[PvP1] June, The British Honduras Campaign, Pirate perspective

Before the story unfolds, let me welcome AUS clan from PvP2 onto PvP1. They have livened up the 10-12 considerably.

I do hope they keep the front line open at 10-12 and not fall for SLRN trickery allowing the whole west side falling back into slumbering EU times. But then again, we will gladly accept more brethren into the Pirates once that time comes. :P

Previous month we saw: http://forum.game-labs.net/index.php?/topic/14165-the-betrayal-of-the-ausez-to-the-british-empire/?p=264990

And the Honduras campaign kicked off with: http://forum.game-labs.net/index.php?/topic/14649-courtesysportsmanship-after-pbs/?p=271764

So with these notes in place, I'll now start writing up the next episode: June 14th, Battle at Croata Bay.

June 14th, Battle at Croata Bay

Preliminaries

The battle before the coast of Croata Bay actually started further west along the coast of Honduras, Truxillo. After the earlier conquest there, chances were high an encounter would be due.

A lone scout was dispatched to figure out the British plans. Would they go for Ruatan or Utila?

20160614 Croata Trux 1

As the Pirate Surprise approached Truxillo, a lone British Mercury was spotted trying to go east past Truxillo head. He was quickly chased back into port.

20160614 Croata Trux 2

Sailing away again the Mercury came out and again, making good speed with the wind in his back. The Surprise turned close to the shallows hiding behind the treeline, trying to get behind the Mercury as it sped up out of the bay.

Alas the British captain spotted the Pirate a bit too soon and again made his way back to port.

Why was that captain so eager to go east? Why did he not drag the scout into battle as obscure any Truxillo movements?

Both class of ship and movement of the Mercury gave away the British strategy. (Or was it a betrayal that did it? )

Neither Utila nor Ruatan was their target, but rather Brewers and Croata.

20160614 Croata 1

As the reports of an assault fleet heading for Brewers came in the scout came up on Black River, only to find it empty...

Racing on to Croata with the wind in its back. It was clear that Croata was the first target and the British fleet had set sail from Gracias a Dios against the wind.

And thus coming up to the Croata channel, the entire British flotilla was spotted sailing in Croata Bay.
The British fleet consisted of 20+ 6th rate ships, so the Pirate plan was easy. Bring out 5th rate interceptors and bottle them in.

The Battle

20160614 Croata 2

While waiting for the reinforcements to arrive a British scout appeared sailing a Cerberus. Neither party wanting to engage a short stalemate followed. The British were now fully aware a blockade was in the works.

Nevertheless the Cerberus sailed off before any hostilities were started.

As the conquest of Croata ended the British fleet reformed into 2 elements. The 2nd element staying back in the bay.

Meanwhile the 1st Pirate element had formed at the entrance, consisting of 3 Renommees and the scout Surprise.

Further back lay the Pirate 2nd element, while their 3rd element was still sailing in. A total of 8 5th rates.

The British commander send out his 1st element consisting of five 5th rates onto the Pirate 1st element. Orders were clear, disengage and reform. Their commander is our priority.

While the Pirate 1st was engaged, the British 2nd made a dashing attempt to break the blockade and ran into the Pirate 2nd element. British stragglers were left sailing for themselves out of the bay.

20160614 Croata 3

Pirate 3rd element came in and started to hit the stragglers. It didn't look like they had an organized 3rd element.

As the British scattered, the Pirates were waiting for 5ths and 4ths to be brought in by the British to rescue their remaining fleet.

For whatever reasons unknown this never came to pass. The British kept out sending 6ths, one-by-one out of Gracias. To be picked off by the Pirates who had now formed into duo squads to deal with as many pickings as possible.

Before the day was done, all Bonacca elements were called to stand-down. This needed no more than some free-for-all squads.

Result

It is hard to say who won at Croata. You could call it a marginal victory on the British side for capturing the port.

But they never had a chance of executing their plan to its full extend, plus lost a lot of 6ths in the process.

From a tactical perspective the Pirates dictated the battle from start to end, the British never took the chance to turn it into their favor.

