  1. Thanks for the link. I seen Of War and Generals movie before, it has portrayal of the Fredericksburg battle. When I watched it I thought it was an exaggeration. It is incredible that men could actually attack in such situation. If Wiki is correct neither Burnside nor his commander of the first grand division actually taken look at the field were they ordered attack. That sounds like gross incompetence. Hooker did and tried to convince Burnside not to continue. I also wonder what about actual Brigadiers who were in charge. Were they not able to send word up? or were they not listened to? Perhaps this is a modern view, that probably comes from Moltke and his thinking that tight control of the army was impossible and officers need to have freedom to act on the intention of the commander as applicable. I guess I am curious if the same sort of thing applied to Gettysburg. At what level did commanders actually rode around and looked at the terrain enemy disposition etc. Do you have any books to recommend? Also sure if you have a good list of museums I would love to have it for the future. I would definitely be interested in anything outside (so Gettysburg park is on the list) also any museums that have good collections of the weapons from the period, muskets, pistols, sabers etc. I also wonder if there are any resources or places were you can walk/hike the length of one of forced marches(something leading to Gettysburg perhaps)? I would love to load a pack and walk it an then endup on the field.
  2. UGG got me interested in the US Civil war. So over last few days I been watching bunch of video on youtube looking at the terrain from both points of view. Something struck me is that some of the attacks undertaken by the South seem suicide level. Night attack on Cemetery Ridge being probably best candidate. Walk through enfilading, fire of batteries up hill, through multiple barriers and crappy ground. Without any artillery support. Charge of the light brigade seems like an awesome idea in comparison. Picket's charge similar sort of thing on larger scale. So my question is am I reading it wrong? Because if I was looking up the cemetery hill seeing Union batteries ranging whole place up. As a brigade commander. Would I not send word up: This is a terrible idea, lets try something else? I also wonder did Lee ride around himself to survey the ground or did he rely purely on the scout reports? From what I understood atleast at the Round top he relied on a scout purely? From what I also understood is that South still had about 2 cavalry brigades with the army, I did not hear anything about what they did during the battle? With move to flank Union left, from early morning till actual troops arrived with such a long period of time there was absolutely no scouts in the area at all? Just looking at the field it seem like distances are really not that long for sending a few guys on horses to hide in the bushes and keep an eye on things. In general it absolutely amazing that US preserved this site so well. If I am in the country and get a chance I definitely will visit some time.
  3. Few thoughts. Stay away from making it into a Total War game. What works amazingly in UGG is tactical combat and AI. Building and balancing large scale game would mess with that in a big way. Need battles with a lot of What if, where location is well known and is well documented. 1. Austerlitz 2. Borodino 3. Collection of battles from Indian Mutiny 4. Crimean War and different episodes of siege of Sevastopol
  4. As a noob maybe I will offer some feedback that might be useful for the devs. 1. Scenario system is ok, it is fun to replay and works mostly, I think some intermediary text of graphics to explain what is going in transition would help 2. Problem is the end conditions of each scenario. On multiple occasion I managed to basically envelop Union troops completely, with broken morale and running with my artillery pouring fire into them from elevated ground and them having nowhere to run.. boom scenario ends and they teleport to a new location Perhaps this can be dealt with by recognizing situations were withdrawal is needed and having AI play to objective? In general I think UGG is an awesome tactical game, if anything I think maybe Gettysburg is a bit too big for it? Why not just focus on multiple smaller battles with less troops and shorter time frames?
  5. Thanks a lot awesome guide. Seems like I can beat the easier AI now relatively ok, beat Opportunist with not much issue in the same way and the losses were more lopsided in my favour about 19k vs 28k. I guess this is normal for the period even when you win losses are massive. I don't really know much about US Civil War except just basics. One of my issues before was that I was not watching Morale close enough, falling back really helps a lot. Before I would let many brigades break and only then replace then with what I had in reserve. Also charging once enemy unit starts blinking is an awesome tip
  6. First I want to say an amazing game. I always loved total war games, but this is so much better then any TW. I been playing for couple days and finally managed to win 1 game vs Cautious AI as Confederate(strategic win, I assume there is another type of win where you destroy Union completely?). I also had to do it in the first day. Couple games I tried that went longer my losses just became overwhelming and I could not crush the Union on the last day no matter what. I was wondering if there is a good guide that could help me improve? Biggest issues I have are Artillery positioning. It seems to be the thing that if you can get right wins a battle. Also how to minimize casualties. Brigades from the first day seem to get completely bled dry by the end and become almost useless and this is vs the weakest AI. To get a better win do you need to completely encircle Union and destroy most of the brigades? Thanks!
