Better yet, it can be a variety of mods and woods, but same for everyone. One time it can be a lo/wo indef with elite french, another time eg a fir/fir surprise with copper plating.

You pay for entry, but don't have to craft the ship.

That makes no sense to do what so ever, it is much simpler for all ships in tourneys to be oak/oak with no perm upgrades. That way there is no silly bouncing or repairing almost 50% of your ship, just a straight up brawl, which is what those battles should be

I love the idea of no mods but I dont know whats worst man. Meta mods or demasting meta? I don't think I will take part with no mods. If anyone wants to try dueling me with no mods they can try and see how fast masts are gone. Suprises carros no mods 1 broadside. Trincos carros and longs 1 or 2 3 max. You really want to play without mods?

That's what those battles should be to you. If I participated in them, I would simply demast. No point aiming at hull at all. One salvo, maybe two, you're dead.

To me those should be teak / teak ships with French rig, copper plating and a mod for turning, as it requires more finese and mistakes have large consequences.

To someone else those should be lo/wo, as he prefers tank fights.

Only variety can meet all goals and has an additional bonus - it makes tourneys more interesting by providing more varied content.

It also gives advantages to different play styles, not promoting just one (eg in case of oak/oak bare 5th rates mast sniping)

Masts can be adjusted in general still

But please no playerowned ships / mods in tourneys.

Maybe have them in a "upgrade pool" free to choose from for everyone

the problem with masts is that they have not been adjusted in 3 years. Was there ever a time dismasting was ok? Lets be honest. If good players like ourselves have to agree to use certain ships and certain mods something is terribly wrong with the game. You are right. Mods are unacceptable in a skilled based tournament but no mods make the game unplayable. You know I am a good dismaster. You probably know I never start dismasting in duels because I HATE taking a cheap win like it. The 2 of us have fought and sank each other many times. I don't think I dismasted you once. If I dismast you that doesn't make me better. No mast gg. 0 Tactics involved really. You can dismast for most positions. If a tournament happens and the meta is dismasting there is no way ill take part in it. Ok i probably will for the fun of it.

Myself and moscalb once had 3 duels in a row. I cannot remember who won more often but I do know that the winner always had the ability to dismast and the looser couldn't pen. One of us won by demasting so the looser took more mast and pen mods in the next one. So who is better of the 2 of us? I still have no idea because that wasn't a fight in my eyes. Its a joke.

That's not how I remember the game before mods were introduced.

Without mast mods you demast the enemy and he already lost. You either take down one more mast, rake him and board or go for his weaker side which he can't defend. That's what makes game not fun.

Have you sailed a suprise in the last while? You can have 32 carros. It takes a 32 carro 5 hits on a suprise to dismast. Without a mast mod a suprise is useless

708902573_HerculesYachtvsBellona.thumb.jpg.3765a492cb92ed492a2255f35e10842f.jpg

Interesting little engagement between me on my yacht and Pipolanoix on Hercules against a pirate on Bellona.

I was heavily damaged from an earlier battle but was in a position to tag the Bellona while she was close to the La Navasse towers so I did. In the instance it became clear the Bellona was also returning from battle, but not from heavy fighting as she had 91% sails but no hull damage. The towers put one or two rounds into her before they were out of range. The pirate repaired throughout the battle as well, so no shortage of reps. We quickly set about decrewing her. After a few minutes of sterncamping things became dicey. I took a broadside that nearly sank me and Pip's masts were ready to fall, with his bowsprit shot off. However, the Bellona's crew soon dropped near 350, approaching the critical level when she could no longer reload a broadside and repair simultaneously. Pip began hugging her side and taking down her hull with carronades while I suppressed the enemy's rum from astern. The pirate was no fool though and turned upwind, boarding Pipolanoix with about a 150 crew advantage, and again things looked bad. However, I camped out behind the bellona and put devastating point blank grape shot raking fire into her, killing over 120 crew and causing their morale to drop so much she had to disengage, making it out with only 11 morale. Now that Pip's Herc had the same amount of crew as the Bellona, the battle was ours to win and we did just that. Once the Bellona's crew was down to 130 I switched to shooting at the weakened side of the lineship, helping finish her off.

