  2. Just been fooling around with my Twitch stream overlay to add a bit of character to my sea adventures Because Naval Action UI is dynamic and changes in the OW, Battle Instance and when you aiming, this overlay only works in Battle Instance sailing. I just have to switch it off in OW. Will make another one later that fits OW too.

  3. With the other proposed sets of kick starter packs being thrown about I thought I might make my turn to do a Venetian one, mainly with the aim of providing some things that are a little bit different to what we already have and what the other proposed packs are offering. I will also start by saying that these are my personal suggestions after a good think, if there is a ship that is missing from this group I would more than gladly discuss swapping a ship or adding any others. Polacca (c1750) Adding a Polacca to the game gives the devs two nice options, one they can have a new small fighting, and two they can also use the same model for a trade Polacca as has been done with the other trade ships, the trade brig for example. Polacca were used quite extensively by Venice as both a small escort ship and as a trade ship itself, they are nimble and sail fairly well up and down wind, their real advantage however is their ability to deter boarding, their high sides being a great advantage in this situation when being attacked by their main enemies, the North African Barbary Pirates. There is also a nice advantage in that there is a purchasable scale model produced by Amati. Sciabecco (18th Century) The devs have toyed with the idea of adding a Xebec for a while now, I just thought it might be fun to throw in a detailed plan of what formed the back bone for the Venetian fleets activities in home waters, this is a 34 gun variant built to mainly operate in the coastal waters of the Venetian Lagoon and the Dalmatia, this style of Xebec would add some flair and variety to fighting in shallow waters. Historically the day to day activities of these ships were to discourage illegal activity and protect higher value trading convoys. I also have a sail map for a similar vessel if anyone is interested. Muiron (1797) I had a long think over whether to include Muiron or rather go for her parent, the Palma class (1784) but I decided to go for Murion, mainly due to the importance Muiron played in breaking through the British blockade of Egypt, inevitably saving Napoleon from capture or death after the battle of the Nile. Napoleon also wished Muiron to be preserved eternally as thanks for his safety and so it would be a nice little tribute to him to do so electronically in the game. For further information please see the dedicated post to her by @Sella22, I will post a link below. Fama (1784) I have personally worked long and hard on trying to unravel the history of the Fama class and have given at least a brief history for each of the 6 ships built, it would be a dream come true to be able to sail her in game. I have explained before my reasons for adding her when it comes to adding Fama, as the swan song of the Venetian Republic's shipbuilding she was the last and most heavily armed of the Fregata Grossa class, the Venetian line of super frigates dating back to the 1720s. She would be a fantastic ship to see in game, not at least to offer some alternative to the Agamemnon dominance of 4th rate battles. She is beautiful, charismatic and historic, her various sisters serving in the Venetian, French and Austrian navy, and as my signature suggests, she is the one I would be most happy to see. Link below to dedicated thread. Bonus: I would love to see either of these ships added on to the pack but when it comes down to the cost of ship development I would much rather see the others added over the two below. Leon Trionfante (1716) The Leon Trionfante is a ship I have discussed before, the main reason I like her is she has such a long history as a ship, serving her users well for over 100 years and taking part in multiple conflicts, as the ship is more of a bonus choice I wont go into huge detail of why I would like to see her, if you wish to read more please visit her own thread. I also like her because she offers a smaller alternative to a 3rd rate, being armed with 70 guns. Or "1780"/La Harpe The 1780 is the other of my bonus choices, my less favourite over the Leon Trionfante, mostly due to her relatively short history. I just like her design really, she would, like Leon Trionfante be a nice offering to give as another compact 3rd rate, but unlike Leon Trionfante was capable of being armed with 74 guns, which again gives a nice little option to take over the current crop we have of the 3rd and the Bellona. Links to more information: Thank you for reading I hope you can find some time to support this proposed pack

  5. Honestly, who cares how many views you get or who is watching. If you enjoy doing it do it. On the main subject, I like the concept you have. I might have gone with a more worn wood look. Gold lettering for the buttons and the typeface as if done in quill and ink. Although I would have gone with as small of a panel as possible. Minimize the amount the UI blocks of the game itself.

