  2. Hi I'd like to request a ship that I a have fallen in love with since I saw her, she's an absolutely wonderful vessel and would be a joy to have in game. here she is, the name is Sirene according to the Royal Museum. The design of the figurehead would suggest a name such as ‘Nereide’ or ‘Sirene’, both of which are to be found among the frigates of this class in the first half of the 19th century. The former was, however, not launched until 1836, whereas the fleur-de-lys in the stern decoration is not possible after 1830. However, the mirror on the stern counter is more appropriate for the ‘Sirene’, which was built at Toulon in 1823. Measuring 171 feet along the waterline and a beam of 45 feet, she was the French flagship at the battle of Navarino in 1827. She later served as a troopship in the Russian war of 1854-55 and was eventually removed from the Royal Navy active list in 1861. here she is, what a beauty. I would love to see her in game.

  7. 'Independence' USS Independence was a wooden-hulled, three-masted ship, originally a ship of the line and the first to be commissioned by the United States Navy. Originally a 90-gun ship, in 1836 she was cut down by one deck and re-rated as a 54-gun frigate. Launched on 22 June 1814 in the Boston Navy Yard, she immediately took on guns and was stationed with frigate USS Constitution to protect the approaches to Boston Harbor. Independence remained in ordinary at Boston until 1836 when she was razeed (cut down to one covered fighting deck with poop and forecastle). She was rated down to 54 guns as her configuration gave way to that of a very large frigate. She proved to be one of the fastest and most powerful "frigates" of the Navy. Original armament - 90 × 32-pounder (15 kg) guns Possible Frigate armament - 54 × 32-pounder (15 kg) guns Do you think we need this ship as 54-gun Heavy Frigate? Discuss and post plans or more info. I would pay coin to see her in NA who will take over Constitution. 90 Guns Cut down to 54 Frigate Possible look
  8. 'Dryade' Dryade was an 38-gun Hébé-class frigate of the French Navy. In December 1787, Vénus formed a frigate division under Guy Pierre de Kersaint, along with Méduse, and sailed to Cochinchina to ferry Pigneau de Behaine, Ambassador of France. In 1794, Dryade was at Brest under Ensign Meynene. The next year, under Lieutenant Lafargue, she cruised off Bretagne. From 1796, she was used as a hulk in Brest harbour, and was eventually scrapped in 1801. A model of Dryade is on display at the Abbey of Saint-Remi. 10. Does anybody know the real ship the Frigate/Pirate Frigate is based on? The name "Cherubim" on the counter is in cyrillic, but there was no Russian Frigate by that name - at least not according to the book "Russian Warships in the Age of Sail". I find that a little curious. By the general outfit, she looks British, although the steering wheel is behind the mizzen mast. Are her plans available anywhere?
  11. Currently, the entire collection of in-game fifth-rates are true sailing frigates - long, low ships with most of their armament concentrated in a single gun deck. The Renomee seen in game is one of the earliest examples of this type of ship; for the first half of the 1670-1830 time frame the typical fifth-rate or equivalent ship was a compact two-decker, shorter and more upright than later frigates. These ships tended to have 22 guns or fewer on each gun deck and minimal armament on the upper works of the ship, and were given a range of contemporary labels as broad as just 'ship' to the more descriptive French labels like fregate a deux batteries or frigate-vaisseux de premiere ordre. As an example of the type - HMS Rainbow. HMS Rainbow was built after Renomee and her capture; by the time she was launched, she was unfashionable and obsolescent. Rainbow had a perfectly respectable career and for whichever reason was kept in service while the other ships of the 1745 Establishment group of 44-gun ships was broken up or sold out of service; after HMS Crown was broken up in 1770, Rainbow was the last of her class. Small two-deckers like Rainbow were much cheaper to keep on station than powerful ships of the line and would be more powerful than single-deck frigates for a little while longer, so Rainbow was kept occupied and there was even a small resurgence in two-decker fifth-rates with new ships of the Roebuck-class and HMS Serapis being ordered. In one of the larger naval battles of the American War of Independence, Rainbow and HMS Flora with the brig HMS Victor encountered two frigates of the Continental Navy, Boston and Hancock and the captured British frigate Fox - the elderly two-decker was able to pursue the two American ships and then the Hancock when they separated for thirty-nine hours, eventually coming up on Hancock and trading broadsides until the American ship surrendered. In 1782, Rainbow was chosen as the platform for an experimental armament of carronades, which had previously been sold to merchant ships and privateers and not found favour with naval authorities. Thoroughly obsolete by design and thirty-five years old, Rainbow encountered L'Hebe, recently-launched and the first of her class, in the English Channel. L'Hebe's captain became alarmed when he realised the shot fired from Rainbow's bow chasers were 32-pounder balls, reckoning that Rainbow was a disguised ship of the line. On Rainbow's first broadside, a 68-pound