24-gun, Mars, 1781   (1781 Orestes)

Very interesting ship with an interesting history.  Along with sister ship Hercules, her captor described her "perfectly new, and alike; sail as fast as the Artois, and are the completest privateers I ever saw."

I think she must go to suggestion thread. :)

I recently found a site that would help with researching ships.  It says when a ship was in service, what admiralty it belongs to, its fate (when possible, this category mentions the number of crew), guns, and dimensions.

Note:  To get to the information, select the ship classification at the top of the page.

I have been on that site, it msot definetly a good one.

The main sources that site uses are the same ones that http://threedecks.org/uses.

If you are not familiar with threedeck, it's basicly mbnet, only for all nearly western nations.

46-gun, Delft, 1731

Note:  When double checking this ship, I came across a discrepancy.  Sites that had statistics for a Delft built around 1730 listed it with 56-guns; however, I only counted 46 gun ports (not including chasers) in the plan.

I've got a problem with the above ship. I just can't believe that it was built in 1667, except it had experienced a massive rebuild sometime during the 18th century. Clearly, the lines and design of this ship are everything but 1667 nor are they, in my opinion, as late as 1782. To me, this ship looks as if it were built in the 1st half to mid-18th century (1760s or 1770s at the latest...). Could you check that again, please?

Here another Dutch ship-of-the-line for the collection. The Stadt en Lande, 74 guns, built 1781-1782 at Harlingen. The plan is dated 1790 (from L. Kamminga, Schepen van de Friese Admiraliteit, 1973, inset p.56; the size of the inset required two scans, sorry about that):

Can be seen here as well:

Correct.

Right discription, just the wrong image attached to it.

Steel, researching a ship and wondering if there is any visual information on her:

Dutch 44-gun razee frigate Mars. She was laid down as 64-68 Zevenvolden in 1783, but renamed Mars and completed as a razee in 1795. She was present in the line of battle at Camperdown, captured, and became floating battery HMS Vleiter.

Dutch armament:

Upperdeck - 26x Dutch 30 pdr (equivalent to British 32 pdr)

QD/FC - 18x Dutch 18 pdr