  10. My contribution here is, The Story of the Civil War, by John Codman Ropes, first published in 1894. He was a highly respected military historian of the time. This work is in 3 volumes. He fell gravely ill at the time he was starting on the 3rd volume and asked his long time friend and fellow member of the Massachusetts Historical Society, retired Army Colonel William Roscoe Livermore (whose pic you see to the left) to finish it for him. This three volume set stands out from most works on the Civil War in several ways. It was the first work to include topographical maps. At the time, it was practically impossible to place each map in its specific chapter. So they were mounted on the inside back cover. Later in the third volume Livermore had smaller, fit to page maps within the text. But still retained the larger maps at the back. Another unique aspect was the large amount of historical documents that are referenced throughout. Of great interest are references to the actual correspondences from leaders to generals, generals to generals, that shaped policy and tactics. You won't believe what you will read here!!!!! Finally the book was written as to be not only a history of the war but a critique as well. And as a teaching tool for cadets too. A good part of the first volume really gets into the; why's the North and South got into the war. Yes I know easy...it was about slavery. But it's other things too and that was more interesting to me. Then FINALLY the war starts. And the books covers the campaigns throughout. This isn't for the casual reader but more for those deeply interested in military history. The things you'll discover about decisions, the "why he didn't attack" and other "whys" while reading this will surprise you. The correspondences alone are fascinating!! There's so much here...it's worth the read for the avid civil war person. Oh and why Livermore's pic for me? One of the founding fathers of war gaming in the United States!!! First to introduce table top war games as a way to teach tactics. AND, I got to live in the house he lived in 1878 when he was assigned to Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Enjoy the books!

  11. The funny part of it is that the majority of players that will stick to Global don't give a rats ass about what this salty forumer Global server hello kittyers ( yeah you read it right ) keep preaching with their hate towards the EU server decision. What they are accomplishing, in my point of view is alienating themselves more and more to a corner while trying to make everyone around feel bad for some sorry reason. Ridiculous and childish. Let the damn thread flow until we are fed up with it sound like a good compromise until NN is finally reformed as announced a while ago. Then instead of pushing pus around festered wound they can scratch their own I-R-BABOON arses.

  13. I haven't figured out an exact formula, but from my experience, the optimal min-max size of infatry brigades is between 1400 and 1500. Why? 1. You want the brigade to be large enough to be able to resist large charges, deploy large detached skirmishers, and avoid being shattered. 2. You want it to be close to 1250 so that you can combine brigades after taking some casualties. 3. You want it to be small so the rewards are adequate to keep your fighting force effective and also to prevent auto-scaling. 4. The weapons and officers availability (doesn't scale to your army size to my knowledge) favors smaller units. Lt. Colonels will have no trouble commanding 1,500 men. Continually equipping 2,500 sized brigades is nearly impossible on Hard and Legendary. My legendary CSA campaign has unit sizes of 1500 when 3* and 1800 when 2*. Union I go for even smaller brigades (around 1,400 on all experience levels) since they'll let you deploy more of them for big battles. Though I'll have a few very large units for when they only let you deploy a few vanguard brigades that need to hold a position or set up for a counterattack.

  15. This is actually a really easy battle after you've learned how to exploit it. There are several bugs that seem to happen as a result of the phase changes. And Stuart's calvary gets trapped in the corner and destroyed way too easily. But the real reason I made this thread is because I wanted to share this screenshot with the only people who will appreciate it.

  16. Regarding recent preliminary announcement. Based on the community feedback and the analysis of player data and numbers. PvE server will not be closed down. We guarantee that it will exist for at least 18-24 months after official release. and will revisit this promise then. In addition to that we have not mentioned it before - but we are developing additional PVE content and new types of missions for PVE players. AI will be worked on after release and will provide more challenge in the future. official release means the estimated release date in this case.

  17. I can confirme , the time when US get down too nearly one Port. Was not good for the US Nation. The next thing is there are not enough EU-Timers in the US-NA-NATION. When i joint in march there where more EU Players(Germans). But many Quit after the First attack from SORRY. The next thing why EU Players Quit was the Portbattletimes, cause they coud only participate in Defens. Or must stay awake until 2 or 4am gmt+1. After a year there are not many EU players in the US-Nation left.

  21. I'm not exactly sure what you're asking or accusing us of here to be exact. - No it wasn't 5 night flips in a row. - the US nation player base attacked at night because we had 25 at night. Up until 7up came over we were lucky to have 10 people on during the day. Even with 7up we did not have a full US PB during the daytime. We had Brits/Dutch to help fill the battles. - Majority of the US players were on in the evenings, hence the night flips. - The Brits have a fairly decent number of US players that play within the nation, including a fair amount that play during the day. The US lost a lot of players to brit/pirate back when we were 1 ported a couple of times. - This server screen shot is of the past day or 2. Last night I saw 26 people online around 11pm US time. Pretty much everyone has given up playing. - I think you're under estimating just how small the US was. We were the smallest or one of the smallest nations shown on the charts Admin posted a couple weeks ago with a very small RVR to Casual player ratio. Unfortunately due to our times most of us cannot do RVR on a daily basis and don't bother. So again, what exactly do you want?

