Farquharson, largest, most well armed and very fast merchant ship 3D model

Recommended Posts

She's a pretty ship, sleek and modern despite her size.  Great work in constructing her Ragnar!

My only fear is that this ship will be the one and only preferred merchant ship in the game.  With such a large hold, speed and cannons, why bother having a navy or escorts?

I mean, yes she was built in 1820, but just like my example about the USS Demologos, just because she's in the time period does not mean that she fits into the game.

To take a page out of PotBS:  the Leviathan had the most cargo space, but she was an absolute tub to sail.  The Couronne was able to carry a sizeable cargo, was a tub, but defended herself well with a formidable armament.  The Khan had a medium cargo load, but doubled as a pvp ship.  Lastly, sacrificing cargo space for speed, and the merchant vessel of choice for a few societies, the San Mateo Trader. et cetera et cetera (there were a few others I left out).

Basically what I'm getting at is there will be a shortcoming for the Farquharson should it ever be implemented.  As ragnar said, all it will take is a more maneuverable vessel on her six, and you might as well strike your colors.  Or you could do merchant convoys if you're in a guild.  Nothing like an escort to deter an opportunity seeking sea devil.

She will also take a considerable time to accelerate and may loose more speed in a turn than any other ship we have ingame.

These are all factors which can balance such a ship.

Low crew means that a few men short is already a big percentuage malus.

56 guns but only 300 men. 200+ is a good ammount of ppl fighting in a ship of the line's gundeck (200 per deck). Translate that to the farquharson and you will soon spot the problem.

A huge rigging needs alot of crew as well.

If I had to sail her I might consider arming her en flûte. Keeping some guns on the weather deck and getting additional cargospace.

After all, such ships are not meant to fight.

There will always be advantages and disadvantages to trade ships of different builds. As fast and well armed as a vessel is, the crews were rarely as well trained as naval gunners, so if I were hauling something past Mortimer Town I'd rather it be in a speed-rigged lynx that can definitely outpace my hunters instead of a moderately armed vessel that can maybe outgun them. We'll find out for sure how it fits into things when we see it in-game, but we'll likely not have to worry about it being supreme in all characteristics.

I'm curious, people have suggested and wanted hundreds of ships and only around 2-3 have been implemented, what is taking soo long? over a year ago when we didn't have open world we pretty much have the same ships as we do now.

Modeling ships take a long time, if im not wrong the devs quoted something like 2-3 months for a single ship model to be completed, then you need to implement it into the game and test for bugs. Before then releasing it to the public for even further testing.

I personally would rather have months go into stress testing these ships to ensure that they're as perfect as they can be for such a high-detail game than a large quantity of mass produced ships that may lack in quality. We'll have out many varieties of vessels sooner or later.

we are not as incompetent as some AAA studios so newships takes far less than multiply months.

i could name 5-7 ships fcompared to sea trails. Ships were not a main focus, mechanics are more important. we will be pressing around 15 ships out this year

Indeed but not all of chapmans plans are of Swedish vessels... he toured Europe collecting ship designs :)

Well one of his task actually, they wanted to know how other nations built their ships so collecting other ship designs is perfect ;)

Also on the planning and drawing of the Göta Kanal (Gota Canal, the canal which goes right thru Sweden) they went over to Russa and measured their ships and made sure their ships would never fit.

Also beautiful model of Farquharson :D Also nice to see a model of one of Chapmans tradeships too :D

ragnar is it possible to do a converted to warship version with the lower deck added? would be an nice 90 gun 3 decker

Sorry mr mirones but i do think this would be an unsatisfactory answer! would it not be better to build a 3 deck 90... I believe that such a thing as trying to convert a merchant ship to look or act like a 2nd rate would spoil the look and feel of the game far better to build something like this to my mind