Notes

On a personal note, I'll say this: they made every attempt to go for it. We could have had a Mexican stand-off at the Croata mouth for an hour. So in face of this bravery, I call it a victory for everybody. :D

June 15th, The Ruatan Ruse

Preliminaries

Again the day started at Truxillo.

Yesterdays British Cerberus had apparently docked into Truxillo. Now he put up his sails coming around the peninsula, only to find a Pirate scout in his Surprise waiting around the corner.

20160615 Ruatan 1

Giving a bit of chase towards the north, the Cerberus takes the west side of Ruatan, while the Pirate breaks off towards the harbor itself. Was Ruatan going to be the primary target?

Only moments later the report of a British fleet sailing for Brewers comes in. A repeat of the Croata Bay looked about to happen with 11 5ths locked into Brewers conquest. But this time only a small contingent of Pirates is available as three 4ths and four 5ths set course to intercept.

20160615 Ruatan 2

As the Pirate fleet gathered before Brewers, the British finish their conquest.
Some minor back and forth maneuvering ensues, including an attempt by Cutter to break the blockade.
But in reality the British are firmly locked into Brewers Bay, and thus their commander sees no other option but to have every man run for himself.

Pirates, being Pirate dive onto the pickings. However this turned out to be a ruse!

20160615 Ruatan 3

Forming at Bonacca, without a Pirate in sight the British are forming their real attack force. Nine 4th and two 5th rates come at the ready.

While sailing to reform at Truxillo, the British commander makes the astute assumption the Pirates will stick around Black River, never to leave their last man alone.

The Ruse Completes

20160615 Ruatan 4

Or should I have said, "The Moro Chico Ruse" as the British commander looked over his plans. Morro Chico would ensure no other Pirates could reinforce from out of Bonacca.

However wind was not in his favor and he opted for the riskier Ruatan instead.

With reports coming in that the Pirates had turned to Ruatan as well, eyes were cast nervously to the east, looking for either AUSFC fleet to loom up or more Pirates out of Bonacca.

Alas this was all not to be the case.

As a lone 3rd made a final attempt to get to the British commander, the British fleet scooped into harbor.

Moments later the six Pirates sped into the harbor, but timing was bad. Immediately they were set upon by British ships.

With no more reinforcements at the ready, the Pirate battle commander had to make due with what he had.

As another two British 4ths and a 5th sail from Bonacca to join at Ruatan, the fate of both Ruatan and the Pirates were sealed.

Result

Counting on the Pirates to stick to their methods allowed the British to secure Ruatan and make a serious blow to the Pirate fleet. It can safely be said to be a victory for the British.

What will be next? The plan for Morro Chico has been exposed. Or rather hop over Honduras and go for Guatemala's Placentia. That looks like an easy picking.

Tomorrow's tale might just see it all.

June 16th, Control over Bonacca

Preliminaries

The day started with the Caribbean covered in a heavy storm. As time moved on, it looked like no ships would be capable of setting sail. But as expectantly as the storm had hit, the storm lifted and captains scrambled for their ships to prepare them for sail.

Scouting elements were put to sea quickly, because the British had two potential staging points, Ruatan and Truxillo.

20160616 Bonacca 1

The small chance that the British would hit Utila was quickly shoved off the table when an Ingermanland was spotted sitting in Truxillo harbor.

What remained was spotting the British main fleet, so they could be dealt with.

A British Cutter was dispatched from Truxillo to engage the Pirate Surprise scout, potentially disrupting any sighting of movement from either Truxillo or Ruatan. But with the south wind the Cutter could not catch up and tie the Surprise into a battle. Thus he turned back to Truxillo.

Next the Ingermanland came out again to give chase to the Surprise towards Morro Chico. With no other British in sight it was a poor insignificant target, to be ignored. And when it turned it was clear that the British were not ready yet to stage the attack.

Initial Engagements

20160616 Bonacca 2

As the order came up to undock the Bonacca fleet, so must have the same order sounded on the British side.

Side-by-side Pirates and British raced out of Bonacca. To this day it will probably remain unclear who was the first one out.

With the British counting six 4ths and two 5ths versus the Pirates three 4ths and two 5ths, skirmishes erupted left and right as both sides tried to gain an advantageous engagement.