cannonball from her main battery carried away Hebe's foremast while another destroyed the helm; Hebe's captain ordered one broadside fired so as not to disgrace the flag before surrendering. Hebe had an extended career in British service, and the state-of-the-art ship was the basis of the Leda-class frigates of which the in-game Trincomalee is an example. Carronades became a typical part of the armament on the Royal Navy's ships after Rainbow's duel, though all-carronade armaments were only used on marginal ships that would not have had adequate armament otherwise. Rainbow herself was placed in ordinary in 1784 and eventually sold out of service in 1802. Her armament varied over her career between 44 and 48 guns. Her original rating reflected an armament of 20x18 pounders, 20x9pounders, and 4x6 pounders on her quarterdeck. Following repairs and recommissioning in 1762 her armament was 20x18 pounders, 22x9 pounders, and 2x6 pounders on her forecastle. When she was armed with carronades she carried 20x68 pounders, 22x42 pounders, and 6x32 pounders with both the forecastle and quarterdeck armed. Records of both the Hancock and Hebe incidents refer to her firing bow chasers, while the plan of her sister ship America shows gun ports at the level of her main battery below the stern gallery. What might she be in-game? A bruiser. A slower and less agile ship the single-deck frigates, but with decent firepower - a broadside of 280-300 pounds - and durability reflecting the additional enclosed deck and her mass and structure being condensed in a shorter ship (She's 17 or 18 feet shorter than Trincomalee). A way for lower-ranked captains to experience the sailing and fighting style of later ships of the line, and at higher levels a tank among frigates and a watchdog and tagger for ships of the line. If, like other fifth-rates, she had the option of an all-carronade armament, the equivalence between carronade and cannon weights is different in game, and the 68/42/32-pounder setup would be more likely to find expression in a 32-42/32/18-24 pounder setup. Yes, Rainbow is a British ship, but I've been able to find plenty of information about her along with plans and models of her sisters and her career as an old-style two-decker that served in the time dominated by single-deck sail frigates is interesting. There are a whole heap of intermediate two-deckers from other nations but I've largely only been able to find minimal information for them - mostly names, service dates, and career highlights with a sort of two out of three of armament, measurements, and crew complement and without models, plans, or art of them. So while I've opened with Rainbow as an example, I invite anyone to discuss any intermediate two-deckers or demi-batteries that would match the in-game fifth rate.
  12. hi this is my model of HMS HERMIONE, Andromeda class 32 gun frigate of 1782. Its still under construction at the moment but I just thought I would post some pics of how she looks so far.... and im open to suggestions and any help anyone can offer! My reason for choosing the Hermione is because of her history, bloodiest mutiny on any british warship..... ragnar hairy trousers
  13. 'Boadicea' 1797 Very active ship with rich history. Boadicea was one of a batch of large frigates ordered in 1795, all of which were the largest of their type, and the majority of which were to the draught of captured French ships, the Navy then being under the sway of Middleton and the French school of thought, a school supposing that the design of warships in France was of a higher quality. She was built to the design of Imperieuse, a 40-gun ship completed in 1787 and captured in October 1793. Changes were made to the shape of the topsides, and the scantlings and fastenings were strengthened to reflect British practice. She retained her shallow French hull form, and as a result the holds and magazines were considered cramped. More history and action can be found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Boadicea_(1797) Armament: Upper deck: 28 × 18-pounder guns QD: 8 × 9-pounder guns + 6 × 32-pounder carronades FC: 2 × 9-pounder guns + 2 × 32-pounder carronades Ship Plans
  14. 'Raleigh' USS Raleigh was one of thirteen ships that the Continental Congress authorized for the United States Navy in 1775. Following her capture in 1778, she served in the Royal Navy as HMS Raleigh. Feel free to post more plans or details. Ship Plan http://www.dlumberyard.com/Plans/raleigh.pdf ---
  15. 'President' USS President was a wooden-hulled, three-masted heavy frigate of the United States Navy, nominally rated at 44 guns. George Washington named her to reflect a principle of the United States Constitution. She was launched in April 1800 from a shipyard in New York City. President was one of the original six frigates whose construction the Naval Act of 1794 had authorized, and she was the last to be completed. Characteristics Class and type: 50-gun 60-gun (1817) Tons burthen: 1533 7⁄94 (bm) Length: 173 ft 3 in (52.8 m) (overall); 146 ft 4 3⁄4 in (44.6 m) (keel) Beam: 44 ft 4 in (13.5 m) Depth of hold: 13 ft 11 in (4.2 m) Armament: 30 × 24-pounder guns (10.9 kg) 28 × 42-pounder (19 kg) carronades 2 × 24-pounder guns (10.9 kg) Plans
