  1. The US Brig Eagle fought in the War of 1812 on Lake Champlain (The Battle of Plattsburg Bay). The Eagle was built at Vergennes, Vermont between July 23rd and August 11th of 1814 by shipwright Adam Brown. An amazing feat in itself when you consider it generally took many months to build a ship of this size and the shipbuilders who built this ship did it in only 19 days. But time was of the essence. Finished in bare time to participate in the decisive Battle of Lake Champlain on 11 September 1814, Eaglerendered service. The first vessel in the American line, she fought HMS Chub, HMS Linnet, and HMS Confiancealongside the USS Saratoga. During the course of the battle she was holed 39 times and had 13 men killed and 20 wounded. After the battle she was laid up for preservation at Whitehall, New York, but was sold in 1825. 2. USS Syren (later Siren) was a brig of the United States Navy during the First Barbary War and the War of 1812 until being captured by the Royal Navy in 1814. Syren was built for the Navy in 1803 at Philadelphia by shipwright Nathaniel Hutton and launched on 6 August 1803. She was commissioned in September and Lieutenant Charles Stewart was appointed in command. Type: Brig Displacement: 240 long tons (244 t) Length: 94 ft 4 in (28.75 m) Beam: 27 ft 9 in (8.46 m) Draft: 12 ft 6 in (3.81 m) Propulsion: Sail Complement: 120 officers and enlisted Armament: 16 × 24-pounder carronades Plans: Other Pictures: Sources: http://parus.ucoz.lv/forum/7-142-1 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Syren_(1803) http://www.shipmodel.com/models/syren-full-hull---expose http://www.segelschiffsmodellbau.com/t2535f723-USS-Syren-Kitbash-for-the-win-4.html here you can find much more detailed pictures especially of small Details page 1-8 !! 3. USS Spark Complement: 90 Armament: Two long 18-pounder guns Ten 18-pounder carronades USS Spark (1813) was a heavily armed brig in the services of the United States Navy, built for service in the War of 1812. However, she was completed too late for that war and was assigned, instead, to the Barbary Wars in the Mediterranean. After two voyages in support of that action, she was assigned to suppress pirates in the Caribbean, where she was successful in capturing a number of pirate ships and their crews. The first ship to be so named by the Navy, Spark -- a privateer built in 1813 at Sag Harbor, Long Island, New York -- was purchased by the Navy at Baltimore, Maryland, in 1814 for service in the war with England. However, the war ended before the brig could get to sea for active service against the Royal Navy. Spark, commanded by Lt. Thomas Gamble, departed New York City on 20 May 1815 and sailed for the Mediterranean for operations in Commodore Stephen Decatur's squadron against pirates of Algiers. She reached Gibraltar on 15 June and, two days later, helped in operations resulting in the capture of the Algerian flagship, Mashuda, near Cape de Gatt. On the 19th, she aided Epervier, Torch, and Spitfire in running Estedio ashore where she was boarded and captured. After cruising in the Mediterranean through the summer, Spark sailed for home on 6 October in a squadron commanded by Commodore William Bainbridge and reached Newport, Rhode Island, on 15 November and was laid up for repairs. In the autumn of 1821, Spark, now commanded by Lt. John H. Elton, departed Boston, Massachusetts, for the Caribbean for operations against pirates. In January 1822, he captured a Dutch sloop and brought her and seven pirates to Charleston, South Carolina, for trial. She returned to the Caribbean and spent over three years suppressing buccaneers. The brig returned home in 1825 and was sold at New York City in 1826.
  4. HMS Archer, and the Archer-class of gun-brigs From 1793 to 1813, the Royal Navy demanded large numbers of small armed brigs for coastal warfare. These were smaller than the brig-sloops or man-of-war brigs, with a complement of 50 men under the command of a Lieutenant. Some were converted from merchant ships, while most were built to order - the most common design of these gun-brigs was the Archer-class by William Rule, consisting of 58 ships. These ships were workhorses, most with individually undistinguished careers or a supporting role apart from some colourful exceptions; HMS Staunch, for instance, was decorated for its efforts in the 1810 Mauritius campaign, while HMS Manly was captured and recaptured twice, spending half of its life in the Dutch and Danish navies, making the ship itself something of a battleground. It is worth noting that these ships were built at a great rate - the first 10 Archer-class ships were ordered on the 30th of December, 1800, and the last of that batch, HMS Constant, was launched on the 28th of April, 1801 and completed fitting out on the 10th of June that year. Also worth noting is that arming these tiny brigs to the teeth gave them a marked tendency to roll. Measurements Length at gundeck: 80' (24 m) Length at keel: 65' 10.25" (20.072m) Beam: 22' 6" (6.86m) Depth of hold: 9' 5" (2.87m) Tonnage (by burthen, not displacement): 177 31/94; 177.3298 tonnes burthen Armament: Broadsides: 10x18-pounder carronades Bow chasers: 2x18-pounder carronades (from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_gun-brigs_of_the_Royal_Navy#Archer_class_.281801_batch.29) What could she be in game? A low-level ship that doesn't handle like a the others, a square-rigged ship with both broadside guns and bow chasers for people who want to jump in the deep end early. For more experienced players, she would still be an ideal interdictor for the smallest trade ships, and the combination of an in-game 7th-rate's turn speed and bow chasers could make her a potent shallow-water warship in its own right.