But with the Pirates getting the better position in the engagements, it meant the British were holding the waters in front of Bonacca. This left the remaining Pirate element sitting in harbor staring at their British counter-part.

As the ships disengaged without losses on either side, it was clear that the British had gained control of the waters around Bonacca. It was their move now.

The Main Engagement

20160616 Bonacca 3

While the Pirates were still unsure whether they had actually spotted the main fleet of the British or just a rear element, the British hesitated for a moment whether to move on or retreat into Bonacca.

As they moved south-west away from Bonacca their hesitation convinced the Pirates that they had indeed spotted the British main fleet.

Meanwhile the Pirates undocked a 3rd rate chase fleet in Bonacca, which consisted of four 3rds and a Constitution. This left the British with no other option, but to sail harder down the straight.

As all Pirate elements were recalled to the Ruatan straight to make an intercept, the noose around the British fleet closed. From the south-east a Pirate Constitution and Surprise appeared through the fog.

As the engagement started one Pirate 3rd had suffered too much storm damage and his rig went down before being able to engage. Another Pirate Constitution from Bonacca could not get out of the wind and thus also unable to engage.

But still it turned out to be enough to give the British a severe beating.

In that battle itself, the British soon focused on both the Surprise and Constitution. The Surprise was quickly forced to disengage, while the Constitution saw his side stripped and subsequently sunk.

The Pirate 3rds however pounded onto the British fleet and one-by-one their ships started sinking.

While the British were striking hard on one of the 3rds, the lone Ingermanland from Truxillo had already decided to abandon them to their fate.

Yet the Pirate 3rd was forced to leave, but British loses were already mounting too high.

In a desperate attempt the British Trincomalee managed to disengage and sail away to the south-west.

With the British no more capable of taking the fight to Morro Chico, everybody was called to stand down.

Result

With the initial storm it was hard for both forces to properly setup their fleets and execute their respective plans. However the Pirates adapted faster and while they lost one 4th rate, it was a serious blow to the British, losing five 4ths and one 5th. Not to mention they never got close to initiating any form of assault on Morro Chico itself.

As the weekend draws closer, we may potentially see bigger fleets and more varied action. Will other nations take this opportunity to snatch also at Honduras? Only time will tell.

June 17th, Fishing at Chinchorro

Preliminaries

As the light drizzle cleared on the early morning around Bonacca, the last element of the Pirates sailed south-west. Two fast Renommees were ordered to keep an eye on Ruatan.

The British rear element soon following with two Mercuries and two Constitutions, docking into Ruatan.

20160617 1 Bonacca

So far the British had not had much luck in their Honduras campaign and funds were running low. Supplies from Britain had still not arrived. It did mean that a full-out assault on Morro Chico would be fruitless, rather a shallow port had to be taken.

With the Pirates obviously controlling the waters to the west, Utila was not really an option. Rather the British commander checked the channel east of Ruatan for passage and opted for the further away Chinchorro instead.

The Race to Chinchorro

20160617 2 Chinc

As the British fleet, consisting of nine 6th rates, raced through the shallows, the two Pirate Renommees quickly gave chase. All Pirate elements were called to move to Chinchorro at best speed.

At Bonocca, a Pirate element fitted for port defense set sail. Any escaping back to Bonacca was now blocked by a 4th escorted with 5ths.

The Pirate main fleet, several 4ths and 5ths fitted for speed, turned north away from Utila.

One-by-one the British got picked off as they tried to reach the Chinchorro shallows. Already confused by the ongoing skirmishes the islands of Turneffe were mistakenly identified as Chinchorro and the British started turning west.

However the Pirate main fleet was quickly spotted.

In turn the Pirates detached a fast Constitution to push the British fleet further east, while their main fleet kept on sailing north fast to close the gap.

Finally the British commander found himself alone, his fleet scattered and lost at sea. The Pirate fleet quickly came over the horizon and the final net was cast onto him.

Battle of Utila

20160617 3 Utila

Meanwhile, with the Pirates out the way, the British staged a new attack on Utila from Ruatan. However not many numbers were at the ready yet, so reinforcements had to be rushed in from Bonacca.

This gave the Pirates the opportunity to also reform at Bonacca and without any available escorts on either side, both sides rushed with 6th rates to Utila.

