Which Frigate do you suggest?

Recommended Posts

I’d like to give a try to some Frigates up to 5th Rank (my max Rank i could atm reach).

I like fast and maneuverable ships overall, than at second place their power.

For PvP purposes, of course.

Any suggest?

Surprise, chasers upwind sailor cheap ship

Belle Poule, upwind sailor, very good brawler no chasers

Trinco, people think its good I hate it :D

Endymion

If you are new to pvp sail cheap ships to learn. You will sink a lot (like every pvp player does)

You might consider to visit shroud cay. Ships are cheap dont consume a lot of repairs. Perfect to start pvping

(Avoid Sin perdon for the beginning) :D

Pfrig is underrated in this patch IMO. Downwind it turns phenomenally well. Also can equip it with edinorogs and 12 pdrs.

Also if you are new to pvp watch many NA duelvideos. Think about who does what and why he does it etc. You can "train" there with predicting

Maybe even sail around freetowns in shopships and just accept every battle and think about the battle and what you could and should have done. Helps too

Basically every battle you have to decide with which tactic you have the best chances to win. Stay close to a enemy side to not get demastet or go for demasts yourselve. Hop into boarding early or not or go for crew or sails before. Or just go straight for hull.

Best tip you can get: If you lose a battle its your fault and not your ships or enemy upgrades. Its yojr fault and you did a mistake at some point or misjudged something.

With this attitude you learn automaticly because you look for the way to improve your decisionmaking in NA and not just search the reason somewhere else.

Every 1v1 is winable if you exploit the mistakes of your enemy.

There are also some things you will pick up sooner or later. Fhe sooner you get it the better:

- dont forget you see which sjde has loaded of yojr enemy. You also see if he switches ammo

- learn the whistles

- learn boarding and think why sometimes its better to click "agtack" at the start and switch later (or not)

- boardingbasics: 60 prep attack 25 defend. If you have less than 60 prep just press attack and change later or not

- Most ppl cant board and blame the mechanics. If you dont know his namenfrom leaderboard board him, it will be most likely easy

I already saw a good dozens of PvP videos, also your ones. They gave me a general idea how to good starting, but every battle is other than story, as you well know.

I suspected that be sunk is 98% my own mistakes and the 2% of rest is misfortune: i knew it, i already fought versus NPC ships. I bet in PvP none forgive you, and it will be good: hard way is still the best one, in PvP. Nice floating Teddy Bears are a tasty bite for all experienced sea dogs :)

Buy cheap 5th rates from IA (frigates, belle poules, surprise) - they ereally cost nothing - slap some repairs (you must learn how to use them) and throw yourself in every 1vs1 fight that you can find (open outpost in a free town and you will find some, while near capital ciities is too easy meeting gank squads).

Or just roam aroun bahamas in a snow ... PVP will find you sooner or later.

Running away from a fight you’re sure you cannot win, is cowardice here?

Recording your gameplay and watching it later really helps, you will instantly see so many obvious mistakes you made which you werent aware of before.

I suggest Belle Poule, great turning and upwind sailing profile. Cannons are a bit weak but you maybe can take carros now.

Even escaping is a skill that has to be learned :D

I am “working on it”: usually i sail with a basic cutter to learn combat and i choose always random encounters vs 6th Rank NPC ships.

Yesturday i run away from a trader (a trader!) that had 11 cannons each side: i wanted to try carronades and i played aggressively passing by the enemy ship very near. I have to calculate better the timing between a full shot and other, and yes: i have to learn the whistles. The trader almost devastated me: i had to run away, yapping like a clubbed dog. :D

Best all around ship is the Surprise and the Belle Poole.

But a good fast and agile ship is a Renomee followed by the Cerberus.

Granted the Cerberus sails a like a big Snow.   I have always preferred the Renomee, just a better fast and tough little ship, she lacks a bit of firepower but if sailed well there is very little it cant handle or run from.

no, but running will not make you learn (or, at least, it will teach only how to run better :D)

Curious, why not Endymion, what with being fast, agile and carrying very respectable armament?

This is coming from a PvE player so I have no clue about PvP.

That ship sucks. It's good in group , but not for 1vs1

Primary reason is cost.  The Endymion is expensive to build and replace.  Not to mention it isnt as good as the agile as some of the other ships.

I see. Makes sense. On PvE ships are pets, on PvP they are apparently cattle :)

The Endymion has its advantages, like it is a great upwind sailor.   And it has good firepower for the size... BUT it handles sluggish when compared to a Trincomalee, or the Belle Poole, which are both more agile than the Endy.  They may not have the firepower but they are more capable ships in the right hands.

I wanted to like the Endy, but it feels like a one trick pony now.   Really only good as a fleet ship(not NPC fleet) but when running with other players in heavier ships.  An Endy, Wasa, Aggie group is pretty scary.  Because you cant out run the Endy, and you cant outgun either the Wasa or the Aggie.

The trinco is epic with 25 32lb carronades on each side. It's all about damage. The heel really is as bad as they say though. If you sail wrong prepared to get leaked to death. 4 bow chasers is sick too.

Care to elaborate? What exactly sucks about it?

Turn Rate example:

3.25>2.29 (Almost -1 compared to all other frigates)

Same with Dps, it sucks. Master Belle Poule, it has hidden ball bounce bonus compared to all other frigates. Perfect ship angle will bounce 90% of enemys broadside.

It's likely a mix of me being somewhat rusty and the ship being oak/crew space with only the most basic mods, but my experience with the Belle vs an Endymion earlier was not good. 30%~ better turnrate was not nearly enough to overcome the Endy being better in nearly all other aspects. Fortunately the Belle only cost 200k, which is the only reason I'd recommend sailing it over a heavier 18pd frigate.
