hardly anyone really fits into the Game.

You See.

For a Good Open World Game the First Decision you make. Is if you want it Player Based or Content Based. Or to use other Terms.

Do you want your Game to be PvP Based with the main Content being by Players. Or do you want the Game to be PvE Based with the main Content being in the Game for the Players.

And here Naval Action unfortunately Fails.

Because Naval Action tries to Run the Main Content in PvP.

There is little to no Protection from being Attacked everywhere. And there is not much to do aside from Fighting each other.

Meaning that the Main Focus is Players Fighting other Players.

However while the Content is clearly the PvP Aspect. The Remaining Game is completely PvE Based.

You need to Grind through an Incredible Boring amount of Repeating the same thing to get into anything that even allows you to have any Chance in PvP.

And you need further Grinding to actually Sustain PvP because Ships and Upgrades as well as Materials etc etc etc. All come from PvE.

And here is a Fatal Flaw.

Because you see.

Players which will Put up with Grinding and Building up Stuff. HATE to be Attacked at all times by other Players.

They will NOT PLAY AND NOT GRIND unless you Give them a Large Safezone where they can actually work without constantly being Bothered.

They might like a small Risk Challenge of getting a Single High Profit Transport by Crossing from one Safezone into Another.

But in General unless you allow them to go about their Business without being in constant Danger of PvP THEY WILL NOT PLAY PERIOD.

Meanwhile the PvP Players are of course the other Side. Because PvP Players will usually be the Type to Crave Action. They want to Fight. And they dont want to Fight 1 Hour a Week and then go Grinding for 20 Hours. THEY WANT TO FIGHT 9 OUT OF 10 HOURS THEY PLAY.

And they wont be Putting up with Grinding all the Time just to Sustain being Able to PvP.

Now Take a Guess what this Game does.

Right. It Requires both. Tremendous Grind AND Constant PvP Danger.

In Short. The 2 Largest Player Groups WILL NOT PLAY.

Thanks to that we only have left the small Group of Old Players. Which could Build up Tremendously in Older Times with Large Safezones thanks to which they had lots of PvE Players and thus now got Large Reserves and Storages to Maintain PvP.

But no New Players are coming. And the Old Players are leaving one by one over time.

As long as this Continues this Game will NEVER Succeed.

The Devs Need to Decide.

Either they Say. Ok this Game should be about PvP.

Then they Need to Completely Remove the Grind. They need to Start Players so that they can Fight others Right Away and with Minimal Effort to Sustain Fighting others.

If its Takes 2 Weeks just to get a Proper PvP Ship with which you aint just instantly Raped 999 out o 1k Players will not Play.

Needless to say they also need to make Reward Mechanics for Fair Fights and Penalty Mechanics for Ganking and for Fighting Enemies that are vastly below your Level.

Or they Say. Ok this Game should be more PvE based.

Then they Need to Implement Large Safezones or Simply Turn things around and instead of having Safezones. Have Combat Zones.

So that the smaller PvP Community can Fight in Combat Zones about Special Rewards etc. While the Large PvE Community Works on the Remaining Map in PvE to Supply the PvP Community with Ships, Upgrades etc etc.

I dont care which one.

But Seriously Decide on One Thing.

Otherwise this Game will Forever be Stuck on having a few Hundred Players Tops.

Yes and no. The size of the project is way too big for a small studio like GL, so there is zero chance for a functioning OW with story driven quests, exploration, unique island etc cuz it needs a ton of ressources to develop those. NA will always have broken mechanics and exploits, there is just no way around it.

In what they fail and failed big time in my opinion is dealing with trivial problems. They focus on one problem and rework it with a big patch and move to the next, instead of tuning the last patch. Thats why PvP zone RoE is still not fixed, 1st rates were steel ships for more than half a year and Wasa was completely OP for such a long time.

@rediii How do you feel when you read your forum title? :P

Somewhere I read that the new imported ships are op. Hm and they require 250crew. They even come with 1 click.

250 crew is doing the tutorial and exams which are all different.