The final tally at Utila was 7 Mercuries and 2 Navy Brigs for the British. This time around, the Pirates had the numbers and showed up with 7 Mercuries, 1 Navy Brig, 2 Rattle Snakes and 2 Mortar Brigs.

Loses were still high on the Pirate side as 1 Mercury got captured, another 3 sunk. So did one Rattle Snake and a Navy Brig. But as the sun set, the British lost their entire fleet.

Result

With the straight forward assaulting Chinchorro and Utila in order, the Pirates were easily able to deliver a devastating blow to the British. As the funds have run dry on the British side, this might just be the end of their venture forth into Honduras.

Addendum, The Trux Skirmish

20160617 3 Truxillo

Delirious on both their recent victory and the overflowing bottles of rum, the Pirate fleet set sail back to Bonacca.

Spotting an unescorted British fleet of seven 6th rates coming out of Truxillo, an equal number of Pirates broke off for engagement.

Without bothering to repair, and a Mortar Brig leading the charge, they recklessly bravely dove onto the British cannonades never to be heard of again.

Only a British fleet was seen late that night docking into Bonacca.

Now that the veil has lifted, I can continue the story. ;) I'm not entirely sure our diplos want everyone to hear it, but I really want to show how things work. :P

June 18th, Triple dealing at Turneffe

An uneasy meeting

20160618 1 Turneffe

In deep secret AUSFC diplomats had been talking to Spanish diplomats, offering them a piece of the British steak. Grilled red, with just a tiny piece of parsley as a good Aussie served steak should be.

And thus Turneffe was turned over to the Spanish, but not entirely without a hitch. Not all Pirates agreed to this turnover. As the Spanish fleet sailed onto Turneffe, the diplomatic escort fleet had to convince the incoming privateers to stay clear of AUSFC waters.

Needless to say, the Spanish were now in control of Turneffe and could now join the fray.

June 19th, Crisscross at Belize

Preliminaries

20160619 1 Belize

Again both sides had clear weather setting up their main elements and only the rear elements got some sightings.

First a Pirate rear element of three 4ths was send to the south of Ruatan with orders to scout. But as they passed Ruatana, a British element of three Ingermanlands was seen leaving Bonacca to the west. Clearly they were not planning to hit Honduras, but rather heading towards Guatemala.

The Pirate element was ordered to hold station at the south end of Fish Island, expecting the British Ingermanlands to sail towards Belize. But as time passed it became clear they had gone somewhere else and a fast interceptor was dispatched from Bonacca to investigate.

Pirate Entry in Belize

20160619 2 Belize

Expecting the British fleet to rear its head, the Pirates started their assault on Belize from Placentia. But the waters stayed quiet. With their rear element linking in, they sailed into Belize for an easy battle ahead.

British Crossover Out of Belize

20160619 3 Belize

Expecting the Pirates to be busy the British commander wanted to pursue Ambergrease Caye at all speed. For a moment there was confusion as another "Brit" brought about a Placentia assault. But Spanish already had their eyes on Placentia and quickly diverged to deal with that threat. For a moment there it looked like this was the end of the British hold on Guatemala. Luck turned back in British favor though as their commander escaped.

Although both the Pirate interceptor and a scout made it into Ambergrease Caye, the battle was looking to be an one-sided affair. Another scout from the Pirate Belize fleet was tasked to join at Ambergrease Caye.

Run up to Ambergrease Caye

20160619 4 Ambergrease

Finishing off the battle at Belize, part of the Pirates started a race to Ambergrease Caye. Others however cared more for their loot and docked up at Belize to unload their goods.

As the Pirates approached fast towards Ambergrease Caye, the British saw no other option but to bombard their own ships and sail them into the towers. Thus they won the battle of Ambergrease Caye.

Aftermath

This however did not turn aside the incoming Pirate menace and they dove onto the British ships like hawks on mice.

A fierce battle ensued between seven 4ths on either side. With ships on fire on both sides it was hard to see who gained the upper hand. As one British ship came out into harbor the fight was over, but with the smoke clearing four Pirate ships came into view. The battle was a Pirate victory after all.

