NPC escort, novice, newbie

Recommended Posts

I'm new to the game. I do not have a very strong boat (and experiences) to compete against strong opponents. Everyday I'm attacked by a group of stronger players and I'm losing the ship, often with cargo. Losses are great. I would greatly welcome the opportunity to buy an escort for my small merchant ship. NPC escort or missions for players for a commission. I apologize for my English, but you understand what I mean.

Hello there captain.

You can already do this;

- make sure you have a Perk that enables the use of fleet - should be Fleet 1, Fleet 2 and Fleet 3

- Fleet 1 allows you to have 1 NPC fleet, Fleet 2 allows to have 2, and obviously Fleet 3 allows 3.

- When in your outpost you can right-click a ship and select "send to fleet"

- note: fleet ship must be equipped with cannons if you wish them to use cannons in battles

- note2: press manage crew to crew the fleet ships. Remember that to leave port, any warship( not trader ) needs minimum 70% of its maximum crew, so a 200 crew ship needs 140.

----

In battle, press M and you will see your fleet ships and give them orders.

Bear in mind that the NPC AI is not very good and any reasonable player will still be able to take you out so you lose not only your merchantman and cargo but also your NPC escort. The idea of hiring other players to escort you is one that has been raised before and it is possible, but the issue is they would want to charge you much more for their time than you could make in the voyage.

At present it is easier to make gold and xp from doing missions in safe zones rather than trading out where you can be attacked.

Have you tried shipping stuff with Trader Lynx? What are you sailing? What is your enemy hunting you with?

Archaos, is right sailing with AI escort will only make matters worse against a group of strong players.

Did you pick one of those "difficulty: impossible" nations?

Far from my Naval Action computer. If you could help with pictures we all would appreciate.

Not in game atm, but perk guide would be a great start. Especially when guys do not speak English. If you could pass it to Devs, it would be nice. I know they work on Tutorial, so might as well add that.  Unfortunately not all new guys are this patient and such simple problem could cost a bad review or refund.

Just really hope you all up there pay attention to small details like these.

Gladly many members of the community do act more than they post, thankfully :) I reckon their interest lies more in making guides and other content.

Special thanks to anyone keeping the wiki updated.

My losses for the last three days:

A fleet: 4x Trades Brig (Swedish attackers had ships Wasa)

B fleet: 1x Surprise, 3x Traders Brig (Swedish attackers had ships Wasa)

C fleet 1x Surprise, 2x LGV  (Swedish attackers had ships Wasa)

A fleet not help. I need a stronger escort. Or cargo insurance. Insurance would solve a lot of things...

Dealing with Wasa's is a pain to start with... everyone is dealing with that problem currently.

But it doesnt help where you maybe.  I am assuming you are out at the windward islands.  I would suggest starting over somewhere like Great Briton, Spain, or United States.  They have LARGE safe zones and have pretty safe home waters to let you grow.

Insurance has been rejected by Devs in past, if you like you can bring this topic to life again in Suggestions. Tell them you are new and show them your story. They still can't realize that some of their ideas and mechanics are killing population.

You can't fight warships with traders.  What you need is to not get caught in the first place.  As for "cargo insurance", I think at this point you'd be looked upon as a poor "insurance" risk and the "insurance premiums" would be beyond the profits you could generate.  If that were not the case you could be profitably "self-insured" and it wouldn't be necessary.  Just work on not getting caught in the first place.

There had been many valuable hints already. Making use of them will already reduce your losses. Just some minor additions:

- small but valuable goods (books, labour contracts) are best shipped in a basic cutter.

- T-lynxes with good upwind abilities and good turning rates are hard to properly tag in OW. A poor tag by the hunter is half of the prey‘s escape. :)

- don‘t try to run in a straight line. LGV and T-Lynx have nice upwind sailing profiles, use them and learn to tack properly and smoothly. The better turn rate of T-Lynx versus Prince or LGV vs. Wasa will put distance between you with every tack you force on the hunter.

The only thing a Trader Lynx has to worry about is a Privateer, Pickle, Prince, or another Lynx.   Seeing as those are as common as unicorn turds, you dont have to worry much about that.

If the hunter gets an upwind tag on him he's dead. Lynx can be completely demasted with 1 cannon ball. Never let the battle start with a larger ship upwind of you.

No it cant.. I have sailed the T-Lynx, I still sail the T-Lynx.   And the number of times I have been caught I can count on one hand, and still have 4 fingers and a thumb.

The T-Lynx has weak masts yes.. but you go so fast sailing at 45, that it is nearly impossible for someone to get more than one volley accurately off at you.

But as a rule you should never let ANYONE get the weather gauge on you, EVER, no matter what ship you are in.

I've completely demasted a lynx with 1 cannon ball and I'm pretty bad at demasting. You have to catch them downwind of you. They either need to pass your guns trying to get around you, or flee downwind which you will catch them at. It's a bad choice for a lynx either way hehe

I used to not bother with them. But people are hauling large amounts of good things in them now lol. I may get one in two or one in three which isn't bad.

A good hunter always has the wind gage on his prey. However there are circumstances where it's preferable to give it up. Like the other night when 7 Spanish tried to chase our 3 man group. We gave up the wind gage and dismasted them all the way in a running fight. They never caught us either and our slowest ship was 12.5 knts