I don't see your boring grind in this game anymore. So should be huge success now? No?

This early access had no succesful idea since implementation of open sea...

NA for 2 years now, 1 step forward, 2 steps back....Wandering in the fog, hoping to find a recipe to make numbers on servers higher.

Instead of solving problems, they create new ones, like Hercules and freaking Xebec, which made ALL shallow ships more or less useless.

🤣🤣🤣

Don't get me started here. Reinforcement zone,Capital Zone, NPC Fleets, Forts, Towers and the most important... Players from your own nation & friends & allies.

1. Land in Port Battles + 3 circle system

2. New combat mechanics

3. Port ownership by clans + friend list (doe taxes and maintenance is flawed)

4. PvP Marks purchased Ship notes & PvP Marks purchased upgrades

For me 4 best improvements over past 2 years

All these gimmicks are more or less not important.

Polishing surface will not help the game, untill it becomes worth playing again. Playing NA is boring at the moment, since there is not much to do, when you log in, and you already have everything you can have.

People are asking for THINGS TO DO in game, also known as CONTENT, and Game Labs does not reply. And not since last year, but for 2 yeaars now.

Once again, if this is is going to be pure PVP/RVR pew pew sailing simulation, with worthless trading goods, bit of crafting, and something what admin calls "economy",(and i have no clue what economy in NA is, since there is no economy in NA), it is never going to be MMO, but only MO.

What this game need is this:

Larger safezones. Where people can run missions and make some profit in safety only basic upgrades will drop here.

More Incentive to get people out of the safe zones, the good upgrades will only drop outside the green zones, here the real profit can be made, shipyards and crafting should give way better chances at rare ships outside the greenzones.

More pve content, more stuff do t, like trade missions for a huge profit, epic events for 1 player, treasure fleets sailing around with ai protection etc..

Improved rules for pvp areas so its not a gank all the time. Also rare loot should be obtained from this.

After battle loot screen: so the annoyong race to get your loot in time( waste of game time) is gone, also when playing with strangers the race to the sinking ship is gone.

Rvr needs more reason to capture ports, most towns are useless and arent worth the trouble, maybe some special trims for craftable ships can be crafted in certain towns (nassau refit when crafted in nassau for example)

Economy fix, stupid contracts with people outbidding each other with 1 gold doesnt make sense.

More balanced ships, we are at the speed bellona, and le requin meta atm.

ah just my 2 cents here..

The grind has always been a massive boring part of the game and many after multiple wipes and changes gave up on doing it over and over, the have made things alittle easier with the DLC ships though the game needs some fundamental changes to the economy to tie the rest of the game into the PvP aspect.

The Crafting and building should be quite simple and items easy enough to get, a busy economy creates a more populated playing base building selling and using ships/ modules for PvP etc, these overpriced hard to come buy knowledge books or expensive modules just create a greater grind barrier and people get sick of trying to achieve them to feel competitive while constantly getting ganked and destroyed along the way.

Why are these modules/ knowledge so much of a grind to begin with, it slows down people wanting to get out there and fight and having some fun instead of the mundane same rinse and repeat grind, POTBS had far more modules/ customization in-game and they were all easy accessible and craft-able and sold all around the map and players sailed to pick up cheaper modules and items making the OW look busy, this game doesn't have that, you have a look on the market and anything good is millions and or never available as its far to valuable to sell on market its better to keep and use in clan or get even more for privately, this doesn't create more balance or a functioning economy so why would you create such a flawed system to begin with, surely there are game you can get idea or example from to figure it out, hell the real world gives us easy solutions but yet we are still stuck here since 2014 slowly going no where enjoyable atm.

I would personally enjoy a way to more directly conduct warfare against another nation. Rvr is one thing, but its a long boring process of hostility, then a full day wait till you get a battle with a limited number of participants.

What happened to raiding? It would be awesome if I could grab a couple clan mates and go raid a high tax port to basically steal the cash it produces for a day.