Result

Instead of gaining more hold on the Guatemala coast, the British are being pushed north and are barely holding onto one port. With heavy losses on their side it can be considered a marginal victory for the Pirates.

not 7x  4th for Brits,  it was 6x 4th and i had a frigate fire-ship that i let explode but you guys managed to escape the blast :P

Capping towers was planned at Ambergrease due to low numbers, what was not really planned was me exploding and killing the entire crew of the last tower and capping it doing this right when you guys started to enter the battle :P

I started first with idea of distracting the single connie pirate that was in the battle, goal was to distract and push him away from guys capping towers and while he was running away from my frigate i was set a fire by the last tower alive not far, i just run to it, exploded and killed/capped it at the perfect timing.

Good fun , first time trying those fireships :)

I completely forgot to mention, the lone Ingermanland "British" captain had captured Utila in the mean time. But by now everybody knows the capture was entirely moot. So I'll skip that part.

June 19th, Darkness Descends over Truxillo

20160619 1 Ruatan

The lone Pirate Constitution sat in front of Ruatan with its captain watching the Spanish fleets sail in, while the British cowered in their ports.

As the battles started the lone Ingermanland from Truxillo fled away in the direction of Bonacca. Spotting the Pirate he thought there was an easy picking. He soon realized once and for all he had joined the wrong fight.

At that point Ruatan fell.

His cannons were soon silenced, his sails shot to bits, he saw no other option but to surrender himself. With all pieces coming in place around Utila, he would not be allowed Lord Protector of it.

The Constitution sailed away into the darkness, while Truxillo again changed hands without much of a fight.

Not to disappoint the fans, I'll write up the report. But as you can imagine there are little surprises in here. I'll close with my personal thoughts.

June 20th, Utila Smashdown

20160620 1 Utila

While hoping for some action the Pirates had stationed themselves around strategic points. There was little to come out into the waters. Soon the Pirates would have to become fishermen to see some action...

As the day slowly drew to a close, the plan to crush Utila was set into motion. A 4th rate fleet would set sail from Morro Chico, while a 6th rate fleet would come from Bonacca under the cover of Spanish 3rds and 4ths.

Quickly Utila was dealt with.

--

First of all I really would like to see the area turn into a good PvP spot. But a fundamental problem in the game right now is timezone handling. Hopefully we can see good action at Honduras, not just 10-12, but around the clock. If not then I'm inclined to say we turn the area back to 10-12. (And please British players, do not put a ship into a harbor that is outside of your playtime TZ. :P )

Another fundamental problem IMO is that organization of forces is frowned upon by a lot of folks in the community. The thought is still that game mechanics should beat organization, which I think is wrong. In this regard I'm with Lord Vicious and we should find ways to ensure we get good PvP on more than just ship-to-ship player-to-player.

Even with the mechanics we have right now we can make a decent story and have fun, but I do think we need to cater to the power players to "force" them into providing content. :D  http://forum.game-labs.net/index.php?/topic/14244-hegemony/

Even something as simple as nation switching can bring power players to the underdogs. http://forum.game-labs.net/index.php?/topic/14574-curing-the-black-plague-bug/

Stop thinking history, start thinking gameplay, we all are the story.

With all that said, lets see if the British can get back into Yucatan Honduras or maybe some other nation will make its appearance into Panama. Who knows?

[edit] Yucatan  what was I thinking?

The 7 v 7 after Amber was one of the most fun and even fights I have had in ages. The pirate tagger got an early slapping...caught fire...blew up a bit...limped away and using 'special' repair powers actually managed to make it back into combat...and to some extent probably decided the day...as he distracted 2 brit ships to sink him (again) while the remaining 4 pirates set about 3 brits who were pretty beaten up. Combine this with a rather spectacular but ineffective Brit Firebomb and some well co-ordinated 'picking' on ships who got isolated and it ended with a good victory for the pirates.

But it was a hectic victory and one that I think left 3 or 4 pirates at the bottom with 5 or 6 brits joining them in Daveys locker. The battle ran for almost the full timer and swayed to and fro.

