Damage, Cannons, Repairs, Firing, Aiming - suggestions and feedback

Recommended Posts

I lost most of the cannons from low damage penetrations on the side.

I lost the crew because of boarding other ships, but you don't lose cannons while boarding.

PS: This was a battle versus NPC's, they were next to me most of the time, not at my stern. You can damage the stern from the side too.

The bow carronades on the large ships seem to be fairly useless now, since they have a much shallower firing arch given to them in the last patch their shots tend to go wildly over the decking. I have played mostly in a victory and a little in a bellona too, both have similar results where I aim as low as possible but the ball trajectory still goes a fair distance above the enemy deck.

Battles: The importance of stern raking was strengthened after the last patch and this is very good. But I can't help feeling that the tactical decisions during a PVP matchup were just cut off with the new damage model. It might be historical accurate or not: but what good battle gameplay means to me is that I have always a couple of choices and the opportunity to act and react. This is what makes battles interesting. It's quite like playing rock paper scissors -- dismasting, damage or boarding; maybe even a combination of them. Now it feels like rock and paper were just taken away so that only scissors are left. Boring and uninteresting. Why? I can't say that exactly but I assume that it has something to do with the lastest changes. Everybody is aware of crew so that loosing crew through boarding (even when winning) is overmighty. Dismasting is no option because it's nearly impossible (before the patch I managed to dismast a trinco with my frigate and this was a very exciting battle). Fighting against bigger ships dealing hull damage is silly, because of bigger planks. So this means that I have no chance against a bigger ship at all for now, and this is what I miss. Any given chance to win against a bigger ship, which happenend quite often in historical terms. Players who fight instead of running because they know they could have a chance. Was much better before. And now we have only port battles. Or PVP with running running running away. What a pity. Guess I better sail out, drop anchor and go fishing.

Don't take this the wrong way but if you think you can't win against larger ships anymore you need to re-evaluate your tactics. Demasting is much more difficult but I firmly believe that was a good decision because it had been way too easy for way too long. Too many people dismiss the effectiveness of a lot of the ships we have in game because they are not the "biggest" or "fastest" of have the "biggest guns" but I think that is a mistake. Many ships out there that people dismiss are just not using them to their strengths while minimizing their weaknesses. People who run every time they face a bigger threat or are outnumbered never end up improving. Conversely, if the only time people want to fight is when they have a distinct advantage they are not learning a whole lot either.

All ships in game are worthy. It all comes down to what goals each player sets for himself/herself.

Same with all types of wood, trim, guns and upgrade combinations.

Truth is, there are no single combo to rule them all. Some ships are quite versatile but they never beat a specialist.

Obviously a squadron can sweep and have several models to diminish the weaknesses while retaining an unknown superiority but if always fighting with the odds there is little to learn and almost no "testing" is even done as mistakes are forgiven and good use of the ship is unnoticeable.

It is not a rockpaperscissors at all.

You have misunderstood. I never did say that a ship is not worthy. My POV is that the latest changes had a very negative effect on battle strategy. You can't deny this, surely. Now it's all about bigger guns and thicker hulls. In fact, worthy smaller ships are made less worthy now.

Now as desmasting is much harder, you have no chance. Even if you can demast the ship, it can easily drag a repair out and while his sails go up again, your hull is already down.

Rules work both ways in PvP, everything being equal or similar, or am I missing something ? Desmasting is harder and chain is a valid choice in this case. I still find the wooden walls to get battered too fast but okay I think we have a compromise for all.

If NPC, they do not repair so they shouldn't be an issue especially because of their rinse-and-repeat routines.

Broadside of chains maybe a bit too accurate for longer distances.

or

The range is too long.

...

When using bow chasers, those get inaccurate soon, and I think it works ok.

Broadside long cannons just shoot really far with really good accuracy.

One little thing that has always bugged me about aiming is the maximum elevation changes if the ship rolls too much. The red aiming line moves down on the down roll and doesn't move back on the up roll.

 +1 still valid

Maybe already been posted, but cannons on the Santísima Trinidad (maybe on other ships as well, have not tested) sometimes won't damage the enemy structure at all.

Long and Medium 9 pounders, 12 pounders and even 24 pounders often hit the enemy ship's structure - after all the armor on that side is stripped - for zero damage.

Very annoying when you're trying to sink a ship, but have to wait 71 seconds for your bottom deck cannons to load, because they're the only ones that actually damage structure.

Also; This is a weird bug, and doesn't seem to affect all ships. Sometimes all cannons work as intended and do damage, other times only the 9 pounders don't do damage, and sometimes only the 42 pounders work. I don't know if this is a bug connected to different ships, the Santísima, or if its some sort of lag issue.

P.S. It's hard for me to show any evidence of this occurring, as i don't have a recording program. Can test it yourself though, by going into battle and trying to sink enemy ships using the 9 and 12 pounders exclusively.