A fun little battle at any rate (pun intended)  that proves 7th rate ships are not to be underestimated when utilized in a supporting role even against 3rd rates.

What was a "large battle" became a small battle of @William Death in his glorious 'fatty' and myself in a Herc versus a Surprise and Constitution.

Initial 20 minutes was hitting a 1st rate and then "running the gauntlet" past all the US ships and being left relatively unscathed. Many US sailors decided to leave the battle, probably thinking they wouldn't be able to catch us, allowing us to turn back and fight those who stayed. the AI ships were entirely too far away to affect the upcoming 2v2 battle.

I was able to get the connie to turn away from the surprise allowing me to gun him (surprise) down and sink him. William decided to focus his efforts on the connie. I did not need to support him too much as by the time I got back to assist - the connie was already nearly sunk.

Thanks for the fight o7.

Nice little engagement up on the East Coast. Nothing super special here, but L'Ocean is still a tough ship, no matter how you slice it.

L'Ocean is so difficult to deal with, that I was a bit worried that I may have bitten off more than my dear old Constitution could chew (though I could always escape), but she did remarkably well, proving that even without much hull shape, she can still be a threat.

The fight started with me throwing some chain and doing my best to evade his broadsides. He didn't fire till he could hit me though, so this meant he wasn't wasting his double shot or charge. Unfortunately for him, I've done this sort of thing a time or two, so he didn't get the chance to fire at my hull too much. However, he also didn't fire at my masts when he could have, aside from a few shots that mostly missed.

Once I had him down to around 450 crew, I decided I'd try "side-hugging" tactics, just to see if it was possible. One hit and... "NOPE!" My Constitution was way too squishy for that.

So I went back to stern raking so I could eventually demast/chain (if necessary) and board him. By the time I got him to around 326 crew, one of my shots (using ball at this point) set him on fire. He decided to let the fire go and this is the result:

A0FDEDDF88B4123EB0EB22292CFE6C2A63BF8764

His build was LO/WO with Floating Battery and French Rig. I forget the other module he had, but the French Rig dropped into the loot.

Was fun. I hope the other party enjoyed it and maybe learned something from it. I got a nice screenshot from it too:

Also, I like the new higher BRs=more marks :)   (34PvP marks here)

A small collection of last two weeks skirmishes. I will try to remember things worth mentioning.

mJT8hR9.jpg

One of the first engagements on Essex. It tacks through the wind like no other frigate imo. Medium guns + pen mod + Elite French.

WvHL5qp.jpg

Very tough one against two Prussians. o7 Demasted the Bellona and killed it, rest of the fight we tried to kill each other, multirep system denied it though. Had a very good Bellona here I have to admit. Watching the  amount destroyed cannons, the victory obviously got decannonized once completely.

5b7zZiR.jpg

Noone got killed in here. Only worth mentioning as it was at Port Morant and the brits pbviously jumped out of a bttle and saw me. Was pretty much surrounded thanks to reinforcement zone RoE and managed to squirm free with mostly not more than 60% sails. Honestly I was a bit proud of that :)

UPLPd1P.jpg

Again in british RZ. Luckily for me not more joined. The first Diana was desmasted and down, but could escape because of me not tagging her (she was right next to me) in the brawl. The rest of them really gave me hell, the Conny did really good. o7

Teak/Wo Very Cramped Conny, meds and carros.

kHhMVdz.jpg

Kqcpvrv.jpg

The first one is actually the second battle of three I had this day at the Dutch. First I killed Conny and Endy, then Inger and P-Frig. In the second battle jumped after it was over the guys to be seen in the second screenshot. Sidefact, was talking to Gooser on dutch TS while the battle. Best regards! The surp only died because of the flipping bug.

This is how coastguard work should look like.

e1YosQl.jpg

In german there is a saying: "Das Glück ist mit den Tüchtigen" meaning "luck is with the diligent". Endy and Herc played smart and tried to stay with the Bellona. I got saved by maintenance, with a 30/70 chance of survival perhaps.