  24. I'm currently tackling Battle Cry of Freedom and despite the rather dry subjects of the first few chapters, I'm enjoying it a great deal. I'm not American so the ACW was not something I came across naturally, like in school or conversation. But for Christmas 2015 my girlfriend gifted me 14 books in total, one of them just happened to be Bruce Catton's A Stillness at Appomattox. I was a bit put off by the fact that it was the third book of a trilogy and that I wasnt familiar with that period of history but once I started reading, I couldnt stop. He tells the story of the final years of the civil war from the perspective of the Army of the Potomac, from the commanders right down to the common soldiers, focusing on their experiences and interactions rather than dry politics and social trends. Battles like the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbour and Petersburg are recreated with fascinating detail. It is entirely focused on a single theatre of the war, on a brief time-period and only the Union perspective so it's not best to read it for a full understanding of the civil war but the narrative is so well written and such a vital piece of the time period that it's a fantastic read. It really highlights the reasons why the Army of the Potomac struggled for so long against a smaller force despite it's overwhelming resources, manpower and experience (mainly due to gross incompetence, confederate stubbornness and very bad luck). I've come to appreciate the desperate fighting that took place during a period that many assume was all down-hill for the Union. (btw, Bruce Catton has a real 'thing' for Philip Sheridan.)

I want my money back". BG Wilson

  31. Most players, at least among those that I know and play together with, play to have a good time and not to sabotage the fun of others. Be happy that some EU server players plan to sometimes visit the global server to give you guys some extra PvP. Have fun on the global server together with the players who have been intentionally sabotaging the fun of others and driving opponent players away, only then to mock and complain when the fruits of their labour was reaped and players started leaving because there was no fun left in the game. Better that we keep playing the game on another server than stop playing altogether. Then maybe someday we can come together on one server again. There is a saying in some languages, that the bad things that you imagine of others that they would do, is determined by what you yourself would be capable of doing. Most EU players that intend to visit the global server, will do so for variety, PvP-targets and to meet old friends or foes. It's only really in the Western Alliance that there's been open talk of going to the EU server to sabotage after the split. But if you want to come over to the EU server to mess with the map and do some Port Battles in EU prime-time, then be my guest. Maybe some of you'll enjoy fighting skilled opposition and stick around.

  33. detached skirmishers for about 80 reasons. Don't occupy a brigade slot, can be reattached and detached again to recover men, guns tend to be easier to get, guns tend to be cheaper/ more likely to be dropped, don't require as much micro, you have the option of using them instead of being stuck with them, can take on cannons without breaking the bank, doesn't kill the officer when the unit shatters, officer can't get wounded. But most importantly, the AI gets get Black Ops quality skirmishers due to autoscaling when you have sharpshooters. Ok I know I came up like 70 reasons short, so sorry about that.

  34. Getting killed being in a random brigade is annoying. This another time where my Division Commander Archer was killed while supposedly being with the 6th unit which was an artillery piece that got flanked by skirmishers/sharpshooters. I prefer to have an individual unit with additional bonuses or able to assign him to a unit and only gives extra bonuses along with a XP boost to that selected unit. Either one would be great.