  16. We all know that sometimes ships of the line were cut-down one deck and became razées, powerfull frigates. The most notable example of this kind of ships within the timeframe of NA most probably is the Indefatigable. What´s probably less known is that a couple of frigates also had their quarterdeck and forecastle deck removed and were reclassed as sloops of war / corvettes. A couple of examples of this pretty interesting ship type: USS John Adams Launched 1799 (armament 24 12-pounders + 2 12-pounder bow chasers, 6 24-pound carronades), cut down to a sloop in 1807-09 with 24 42-pound carronades and 2 12-pounder bow chasers. I found plans for the John Adams as frigate (by our fellow captain Talos, by the way), but regretably none for the sloop. La Circée (Armide-class) Launched 1811, converted to a corvette sans gaillards in 1832. Armament: 24 long 18-pounders and 4 short 30-pounders. Plans for La Circée as a sloop from the Atlas du Génie Maritime: As the captain of La Circée after her conversion observed in his logbook, the vastly improved speed and maneuverabilty of his frégate rasée 'could do much harm to the enemy', but he raised concerns about the lack of sufficient space for the crew. The 18-pounder frigates L'Aréthuse and La Cybèle (both Pallas-class) were also razeed in the early 1830s, the 40-gun frigates of the 1824 program, L'Arthémise and La Galathée, were converted while still in the docks, carrying 24 short 30-pounders and 6 18-pound carronades after launch. Samarang (Atholl-class) Designed as small 28-gun 'jack-ass' frigates, some ships of this class were cut down to sloops. Class design: http://collections.rmg.co.uk/collections/objects/83004.html Model of the Samarang after her conversion: http://collections.rmg.co.uk/collections/objects/66666.html Armament as sloop: 18 32-pound carronades, 2 long 9-pounders
  17. HMS Prince Regent (1814), 56 guns. HMS Prince Regent was the largest British ship to see action on the Great Lakes in the War of 1812. Built at Kingston, Ontario in response to the advent of American super-frigates and the arms race to maximize firepower relative to size in ships built to operate on the Lakes, the Prince Regent packed a big punch into a unique hull. She was variously referred to as a frigate and a two-decker SoL. http://collections.rmg.co.uk/collections/objects/66642.html#k3RsgjfGHcTwtqGG.97 Length of Gundeck - 155' 10" Breadth - 43' 1" Depth in Hold - 9' 2" Burthen - 1,293 50⁄94 Tons BM Spar Deck - 20-24x 32pdr carronades + 4-8x 68pdr carronades (28x total) Upper Deck - 28-30x 24pdr guns Crew - variously reported as 280 and 550 http://davidgibbins.com/journal/2016/4/5/diving-the-wreck-of-hms-prince-regent-1814-kingston-ontario-canada
  18. Since we already have seen the L'Hébé-class a couple of days ago, here´s the next step in Sané´s 18-pounder frigate evolution: NMM: http://collections.rmg.co.uk/collections.html#!csearch;authority=vessel-358102;browseBy=vessel;vesselFacetLetter=V%252523wVh72x6jDhUXPGUu.97%2523dfzUMCoiguPuSzrY.97 Not the same class or by the same designer, but La Virginie would have looked pretty similiar to Rolland´s La Flore: Dimensions (pied de roi) length 143' breadth 36' 8'' depth in hold 19' Armament 28 18-pounder 12 8-pounder 4 36-pound obusiers Laid down 1793, launched 1794, lead ship of the Virginie-class (10 ships total). Taken 1796 by Indefatigable. History as RN vessel: http://threedecks.org/index.php?display_type=show_ship&id=7351
  19. 'L'Hébé' Hébé was an 38-gun of the French Navy, lead ship of the Hébé-class frigate. Career Soon after her commissioning under Captain de Vigny, Hébé was tasked to escort a convoy from Saint Malo to Brest and protect shipping from the depredations of the British Royal Navy in the context of the Anglo-French War. On 3 September 1782, she was chased by the frigate HMS Rainbow, whose 32-pounder chase guns shot away her wheel, allowing the British to catch on and leading to the Action of 4 September 1782. In the ensuing battle, Rainbow devastated Hébé at close range with her newly-introduced carronades. Sustaining severe damage and losses among his crew, Vigny, mistaking Rainbow for a disguised ship of the line and his collapsed foremast preventing him from maneuvering effectively, struck his colors. Hébé was taken in British served first as HMS Hebe, and later renamed HMS Blonde. She was eventually broken up in 1811. Armament: 26 x long 18-pounders 8 x long 8-pounders Hebe Frigate, Very close match.
  20. I initially wanted to make a post about La Cérès (1823) by H. Garnier St. Maurice, but couldn´t find plans for her, so here´s the pretty similiar L'Artémise. http://mnm.webmuseo.com/ws/musee-national-marine/app/collection/record/9045 Dimensions Length: 52.80 m Breadth: 13,40 m Depth in Hold: 7.05 m Armament 28 24-pounders 2 18-pounder (chase guns, forecastle) 22 24-pound carronades Launched 1828, 1837 - 1840 circumnavigation of the globe Ships in class: L'Andromède, La Glorie, La Néreide, La Cléopâtre, La Danäé, La Virginie (La Niobe)
  21. 'Raae' by danish constructor Judichaer. Raae was launched 1709 and in service until 1751
  22. Junon The Junon was a 32-gun (12 lb) Charmante class frigate of the French Navy She took part in the Battle of Ushant under Admiral d'Orvilliers. She captured HMS Fox on 11 September 1778. On 17 August 1779, under captain Charles de Bernard de Marigny and along with Gentille, she captured HMS Ardent. On 13 September, under lieutenant Kergariou Locmaria, she captured HMS Rover. Wrecked by the Great Hurricane of 1780 off Saint Vincent on 11 October 1780 Plans Art
