  1. Enough with the toxicity between EU / US ! This community is turning into shit right now.

  3. That said, I don't generally post in National News. I hate the negativity here. But I will say this: I hope nobody takes such a silly pledge. There is more that brings us together than pushes us apart, and should we come to a point where we go back to a unified server, I want any bad blood to have been erased by time. No faction has a monopoly on distasteful behavior, and no faction is defined by it.

  4. With the other proposed sets of kick starter packs being thrown about I thought I might make my turn to do a Venetian one, mainly with the aim of providing some things that are a little bit different to what we already have and what the other proposed packs are offering. I will also start by saying that these are my personal suggestions after a good think, if there is a ship that is missing from this group I would more than gladly discuss swapping a ship or adding any others. Polacca (c1750) Adding a Polacca to the game gives the devs two nice options, one they can have a new small fighting, and two they can also use the same model for a trade Polacca as has been done with the other trade ships, the trade brig for example. Polacca were used quite extensively by Venice as both a small escort ship and as a trade ship itself, they are nimble and sail fairly well up and down wind, their real advantage however is their ability to deter boarding, their high sides being a great advantage in this situation when being attacked by their main enemies, the North African Barbary Pirates. There is also a nice advantage in that there is a purchasable scale model produced by Amati. Sciabecco (18th Century) The devs have toyed with the idea of adding a Xebec for a while now, I just thought it might be fun to throw in a detailed plan of what formed the back bone for the Venetian fleets activities in home waters, this is a 34 gun variant built to mainly operate in the coastal waters of the Venetian Lagoon and the Dalmatia, this style of Xebec would add some flair and variety to fighting in shallow waters. Historically the day to day activities of these ships were to discourage illegal activity and protect higher value trading convoys. I also have a sail map for a similar vessel if anyone is interested. Muiron (1797) I had a long think over whether to include Muiron or rather go for her parent, the Palma class (1784) but I decided to go for Murion, mainly due to the importance Muiron played in breaking through the British blockade of Egypt, inevitably saving Napoleon from capture or death after the battle of the Nile. Napoleon also wished Muiron to be preserved eternally as thanks for his safety and so it would be a nice little tribute to him to do so electronically in the game. For further information please see the dedicated post to her by @Sella22, I will post a link below. Fama (1784) I have personally worked long and hard on trying to unravel the history of the Fama class and have given at least a brief history for each of the 6 ships built, it would be a dream come true to be able to sail her in game. I have explained before my reasons for adding her when it comes to adding Fama, as the swan song of the Venetian Republic's shipbuilding she was the last and most heavily armed of the Fregata Grossa class, the Venetian line of super frigates dating back to the 1720s. She would be a fantastic ship to see in game, not at least to offer some alternative to the Agamemnon dominance of 4th rate battles. She is beautiful, charismatic and historic, her various sisters serving in the Venetian, French and Austrian navy, and as my signature suggests, she is the one I would be most happy to see. Link below to dedicated thread. Bonus: I would love to see either of these ships added on to the pack but when it comes down to the cost of ship development I would much rather see the others added over the two below. Leon Trionfante (1716) The Leon Trionfante is a ship I have discussed before, the main reason I like her is she has such a long history as a ship, serving her users well for over 100 years and taking part in multiple conflicts, as the ship is more of a bonus choice I wont go into huge detail of why I would like to see her, if you wish to read more please visit her own thread. I also like her because she offers a smaller alternative to a 3rd rate, being armed with 70 guns. Or "1780"/La Harpe The 1780 is the other of my bonus choices, my less favourite over the Leon Trionfante, mostly due to her relatively short history. I just like her design really, she would, like Leon Trionfante be a nice offering to give as another compact 3rd rate, but unlike Leon Trionfante was capable of being armed with 74 guns, which again gives a nice little option to take over the current crop we have of the 3rd and the Bellona. Links to more information: Thank you for reading I hope you can find some time to support this proposed pack

  5. For those who may have missed it, it was announced yesterday that the USS constitution is to become the oldest floating warship again, replacing the temporary title holder HMS Trincomalee (the same one in the game). This follows a large repair and restoration job replacing and resealing the planking. She is due to be relaunched back into Boston harbour towards the end of July. 6. To piggy back off of John Snow's (your old name was better) bounty thread found here: I've decided to throw a bunch of paints, labor contracts and notes on a ship and sail around encouraging everyone to try and sink/capture their favorite American captain. I'll of course announce in global when and where and stream my progress. Type of ship and build will of course remain super secret. This will be done most of the day Saturday and maybe Friday night. I'm shipping more stuff down now, sweeten the pot a bit. To my special snow flake friends, time to sink the guy who everyone hates. Come find me. https://www.twitch.tv/christendomul Shout out to Pagan Pete would who do this a while ago. PS - please note the proper PVP1-EU server designation in the thread title. So Simple! Much WoW!