I already got my 40 dollars worth of fun a long time ago...so all the fun Im having now is just gravy. Yes, things need working on, but I still believe this game has a bright future.

  1. There are huge safe zones ingame, most nations have 2 of them..
  2. There never where safe zones like the once we have now, only capital waters. And they only covered the capital port of the nation..
  3. This would kill of the entire crafting and trading aspect of the game. The risk would be zero and the fun gone. And if they do not grind players are not forced to learn the game and test out different ships.. So they will all suck!
Edit: But easier access to ships for new players I get..

And you should consider adding: "In my not so humble opinion" somewhere.. 🤣

Everything @Banished Privateerlisted are player requests. So maybe devs just should stop listening to us and do their own thing. Might be better right? Or we should stop asking for stupid stuff?

I agree that devs should do what they think is right and ignore the extreme opinions on both sides.

Every topic we have totally polarized opinions, total PvP vs more PvE content/protection for new players.

As with most things in life the answer probably lies somewhere inbetween.

There is only one reason this game is not a great seller. The genre and age of sail. This is a good game compared to the industry standard. Really good to be fair. There are many balancing issues if you ask me but overall its a good game.

Yeah, safezone :):)

I have 1500 hours, I was afk in SAFEEEE zone. Le requin attacks me, (actually it was fun for me, but imagine you are the rookie) so just tried call reinforcement button. Boom a deadly Mercury ship spawns ! next I saw the Le Requin farting on the mercury and ignoring him completely, this 6th rate was coming at me with 340 crew, for a rage boarding.

This is your safezone, OK ? What if allies join to save the rookie, Le Requin just rides into sunset against the wind with a speed of 15.5 knots.

So instead of finishing the game, improving the game, solution to problems. We have Hercules and Requin, I really do not understand. I was very optimistic about this game, but I am not sure anymore.

Some small things we can argue about but he is telling the truth.

PvE game where you can do PvP.

The question is how long admin needs to understand, admit and react. Do we need a year or 10 more? He will go down proud, never admit?

How many bought the game? Enough to say there are players interested from the genre? Definitely enough.

The combat sucks. Why so many good PvP players left the game already? Did they see and understand something what the rest did not? Maybe you guys can ask from your old NA heroes why they quit? Where did they fail and bring the information back to forum.

Ship balance, gear balance sucks, why to have 3 end game wood types and not 9? Why we have to keep lying to devs about this?

RvR, who really wants to grind bots to get in a Port Battle? I think even devs said that this is not optimal, I at least think they did say that. Why it takes so long to get forward from here?

PvP marks are good? PvP marks to buy ships is a band aid to economy that does not work. The same thing with random crafting. Probably both features can be removed when devs make a working economy.

I know I always say S about the game, because simply so many things went backwards..  I make an exception and here goes couple good things.

1. Central structure is good. Improvement to the void armor issue.

2. Bow/stern tanking has been fixed. Not sure if the values are exactly the right but an improvement.

3. New sailing physics are a step to right direction. This has been bad for the combat balance but can be hopefully fixed.

4. New graphics are nice. Somehow OW UI is a bit hard to get used to, does not feel as intuitive as the old one. Still, clearly an improvement.

Fucking pieces of shit those guys are. Never do they consider that it might be the 2000 hours that is making them sick of the game. Some people expect a magic patch but at the end of the day it will always be ships shooting a ships and the wind.

I think they missinterpreted "community driven development". Because this doesnt mean that you dont need any concept for your game. Players know what they like, but not how a game works. Devs have to figure this out and then keep it on the right path. They are responsible to ask the right questions and to check if complains are reasoned. That they blamed the community already for "bad" decisions shows that they arent aware of their responsibility.

How do you explain past player counts beeing up to 6 times greater?

You should rate a game based on how it is promoted, not on how much hours you got in it. A game threw away its potential, its going to get a bad review even after 2000 hours.

newly released on steam and games tend to loose 90% of playerbase after 2-3 weeks. Its rare for games not to. Devs dont market and that also is a BIG issue. Most entertainment products have 50% of the budget for marketing.
