  2. Hi, i am doing research on shipbuilding in Europe in the Age of Sail. I found some pictures, which i will show below. The first one is the Woolwich Dockyard, the second one is Holmen in Denmark, the third is Rotterdam in the Netherlands and the last one is Stockholm Shipyard You can see the difference in how the ships are build. The difference in how the shipyard looks especially came too my attention. It looks as if the English and Danish made use of some sort of drydock to build their ships, in contrast to the Dutch and Swedes. Can someone explain why some ships are build in some sort of drydock and others are just build on a flat plane near the water? I also noted that the Dutch and Swedes build their ships with the bow towards the water and the English and Danes build their ships with the stern towards the water, why is that? I hope some of you can help me with this and maybe explain the difference in shipbuilding throughout Europe.
  3. I'll start off with some of the classics.

    Age of Sail readers

Because there doesn't seem to be anything here yet, I thought I would throw in a reccomendation for reading resources that would help anyone trying to create a period accurate and realistic game for this time period.... or Models....or just anyone plum interested in this sort of thing. The two books I have used to help expand my knowledge of the age of sail over the years are not the easiest to find but amazing resources. These titles are "Seamanship in the Age of Sail: An Account of the Shiphandling of the Sailing Man-Of-War 1600-1860" by John Harland. This covers in detail how ships were rigged and handled, as well as specific maneauvers and how they were done. Great resource. The second resource I use is the book "Arming and Fitting of English Ships of War: 1600-1815" by Brian Lavery. This includes information on deck layout, ships boats, the different kinds of guns and how they were used, ect. Great for more than just the English Royal Navy, too. There are many other great titles and resources I have not used but have an interest in, and I hope that this small token may be of use to everyone in the potential development of this and future projects! Yours Faithfully, Capt. Roan Alexander, R.N.
  5. The purpose of this thread is simply to list all know problems a Captain may have had to deal with during the age of sail. It could be privateer Captain, Pirate Captain etc. Since The age of sail isn't my forte my examples are rather basic but; Mutinee, Supply shortages, Colds perhaps and so on. I would like you guys to be as specific as you want from heavy wind to Hurricane George (if they named them back them). The idea is to create a realistic list that we might approach and then alter later on as we see fit for playability. For example, Captains may have to worry about like wood rot as somebody could post here but later on when we are compiling what we want from this list, we could take that out or leave it in if voted for. I know that there are general suggestion threads and this is not a suggestion thread yet but I would like to use the information presented here to create a more specific suggestion thread for what people might want in concerns of what they would have to deal with while sailing. If this thread is in the wrong area or is innappropriate for some reason feel free to move/delete but again it is not a suggestion thread but meant to be used for historical understanding of what captains had to deal with.
