[Guide] Tips for new players

Recommended Posts

Prologue

I wanted to state first that this will not be a guide about the controls, each features of the games, or the different items you can get. This will be a series of tips to help out new players to Naval Action progress through the game successfully. Any veteran of the game understands that a successful start will help you significantly down the line as a player.

Ask

When you first start out do not be afraid to ask questions. If you are unable to find an answer online first or are in need of the information as quickly as possible ask in the nation or help channel of the chat. People will respond and will give you good advice. It may take them a few minutes to respond but that is more than likely them taking the time to type up a proper response to your question.

Where to Start

After creating a profile you are given a choice of two locations on where to start. Either what is your factions main open world port or a rookie capital located within the shallows. This choice is up to you since neither choice is wrong. I do recommend going and starting in the Shallows. In the shallows you are placed in a region where it is easy to get to place to place and no major threats from experienced players and their deep water ships. For someone just learning the game, the shallows is the perfect spot to learn the basics before heading off into the deeper waters.

What to do First

When you first start out the game you have your free ship and that is pretty much it. No real instruction or tutorial on what to do first. Nothing to your name and at the lowest rank only able to crew 40 men. What I found to be the best method to kill two birds with one stone is to do combat missions. Combat missions can be found at ports under the proper location of the "mission" tab at the top of the screen. In combat missions you will earn experience and help you rank up quickly through the first few ranks and be able to sail ships larger than your Cutter effectively. You will also earn a little bit of gold which will help you down the road get off your feet.

Trade Routes

Once you have earned enough money and bought/captured a trade ship it is wise to start as soon as possible a trade route. A trade route is where you take trading goods from one port and find another port that will buy them for more. It is not a mission in the game. A trade route is something you create and do on your own accord. You will have to spend money to make money when doing trade routes. This way after doing some trade routes you can save up and begin to buy ships that will hold the max crew you can provide in your rank, begin to set up multiple outposts, gather material for shipbuilding, and start to buy larger goods.

Play within your Means

This game like many other games of its genre requires a bit of work. There is no fast track to the best ships in the game. You need to work your way up. To do this you need to live within your means. What I mean by this is to not go out spending your money on every little upgrade or ship you see. Apart from earning experience to rank up your other goal is to start building up your gold and to find ways to earn a steady flow of gold as well. Spending it when you have so little on items you cannot use effectively in your current state is not financially wise. Do not go and try to sail the largest ship you can buy. Sure the cutter is a very weak ship but it is one that you can fully crew and use to its best capacity. Manning a ship beyond the size of the crew you are able to provide will not help you in the long run. Not to mention you are an easy target to opposing factions not to mention your reload and use of your sails will be worse than what they are intended to be functioning at.

Epilogue

This is hopefully the start of this set of tips. As a community I believe we do have an obligation to help out any new player we can. Especially one like Naval Action where there is many various ways on playing the game. If anyone has a tip they would like to add please just post below.