  5. The Brig The Brig is a two masted square-rigged vessel modeled after the Fair American. As far as the smaller vessels go, she is one of the largest in actual size, being quite larger than the snow and privateer, and being smaller than the Mercury, and barely so. She is rather wide as well as long, making her somewhat unwieldy and causing maneuvering to a bit more tricky than her smaller sisters. She does, however, carry a respectable complement of guns: 16 6-lb cannon ( or 12-lb carronades) as her main armament, making it a +4 gun increase from the Privateer/Cutter/Pickle, as well as 2 additional stern-chasers. As a brig she naturally has a shallow draft and sits rather low in the water, presenting a challenging target to hit from ling distances. However, her decks- and therefore her crew- are very much exposed, leaving them vulnerable to anti-personnel shot. Otherwise, the Brig serves as a general purpose vessel, and a decent upgrade from her smaller Fore-and-Aft predecessors. Her most notable feature is her square-rig setup, the Brig being the first vessel of this sort available to players. As such, the brig will serve as the training vessel upon which players can learn the "Manual Sails" mechanic for almost all future vessels. The brig will be the teacher for vital maneuvers which rely on manual sails. Her square rig means she sails best with the bind, most notably at 45° from the wind's direction (Broad reach). All-in-all, the Brig is a superb stepping stone to the mores specialized vessels like the Snow or Navy Brig and Mercury. Navy Brig The Navy variant of the Brig adds additional guns to her broadside (18 in total) and improves her planking dramatically. The Navy Brig can take impressive amounts of damage and still performing. A Live-Oak Naval Brig will prove to be an impressive and daunting foe to even larger vessels. She also carries a few more crew than the standard Brig, meaning she is ready to fend off boarders and is capable of leading boarding actions herself. In shallow-water engagements and Port Battles, the Navy Brig is a superb vessel to have amongst either an attacking or defending fleet. Both the Brig and Navy Brig serve valuable purposes as impressive vessels for their size as well as introducing the player to the square-rigged system. 6. The idea: We need more small ships to help the new player experience. These ships are a lot smaller than everything else, and so hopefully several could be made without taking up a bunch of time. Feel free to add more ship plans My idea is this. We get more small vessels: luggers, ketches, hoys, etc, 2-6 or so guns. The new player starts out as a Midshipman captaining one of these (maybe the hoy). This is in a tutorial screen where the player is taught the controls and basics of how to sail the ship. After this, the player, who is on coastal patrol, gets attacked by pirates or comes across a smuggler, who is also in one of these small ships, and the player is then taught the basics of combat and boarding. The player wins, gets sent to Port, and the tutorial explains the port screen. The admiralty then gives the new player an 8 gun ketch or lugger. The new player now has a larger and better ship, a step up in the world and a sense of progress. From there the admiralty charges the new player to leave port and hunt down smugglers that are in the area around the starting location in large numbers (1-2 ships per fleet at max). The player hunts these down, gets xp, gold, sends the ships back to port or to the admiralty, and gets money and xp and admiralty points built up. On promotion to Ensign, the admiralty recommends the player broaden their experience. 66ft (Dutch???) Hoy Dutch hoys were 2 masted (as opposed to British hoys which were usually single-masted). The British bought 19 66ft 4 gun (3 carronades + 1 24lber) hoys from the Dutch in the 1790s that were involved in some battles. Hayling (1760) British Single-masted hoy Eclair (1795) British 3 gun Lugger Le Coureur 8 gun Lugger. Cherokee (1774) 6 Gun Ketch Fly (1752) 8 gun ketch. Green ink is modifications that were added to make it ship rigged. Shark (1732) 8 gun ketch
  7. La Grace Her construction is based on the plans which were published in Architectura navalis mercatoria from 1768 by a Sweedish admiral Fredrik Henrik af Chapman. He was probably the greatest ship constructor of all times who laid foundation to modern ship construction based on accurate building plans. Long before Ford he established a „flow production“ from prearranged parts and thanks to this idea he cut down the construction time 10x. Many war and trade ships were constructed by his plans. And on his plans are based all modern replicas of historical sailing ships from 15 to 18 century. La Grace was also renowned for her corsair activities. Especially well-known is her victory over two Spanish barques carrying sugar, tobacco and wine near the coast of Guatemala. Technical description Length of hull 23,8 m Max. length inkl. jib boom 32,3 m Width 6,06m Draught 2,8 m Displacement 125 t Sail area 364 m2 High of masts 25 m Crew 37 Plans:

  9. Surprise new vessel announcement! The extreme clipper-built brig USS Niagara will be added to Naval Action. Niagara served as flagship for the United States' other War of 1812 triumph, the Battle of Lake Erie. If you've seen this video, you can see why USS Lawrence started the battle as flagship, but Niagara ended it. A century later, her remains were raised from the lakebed, and some of her timbers incorporated in the sail training vessel that operates out of Erie, PA. Her very low, sharp hull and towering rig make her a sort of Lynx with square rig, and Niagara ought to be one of the game's fastest vessels. The brig's very shallow draft made her comparatively leewardly, however, so we might expect to see her speed drop off sharply any closer than 80 degrees to the wind. Perhaps the most exciting thing about this announcement is that a certain 'shipbuilder Andrew' has been credited. I am speculating, but could he be the first to provide usermade content to the game?