  38. MAJ Grigg, I wish to suggest a few of my favorites - but just like everyone else - each contributor's suggestions has their own peculiarities that may or may not appeal to you: 1. Antietam - the Soldier's Battle by John M Priest = great book with tremendous amount of maps showing placement of regiments at different places 2. Co. Aytch - by Sam Watkins = tremendous book by a soldier of the 1st Tennessee Regiment who fought at Manassas and then with the Western army for the rest of the war. Many insights of the common soldier and a lot of humor - written for his kids 10 or so years after the war ended. 3. North With Lee & Jackson - by Kegel = lot of insights from a number of sources including Jed Hotchkiss - Jackson's map-maker who worked on secret maps for future campaigns (such as The Valley campaign - with map showing all the defensive positions for Jackson to study and plan (such as forced marching to Winchester)) & in early Feb 1863 making maps for Jackson of the lower valley including Harrisburg, PA, and then a continuance map(s) for going after the anthracite coal mines in the 6 counties east of Harrisburg and continuing on to include Philadelphia. 4. Return to Bull Run - by John J Hennessy = book by a Manassas Battlefield National Park Ranger who KNOWS his stuff about the 2nd Battle of Manassas / Bull Run of 1862. He covers all the stories and actions - great book. <He does not cover the ghost "Henry" who dresses in a Federal Zouave uniform and occasionally stands at the railroad cut, explaining the action of what was occurring in the Grover attack sector - have to be wary as if you take your eyes off him to see where he is pointing, he will disappear.> 5. Bull Run Remembers - by Hanson = a small book that covers incidents surrounding both 1st & 2nd Battles of Manassas / Bull Run. Unique insights and flavors here, such as the story of John Rice, Federal soldier of Maine, who was hit in the left chest and observed moving slightly by a fence by a passing couple in their carriage (with handkerchiefs over nose and mouth due to the smell) two days after the battle. They took him to their home, nursed him to health and sent him on his way. After the war he contacted them to thank them and asked if they needed anything. They suggested they could use about $30 or more to repair Sudley Church (it still stands at the east end of the defensive line) which had been badly damaged and then used as a field hospital during both battles.. Mr. Rice went home and raised the money and sent it to help the repairs. His doctor always wondering about his left-chest bullet wound, did an autopsy after his passing away only to find that his heart was actually located on the right side of his chest. 6. Barksdale's Charge - by Paul J. Tucker = discusses this charge at Gettysburg on the 2nd day, arguing his point that this was the Confederacy's high-water mark that almost brought the Army of the Potomac to its knees, not the next day's Pickett's Charge. 7. Hood's Texas Brigade - the title says it all. I think we all wish you good reading! --Gael

  39. I think this is the simplest way to do things. The reason I want something like an artillery division or cav division is more so I could move them quickly in a group during battle. It isn't an issue to spread them out but most of the time I like to concentrate my corps artillery at a good spot. Would be simpler if I could have it as a division, even if I only get 2 of 4 brigades in a scenario.

  40. I agree with Mr. Mercanto regarding 'Battle Cry of Freedom'. A must read for an overall understanding of the state of the Nation leading up to and through the ACW. A long read, but never dull in my opinion. I will also put in my two cents for Stephen W. Sears' 'Landscape Turned Red'. I also enjoyed his book, 'Gettysburg'. 'For Cause & For Country' by Eric A. Jacobson is a well written book on the battle of Franklin, Tennessee - which culminated in the final defeat of the Army of Tennessee at Nashville a few days later.

  45. A little off topic, but indulge me.... The worst thing about the wipe for me will be losing the Bucentaure you (Sir Texas Sir) crafted with pirate refit and speed. That ship took me to the highest rank this week. Thank you for your good work!

  46. You're asking for a system that allows a fair fight on the open world. There is no fair fights on the open world. Even when they're close one ship is specced for speed and the other for fighting. The point of open world combat is not a "fair" fight. It's killing the other side. If you're getting caught then you're doing something wrong and you learn from those mistakes. Signaling just limits BR to make for more "fair" fights. Then you get teammates that can't get in because they're in a connie and other guys hunting your lgv in a suprise. Let's pull out the BR calculator before we even attempt to go help out our mate so none of our other teammates get stuck outside that battle to be ganked because they can't get in. I'll say it again. Fair fights belong in a lobbied battle. We have those.

  48. You were alone in the battle against your own twink in the zone of the Admiralty event until the pirates from 18BEK came to you. At the same time, you are saying that you did not plan to finish this fight either. Any ending of the fight would lead to the receipt of the event points by you or your twink. That's funny.

  50. Rolling Front vs Rolling Back Many people probably don't even know why we have these 3 gun firing options in Naval Action. Firing Front Firing Back Random. (Useless ) This visual guide is made to explain people why Rolling Front Shooting is very important when two ships are passing each other. Timing first shot will always guarantee 100% broadside hit on enemy ship. Note* if you are using Rolling Back firing mode half of your shots will miss (depends on how fast 2 ships are sailing, speed times 2). Remember to always use Rolling front when 2 ships facing and about to pass each other. You can use Rolling Back when 2 ships are parallel and sailing in one direction. Ex. Catching a trader will require you to slightly angle and use rolling back. Final Tip - use T and break while unloading broadside. This will make sure timing is right. Example of 9 Guns Ship.
