'Prince de Neufchatel' American Schooner (With Plans)

Recommended Posts

The prettiest ship you would ever see.  The Pickle on steriods.  Smooth lines, unique sail plan, sharp bite.  This is the ultimate privateer ship.

The Victory might be a sledgehammer, the Constitution a Bowie Knife, this here is a surgeon's scalpel.

Yes, it lost in the player selected ship poll for 2015, but this would be a very good addition to the game.  It carries a hermaphrodite rig similar (yet very different from) the Pickle and is heavily armed (18 guns) and manned (130 crew).  It is extremely fast.  At the least make it a premium ship if you don't want it to be a regular ship.  I and others would pay good RL money for her.

Funny, I was just about to make this topic myself. Lynx on steroids. Count them gunports (although privateers like this almost never armed them all)!

Besides her great fame and reputation, this would be a good ship for balance. Capable of evading the enemy like Lynx, but fighting like Mercury.

A shame she didn't do better in the vote, but devs seemed to show interest.

Yeah, I think the desire to get some more big ships in the game dominated that vote. Once we get the ones already being made in the game I'm thinking ships like this would do better in a vote.

Not a ship at all.

  1. boat can have oars, paddles, sails, or a motor to make it move. A ship is boat that can travel across deep water, such as a sea or ocean. A ship is built to carry people or goods for a long distance. A ship is propelled by sail or power only.

A ship is a three (or more) masted square rigged vessel.

A brig has two masts, a snow two and a third try-sail mast immediately adjacent to the mizzen, from which the gaffed spanker is flown.

This is a schooner, a two masted vessel, similar to a brig, but with only fore and aft sails on the mizzen (with a square mizzen t'gallant). (Hermaphrodite or Schooner Brig).

Barques are three (or more) masted with a fore and aft rig (schooner rig) on the aft mast, and Barquentines on the aft masts.

Cool, but who cares in the context of this thread?  Has nothing to do with the proposal to have it in game.

This is the Age of Sail. Back then the words ship and boat actually had real definitions.

Only square-rigged vessels with three masts are ships. Or rather, they are rigged as ships. In naval parlance, sometimes only ships-of-the-line are considered ships.

The real Dr. Maturin would have something to say about your pedantry. :)

Now more pictures.

"Built at New York in 1813 by the prominent New York ship builders, Adam and Noah Brown, the Prince de Neufchatel was one of the fastest and most successful American privateers of the War of 1812. A large two-masted schooner, she was 111 feet long, 25 feet wide, and carried 18 guns. Owned by an American woman, Madame Flory Charreton, Prince de Neufchatel set sail for France soon after completion under Captain J. Ordronaux to prey on British shipping.

She captured a number of prizes during 1814 and outran pursuit by 17 British warships at various times. On returning to American waters, Prince De Neufchatel was chased by the British frigate Endymion. With both ships stopped by a lack of wind, the British attacked with five boats holding 110 men. Despite fierce defense, the British succeeded in boarding and were driving back the Americans when Captain Ordronaux seized a lighted match and threatened to blowup the ship if his men retreated further. The outnumbered crew responded by killing or wounding most of the attackers, and she escaped once again. In honor of his heroism during this fight, the Navy named a WWII destroyer after Captain Ordronaux. During a second cruise to British waters, she was damaged in a gale and had to surrender to a British frigate squadron. Impressed by her sailing qualities, the British made a copy of her plans and built a replica for the British navy."