  11. While scanning ship plans for my other thread, I came across a pair of smaller "tribute" ships, a schooner and a brig, that were built for the Dey of Algiers* by the Americans. The prize I've been looking for, the frigate Crescent (1797)**, was not in the book, and only text measurements seem to be available for her. The other two ships, are presented below: Tribute ship Skjoldebrand (1798) Tribute Ship Hassan Bashaw (1797/8) *Further reading: Definition of Dey **Not to be confused with any Royal Navy ships bearing the name HMS Crescent.

  14. HMS Sophie (real-life HMS Speedy) Jack Aubrey's first command, described in Master and Commander is the brig-rigged "sloop" HMS Sophie, operating out of Port Mahon in the western Mediterranean. Towards the end of the novel, the first book in the series, Sophie is captured on the Spanish coast by a French squadron led by Admiral Linois. Although the activities of the Sophie and her dimensions and armament were modeled closely on those of real-life HMS Speedy, commanded by Thomas, Lord Cochrane, the quarterdeck - unusual for a small sloop - was taken from HMS Vincejo, captured from the Spanish navy in 1799. Indeed, In the novel the Sophie is pointed out by one naval officer as being the former "Vencejo" - an alternative spelling - although in fact the Vincejo kept its original name while serving in the Royal Navy until captured by the French at Quiberon Bay in 1804. The Speedy, like the fictional Sophie, was captured in 1801 by Linois. http://www.ctbasses.com/misc/BruceTrinque/index.html#Sophie. The data below are for HMS Speedy Launched Length Keel Breadth Hold Tonnage Crew 1782 78' 3" 59' 25' 9" 10'10" 208 8/94 90 Armament: Fourteen 4-pound long guns and twelve swivels. 15. The HMS Beagle was a Cherokee-Class 10-gun brig-sloop that served with the Royal Navy. The Beagle was later adapted as a survey barque and conducted three expeditions. Her second expedition made her one of the most famous ships in history as she carried a young Charles Darwin, who later penned the Origin of Species. I think she would make a great ship for use of explorers to survey coastlines, and send expeditions to unknown lands. Class and type: Cherokee class brig-sloop Tons burthen: 235 bm Length: 90.3 ft (27.5 m) Beam: 24.5 ft (7.5 m) Draught: 12.5 ft (3.8 m) Sail Plan: Brig (Barque from 1825) Complement: 120 as a ship-of-war, 65 plus 9 supernumeraries on second voyage Armament: 10 guns, reduced to 6 guns on first survey voyage, 7 guns on second survey voyage HMS Beagle 1:1 Replica hull
  16. A very interesting Vessel with an Unusual name. HMS Black Joke Class and type: Baltimore clipper Tons burthen: Approx. 260 ton (bm) Length: 90 ft 10 in (27.69 m)[1] Beam: 26 ft 7 in (8.10 m)[1] Sail plan: Brig Complement: 34 sailors & 5 marines Armament: One 18-pounder cannonpivot-mounted Vengador – 45 men and 8 guns (645 slaves freed) Carolina – 2 guns (420 slaves freed) Dos Amigos – 34 men, 1 gun (567 slaves freed) El Almirante – 80 men and 14 guns (466 slaves freed) HMS Black Joke chased the El Almirante for over 31 hours before capturing her. She was built in 1824 in Baltimore. She was armed with............................ONE 18 Pdr Long canon on a novel swivel mount. She captured more Slaves that the WHOLE of the anti Slaver Fleet did combined! She also took on the Pirate Vessel Presidente,Black Joke was massivley outgunned and after 2 hours of continuous action Presidente Struck her Colours. Her crew were conveyed to Great Britain to face Charges of "Piracy on the High Seas" By all accounts her Captain Lt William Turner(yes i know.......POTC!!) was something of a master Mariner and well up on his Combat Skills, She was eventually burnt as her timbers were now rotten and Their Lordships deemed that"She is not,In Our Opinion,a Vessel Calculated Fit for HM Service" The Surgeon aboard HMS Dryad commented that".....She has done more towards putting an end to the vile traffic of Slaves than all of the Ships of the Station combined"

  18. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lady_Washington So the Above was a Real sailing brig back in the day and the replica has stood in for loads of TV and Film ships, primarily the Colour scheme as a variation for the brig in terms of customisation, (So we don't all look exactly the same) http://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/memoryalpha/images/5/51/Enterprise,_sailing_brig,_Generations.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20110427203511&path-prefix=en https://d38ls2kcjnhfdj.cloudfront.net/5063c67b-7cd6-45b1-a9a6-f3443d04ef50_d.jpg