  7. Just been fooling around with my Twitch stream overlay to add a bit of character to my sea adventures Because Naval Action UI is dynamic and changes in the OW, Battle Instance and when you aiming, this overlay only works in Battle Instance sailing. I just have to switch it off in OW. Will make another one later that fits OW too.

  9. Most players, at least among those that I know and play together with, play to have a good time and not to sabotage the fun of others. Be happy that some EU server players plan to sometimes visit the global server to give you guys some extra PvP. Have fun on the global server together with the players who have been intentionally sabotaging the fun of others and driving opponent players away, only then to mock and complain when the fruits of their labour was reaped and players started leaving because there was no fun left in the game. Better that we keep playing the game on another server than stop playing altogether. Then maybe someday we can come together on one server again. There is a saying in some languages, that the bad things that you imagine of others that they would do, is determined by what you yourself would be capable of doing. Most EU players that intend to visit the global server, will do so for variety, PvP-targets and to meet old friends or foes. It's only really in the Western Alliance that there's been open talk of going to the EU server to sabotage after the split. But if you want to come over to the EU server to mess with the map and do some Port Battles in EU prime-time, then be my guest. Maybe some of you'll enjoy fighting skilled opposition and stick around.

  10. Sorry for my bad english! I think crafted ship should be better then NPC captured ships. But only in the details and selected outfits. Its much work to get the ressources and we will sell them too. So give them one or better two selected Regional-Refits, selected woodtyp and trim. This should be give a constant bonus, like 5% more hull or speed. No matter what experience the captain have. Limit the NPC-ships for the standard woods like Oak, Teak, Fir or only small percent (max 5%) of better constuction. Give them random Refits and trims, so with luck you get a nice one, but all are playable and you can improve them by sailing and fighting. To improve our ships we must have perks like speed or turning, which are possible to improve with the experience on this ship . Or perhaps you can do more perks with more experience. So we need the regions for the refit and the ressources, and we will fight for this regions, mean portbattles PVP! We will improve our ships, so we must sail and fight with them, mean more open world action in PVE and PVP. Trading ressources for crafting must be neccesary and profitable!!!! So you have human-traders on the open world too. I hope you have the same ideas greeting Fury

  11. No, but those ships did exist and were used with varying degrees of success during the game's time period. Galleons were extremely dull sailers compared to the ships in our game. Even sweeping upwind could be better accomplished by the other, smaller vessels we have in game - and if we're going to make an argument for sweeps, then we could make an easy argument for galleys instead. That said, sweeping only works when there isn't a lot of wind - any ship such as a galleon with that degree of windage (and leeway) isn't going to be sweeping much of anywhere any time soon - anyone they were sweeping towards could easily sail off on a reach, leaving the galleon standing. There were no real "race built galleons" that could run down a Lynx. There wasn't a galleon sailing that could catch a modern ship of war at the time - likely not even a merchant vessel. The technology used in their construction, sail plan, rigging, etc. was outdated and meant that they couldn't point nearly as high as even Victory, and couldn't run with a comparable speed either. The cannon they carried were puny and underpowered as well - in anything but a boarding fight they would be guaranteed to lose against a captain that knew to keep his/her distance. What you're asking for is to take a vessel that had been retired for any serious warfare for nearly a hundred years, and to use game mechanics to buff it into something it never was, and never could be, to do things they couldn't do. This is great for a Pirates of the Caribbean style game, where kraken and sea monsters and ships that never existed (nor could exist) is the norm, but not for Naval Action, which strives to be historically accurate, within reason and with license given when necessary for good gameplay and fun. Galleons with specialized tasks to make them competitive are just a step too far.

  12. My contribution here is, The Story of the Civil War, by John Codman Ropes, first published in 1894. He was a highly respected military historian of the time. This work is in 3 volumes. He fell gravely ill at the time he was starting on the 3rd volume and asked his long time friend and fellow member of the Massachusetts Historical Society, retired Army Colonel William Roscoe Livermore (whose pic you see to the left) to finish it for him. This three volume set stands out from most works on the Civil War in several ways. It was the first work to include topographical maps. At the time, it was practically impossible to place each map in its specific chapter. So they were mounted on the inside back cover. Later in the third volume Livermore had smaller, fit to page maps within the text. But still retained the larger maps at the back. Another unique aspect was the large amount of historical documents that are referenced throughout. Of great interest are references to the actual correspondences from leaders to generals, generals to generals, that shaped policy and tactics. You won't believe what you will read here!!!!! Finally the book was written as to be not only a history of the war but a critique as well. And as a teaching tool for cadets too. A good part of the first volume really gets into the; why's the North and South got into the war. Yes I know easy...it was about slavery. But it's other things too and that was more interesting to me. Then FINALLY the war starts. And the books covers the campaigns throughout. This isn't for the casual reader but more for those deeply interested in military history. The things you'll discover about decisions, the "why he didn't attack" and other "whys" while reading this will surprise you. The correspondences alone are fascinating!! There's so much here...it's worth the read for the avid civil war person. Oh and why Livermore's pic for me? One of the founding fathers of war gaming in the United States!!! First to introduce table top war games as a way to teach tactics. AND, I got to live in the house he lived in 1878 when he was assigned to Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Enjoy the books!