The battles at Ambergrease Caye were hectic indeed. I've got some pictures which hopefully give some insight. Can't find a good picture of the harbor though, so I won't bother drawing a battle map. We should really have a form of replay function. :)

First the British used the rotten tactic of bumping a tower with a fireship: http://forum.game-labs.net/index.php?/topic/14700-fireshipsshould-they-live-on-after-explosion/?p=273828 :P

Hence the lively chat you'll see on global. Pakinsanious is making dangerous statements, bordering the tribunal rules.

"Any green on green kills are forbidden." http://forum.game-labs.net/index.php?/topic/6419-warning-friendly-kills-for-all-nations-are-not-allowed/

I think we may want a ruling on this, not to give Pakinsanious a penalty or warning, but rather to get clarification.

The stage was set to bring in 12 to 14 Pirate ships against the British. It would have been an easy victory had we managed to pull it off, instead of the grand fun battle we had. :)

But executing it proved harder. We hadn't appointed an Ambergrease battle commander, the port was lost anyways. So our Belize battle commander was in charge. While he needed to set the timer, others took that as an opportunity to unload at Belize instead of following orders and sail out immediately.

So as I got Ambergrease into view the port battle finished. Effectively ensuring the port would open the moment everybody left battle. As some British ships turned to sea, others unable to enter the port (which is a weird mechanic anyway), I raced in and started the tag. Unless there would be sufficient BR around, it would fail anyway.

Then one of you lot made the mistake of tagging me. And I called the order to let everyone but one exit from port battle as to keep the port closed and drag everybody in.

But giving a non-directive order, under time constraints of 10 seconds, with no officer to resolve it and effectively asking for a leap of faith, will yield the obvious result: nobody moved. :) (It's human nature, go read the US Army Officer's Manual.)

I probably should have retagged, so the battle would have started a couple of seconds later more out to sea. But I forgot.

So darn this silly 2 minute timer for not letting us utterly gank those Brits.

And thus we start the battle in itself. With myself right in the middle of the harbor. I made a dash south-east passing the tip of the land to get clear of the British. Meanwhile Pirates were joining further away south-east. The British were lined up downwind of myself also sailing south-east. While they could not get good shots into my port side armor, having 4 ships fire at you certainly starts to strip it away, so I had to form my plan of escape.

Luck would have it I took a fireshot, but now the fortune of having a western wind turned against me. With land on my starboard side I could not turn upwind, I made a downwind turn-around. Meanwhile I disabled survival to get some real fire going. This would ensure I would not be followed.

http://images.akamai.steamusercontent.com/ugc/267217313737306397/79C8C16390C4B50426F22F9719EEE8AE8043BD66/

Now in the downwind position my belly came up and you guys quickly stripped my remaining port side armor. I also let the fire burn a bit too high, so now I was in real trouble.

http://images.akamai.steamusercontent.com/ugc/267217313737307678/D7071F8E58C2A3B3125007EF6726728026C44E8B/

Finally I managed to get the fire under control, but I was hurt badly. Meanwhile we had no commander in this battle, so there was a bit of a shuffle as Brogsitter took command.

http://images.akamai.steamusercontent.com/ugc/267217313737309704/652A87BC4644DDCEDDE1D5F98FA64178450B6447/

Putting down my sails I contemplated leaving the battle.

http://images.akamai.steamusercontent.com/ugc/267217313737311262/269E7A44B6AAD8E7659BC1EB9467D65087597217/

But I saw Thomas was almost down on a north-east heading towards me. So I decided to make a far away downwind pass against him.

Coming out of the pass on the south end I had essentially reformed with the Pirate line. On hindsight and after analyzing the battle a bit more I should have pointed out that the British continuously had the upwind position, thus getting clear shots into the Pirate Constitution red bellies.

As Brogsitter called for another downwind turn, I did think it was impossible for me to follow. Exposing my port side belly would be the end for me for sure. The alternatives I had were, run away or tack upwind. Wasn't a hard choice to make. :P

http://images.akamai.steamusercontent.com/ugc/267217313737312345/EB8C07E2F5A12ABAF54DA790D29E2949C63F6172/

As I made my pass once more upwind of the British line, too many balls managed to penetrate and strip away the remainder of my port side armor.

And when Jeheil turned towards me, it was a simple command: "Boys, this has been a fine ship. But it is time for a new one."