R1QCOyL.jpg

Classical "How not to coastguard". The player on Essex was actually Bellona but could switch ship before he sank, though he forgot to transfer crew and was boarded rightaway. Inger was first to die, they basically stayed together, aiming was "improvable" though. When Inger Bellona and Essex were down, the Buc left the Agi behind to die. i got killed because of greed returning to safezone and getting killed by the vets afterwards. 4/5 teak/wo Conny. two speedmods, pen mod, northern carp. meds and nadies.

1kU1q8p.jpg

The downfall of the Very Cramped one. Gotta say I like the Hercs BR pvp mark wise :P A tip to players that heavily outnumber a bigger enemy. Try to decrew more. Grape is your friend. Enemy gets much less dangerous if he/she can't reload.

2YmafQm.jpg

I was VERY salty about this one. My apologies. But that's basically happens when you're not on fast ships. Got ganked afterwards by two veteran Bellos, 5th rate  and Herc. Rage surrender.

Very nice stuff there @Palatinose

Questions

1. How do you like the essex? Does it stand up in fights like how you would want it or do you sail it for the 'difficult without chasers' factor?

2. In many screens you have sunk hercs - do you think that is poor sailing by the herc player or do you have some tricks in your sleeve when dealing with hercules?

3. Of the places you sail to - which is your favorite?

Oh I love the Essex. She turns beautifully, she is quite short and low in the water, her armament is mediocre, her crew distribution very good and her sailing profile makes her a great brawler. Her weaknesses are the masts, mediocre speed and ofc the missing chasers. As I usually not necessarily hunt very fast but stronger ships thats okayish for me. The masts have to be covered though. Either elite french or french and winged out ballast. I like her with medium guns and a rattlesnake. She is also cheap to craft.

Imo the Herc is not really special anymore. When enemies try to rake you just perform the usual way: sail close-hauled and hit the full break. Usually after some attempts you will hit the bowsprit. Find a good balance between hull and mast damage. Force to repair hull first, go for masts then, they are really weak. But sure, those three brits were not the most experienced players. Patience for a good broadside is the more important, the better the ship turns imo.

Frenchies - we have a understanding of mutual dislike :) The waters of the Windward Islands are usually rich fishing grounds. Once triggered, the slaughter usually ends with me dead, but it's always fun. Brits at KPR are the usual place to be when online numbers are low. Navasse/Tortue area is snacky. Dutch waters are fun in the evenings (17+ srv time), though this crowd is really not very pvp experienced. No offense.

Thanks for the answers.

It is nice to see another ship being used and I am glad it has some use in brawling. As most of the feedback i get are from players who argue speed is better than brawling, (i.e. fir/fir instead of something like te/wo) I always like to hear from someone who thinks about going into the fight to sink someone even if the odds are greater instead of running from someone first until the odds are in their favor.

The best way to coastguard is throwing disposable fast ships at them to keep them occupied and away from valuable ships.  Trying to chase raiders around with a real fleet is a waste of time.

I disagree. Depending on the enemys' vessel I'd say killing (safely - without losses) is better as driving them out. Inside the safezone noone will attack you with something bigger than a 5th rate (even that is pretty hard).

It's just that chasing raiders around for an hour or two usually just ends up wasting several people's time, and for the most part they just disappear over the horizon.

This evening in front of Carlisle.

Conny Classic was instantly boarded. Cutter, Requin, Brigg and Conny entered during boarding fight Pir.Frig/Conny Classic. Few min. later Bellona, Pirate Frigate and French Requin entered.

We killed the British Requin and the Consitution, but the Bellona could sink my Pirate Frigate. Trinco could leave the battle after reparing Riggs.

Both Swedish Ships (in this battle with Stars and Stripes) were build Teak/Teak.C2B56A963E6C98EE129F60DE5D0D53F7C30FBB0E

After a bit salt in the start we actually ended up with a fun fight in the patrole zone.

To the surprice to some danes, there is a new perk in the game called "Swedes leaking". We hope it soon will be possible for danes to get it to. Luckely in oure hour of need, we could pull the @Gorgons tactic out of oure playbook. Didn't win the fight for us, put even the odds against that devastating swedish perk.

Next time you bastard, do as you are told and we would have gotten another kill. But in all fairness Assasins is from Norway, so as we all know. All muscle and no brain. You cost me atleast 3 PvP marks. You know how many months it will take a carebear like me before I have the chance to get 3 more. Damn you.
