Big Patch #10: Map / Coordinates Feedback [Heavily Moderated]

Recommended Posts

I think everyone agrees with you.  We just want something more historical than an instant exact gps.  As you mention, exact coordinates, along with TS3/Discord/Nation chat, creates an ugly system full of ganks and counter ganks.  Hey, I've spotted an Indiaman.  I am chasing him, right now we are at 123, 456 heading north, converge on our location so we can capture him.  No one should want this (except gankers).

Sextant mini-game would be awesome.

Failing that, go back to how it was, with you are given a latitude and longitude and you have to estimate where exactly you are based on the grid lines, but make the coordinates you are given have a random reduced accuracy thrown in.

Excuse my ignorance, but could you or anyone explain what that is?

I never got gankt because of gps and in fact I was able to send for help when being pursued because I NEW WHERE I WAS and I wish you history Nazis would just let this be a game!

I still want GPS back!!!

more players enjoyed the game on release without coordinates. coordinates were a mistake.

this can help a little bit.  http://burningsail.com

This one is much better:

Naval Action Live Map Tool

https://yadi.sk/d/13s1C62oq65So   (355mb)

Its a tool, if you open, that gives you the Position of your ship.

Its simmilar to http://map.licornes.eu/,  but whitout pressing F11 and Copying the Cords into.

That means, this tool take automatic the cords into a map and show then your position in real-time.

There are two ways this could do this.  It either looks at game logs (not that accurate), or it looks at memory.  Either way, why should anyone trust it?  Unknown developer with unknown agenda and unpublished code.

lat/long grid on the map and a means of actually plotting progress across it (either manually or automatically), would be both realistic and immensely helpful for navigating around the game world.

A grid system was in the OW map, and was subsequently removed.  It isn't needed, dead reckoning is sufficient.

Dead reckoning is great if we had a plot tool, and the current map still has a grid, but only at lower zoom levels. Would like to see it scaled at all ranges. Furthermore, the purpose of the grid is to estimate distances, which there isn't a way to do currently. 1800 plotting tools and map tech would be plenty for this game, and still be realistic.

Perhaps it would be more immersive, and period-accurate.  I could agree with that, and wouldn't mind the addition to the game.  But we had no tools at all before, and I still maintain it was quite easy to navigate, since the map is full of islands and you learn with experience to recognize land masses.  That is also accurate for experienced captains of the age.
