Are essential for OW pvp.

Double charge if you mastsnipe

Hold optimization if you want to be a bit faster

Fleet control if you want to board ships and use them later. :)

Pick a nice cheap ship and go out. Only in pvp you will get the experience to know which books and perms you need.

Hold optimization if you want to be a bit faster? Thought that was a traders perk.

Here you can play around with perk points to get aquanted with the possible combinations (save own copy):

I'd say it's easier to identify the perks that are useless for PvP ;)

What you should pick depends on your fav ship and it's build combined with what you intend to do with it; boarding fit, tank build, speed and so on.

What I'd recommend for you is to get cheap npc shop ships and go to patrol mission areas. Expect to be ganked, expect to lose and don't get discouraged when that happens. PvP xp grinding is harder, slower and much more expensive than PvE grinding, but you just said you wanted to learn PvP. You learn almost nothing from PvE and some of the good PvE habits are actually bad PvP habits. Set up outposts close to the patrol areas: Tumbado, La Tortue, Aves and Shroud Cay, this map might help you.

A list of unordered perks useful for PvP:

Double charge, double shot, prepared, determined defender, expert carpenter, (area control), rigging specialist and (carronade master).

If you get low on cash you might be forced to do PvE. Killing or capping ventres is the most readily available PvE grinding method that is close to max xp/time.

Practise this if you haven't already:

As Rediii said it can give you a few more out of your speed in a ship or allow you to carry more repairs and not be as effective by cargo. I got one char that runs it all the time cause he's in fast taggers.  He can also side line as a cargo runnner when needed lol

you get - speed depending on what % of your hold is filled. So with the same amount of repairs you have more free hold and are therefore faster

also riggingspecialist got nerfed to oblivion in my oppinion

Yah I been debating dropping it on most set ups other than the guy that runs light ships all the time that need every bit of sail help as he can get.

When i started PVP i used Fir/Fir ships because they are cheap and so i didnt care to lose them. I also looked in the shop everytime i was in port to look for good but cheap ships.

I mainly sailed Renomees and Surprises, once i lost 14 ships in 5 days. But after i noticed that i got better and that the Fir/Fir build is limiting my opportunitys i started to sail Teak/Teak.

Times have changed though. Demasting wasnt a thing, charge and double wasnt implemented. Right now i would recommend everyone who wants to start to sail a ship he can afford to lose. Even shop ships or captured ones. When you feel more comfortable in PVP start to use better ships. I was stressed as f*ck when i got a fight in the beginning. from the moment on i got routined and wasnt stressed anymore i used better ships. Basic idea is: Dont be afraid to lose a ship. you will sink many times before you sink others many times. As long as you look in your mistakes in the losses you keep improving.

To ships knowledge: I grind the first slot in PVE and the rest in PVP. At least for 3rd rates and below. the only ships i grinded more than 1 slot are 2nd and 1st rates.
