Hardcore Mode

Recommended Posts

I've had on my mind for a little while now that something I would like to see in the medium to long term of Legends is a hardcore mode, where you can tick yourself into a box for a slightly different experience to play in. Having seen another post looking at the potential of this and outlining some of the ideas people might have for this and discussing what a mode might contain, here is what Liq said in the "Mast Hits" thread;

hardcore battle mode

  • No wind indicator
  • No auto skipper
  • No names (check the flags!)
  • No map
  • No freecam
  • No "Scoreboard" with hit counters

For legends maybe?  :)

I really like the majority of these suggestions here, the only detail I am apprehensive about are the wind indicator, as a captain would have known which way the wind was blowing from feel and little wind and little tools like weather vanes, the rest seems fantastic but I would also like to see a more realistic historical style adjustments to the game itself, hopefully Liq will flesh out his own ideas a bit here too as I'm not entirely sure how an absence of naming systems would go, but would like to see some way of identifying friendly and enemy ships, perhaps with some of the long hoped for customisation tools like naming your ship, and displaying certain flags on your masts.

Here are the main points of what I would like to see from a hardcore mode;

  • More Realistic Gunnery
    I'd like to see guns behaving more realistically, with the rocking and motions of the ship affecting the aim of cannons, it would also be cool if we could see firing upwind creating a fire hazard when sparks and wadding embers get blown into the sails, forcing players to risk setting fire to their own rigging or actually using battle sails a bit more, making the wind more important. It would be great to also see limited ammunition involved, with say 80 shots per gun for line ship and 100 for frigates, with also restricting specialist shot a bit more with about 5-8 shots per gun, taking historical load outs as examples. It would also be quite cool to see reload times slowed down a little, as the current reload times are somewhat optimistic, being taken from information recorded under training circumstances where the crew are fresh, ideally it would be amazing to see a fatigue system put in place similar to the total war games.
  • Proper Hull Strength
    hulls should become less flimsy, this would give a longer more drawn out battle truer to the real nature of how things were, where ships were very rarely sunk in battle, but generally surrendered before they would be in a situation that they would all drown or be killed, again ideally it would be really cool to see a morale system placed in game. Wooden ships were hugely more resilient than they are in the current standard build of the game, and while I like that we can have quick battles in about 30-35 minutes but sometimes I would really like to see a much more drawn out and hopefully tense experience, where a hardcore battle could expect to last a good 2 hours. It would also be good to see various parts become a bit more rugged like rudder and pumps, but still maintain vulnerability to well aimed shots.
  • Repairs/Healing
    I'd like to see repairs changed to a more sensible system, where instead of having kits/rum you would have a more aptly named Carpentry/Medical Supplies, which are used up over time instead of the current system where its one big kit affected by a cool down, although these measures should be balanced by it being a slow process and you should be able to assign a number of crew to make minor repairs and surgery taking away from fighting or sailing crew making the ship more vulnerable, ideally I would like to see repairs as a bit haphazard and in some way make them a bit weaker to future damage than the original hull, i'd also like to see this matched with a fatigue system I mentioned earlier where carpentry and surgery is tiring.

While I'm sure this isn't everyone's idea of what they might like to see in this kind of mode it would be great to hear some feedback of if or not other people would like to see this kind of hardcore mode and outline what themselves would like to see contained in a potential mode like this, whether they want it to be more simulator style or just a system for minor changes to make things a bit less gamey, either way I'd like to hear ideas.

Would like this too.

Hell, I'd even promote having the camera locked to deck only. That plus the lack of a map and names would make it a true challenge for organized fleets to meet in battle.

There's a limit to how realistic you can make this game without making it impossible for a single player to control a ship. In real life, the captain didn't have to trim the sails, aim the guns, carry gunpowder, swab the decks and prepare food all by himself. Relegating these tasks to the AI (auto skipper) or representing them with simpler more abstract game mechanics is neccessary.

the suggestion is to make an option for players to choose from, not default for everyone. War Thunder has a Sim Mode which the arcade players would never want to touch, and vice versa.

Anectode:

I wanted to see how good the sim mode was, I love planes but can't deal with arcade planes. Logged in on two different nights, noone there. Never logged in again.

I usually don't have this problem with sim mode for tanks. Especially on the weekend when WT runs special events for sim mode (ie; historical match ups :o )

Also I think it is much harder to fly in full real mode for planes than drive a tank in first person mode.

I bet.

I grew up on Flanker 1.5 net duel, Air Warrior, Warbirds and Aces High. ;)

Then again, War Thunder is well-known for being very arcady while there's a significant amount of games that do the >sim< part way better, so it's not that much of a wonder why its sim battles aren't popular. Let alone the lack of people who'd spend money on flight sim peripherals and then play a sub-par F2P game.

NA doesn't suffer from those things. But yeah, it'd be a down-the-line thing if numbers take off.