  14. The funny part of it is that the majority of players that will stick to Global don't give a rats ass about what this salty forumer Global server hello kittyers ( yeah you read it right ) keep preaching with their hate towards the EU server decision. What they are accomplishing, in my point of view is alienating themselves more and more to a corner while trying to make everyone around feel bad for some sorry reason. Ridiculous and childish. Let the damn thread flow until we are fed up with it sound like a good compromise until NN is finally reformed as announced a while ago. Then instead of pushing pus around festered wound they can scratch their own I-R-BABOON arses.

  17. I do think that the scalling is dumb. I wish there was a option that would make enemy armies have the same numbers they did IRL, so that you don't end up fighting against 120000 (50% more that there actually were) Union troops at Antietam.

  18. These notes contain some very emotional and explosive changes. While we understand some players may be angry or upset by them, please remain respectful and constructive in your replies or your post will be hidden and a warning may be issued. This is a feedback thread, please keep your responses to constructive feedback. Thank you - H. Darby Hello Captains Here is the information on forthcoming testbed patch and future patches The goal of next couple patches is to bring more players to the open world. At least 2 will be deployed before wipe. The rest will follow after. We will be gradually changing features that hide players from the open world. Most game mechanics from now on will have to motivate players to sail out and do something on the Open world map. We also will change some areas that were causing pains for players (and potentially introduce new pain areas accidentally - but this will be fixed if we made a mistake). First test bed patch (estimated time to deliver end of next week) Removal of current upgrade system and ship quality level We were not satisfied with the fact that upgrades were worth more than ships themselves. Most upgrades will be removed from the game and transferred to individual ship knowledge, with bonuses that will depend on individual ships and/or class. Sailing a ship and getting kills will add to XP on that ship that will unlock knowledge slots over time (currently all ships have 5 slots). All crafted ships will only have wood type and trim (designed by crafter). Every ship will have 3 permanent upgrades which will allow installation of bow figures and regional refits (crafteable permanent upgrade) Repairs changes Repair kits for fleets will be gone and replaced by another system. Standard ship repairs will be removed and replaced by another system. Port repairs remain (and will remain the cheapest way to fix your ship) Players will have to stock hull repairs (working title) and rig repairs (working title) to be able to repair. Every use of repair for hull will consume planks, every use of repair for sails/rig will consume rig repairs. Players will be able to decide which materials to stock for their gameplay style. Going to port battles you might need more hull repairs. For open world hunting more sail repairs might be necessary. OW and instance repair amounts will be equal. If you repair in the open world you can also use your fleet cargo to do so. You will be able to pick up repair materials from captured enemies. Or surrendered ships. Hold management in instances added, hold management for fleets is revamped. You will now be able to interact with the hold in instances between your fleet ships and your captured ships as said before you will be able to pick up enemy repairs and hold without taking the ship, because of this feature This is a complex feature but it can bring exciting new opportunities in battles especially if you are a good player Ability to pick up enemy hold from captured ships opens up new opportunities to change the flow of the battle We are currently researching the ability to interact with the hold of sinking ships as well (if you are close and the ship is still above water) Preliminary crafting overhaul Regional trims removed and transferred to permanent upgrades (crafteable) you will be able to craft a ship anywhere and install a refit in any port (refit can only be crafted in the regional port that has that mastery). For example Nassau boarders refit only be produced in Nassau RNG on blueprints removed. Most ships can now be received by 2 methods Unlock automatically on level - majority of vessels Admiralty rewards - freely available for pve/pvp or conquest marks (minority of vessels) Regular upgrade slots turn into ship dependent knowledge levels (allowing access to skills) Certain vessels blueprints will change and will require permits For example Lineships will require a special permit to manufacture Permits will be available from the admiralty for marks Admiralty store will be populated with more things to buy. Certain things will be removed from the admiralty Technical issues ship state system in instances overhauled to the release state, due to ability to change ship (and hold) multiple times within one instance. Old system was too rigid and partially used systems from the old sea trials and was holding us back Regarding next patches After this patch hits it will take some time to prepare the infrastructure for the wipe and map reset Next patch will focus on new missions revamp (+ some potential changes to hostility) and will be deployed during wipe. If not we will deploy it right after the asset reset. We still expect to be able to do the asset reset by end of April. more information will follow but those are main features that will be deployed to testbed next patch. additional information on the patch In the spirit of the goal - more people to the open world the following additional changes will be deployed. Resources transport from FT to FT - will be disabled (might return for a battle related consumable e.g. 25 pve marks or 2 pvp marks) Ship transport from FT to FT - will be disabled (might return for a battle related consumable eg. 25 pve marks or 2pvp marks) Port missions will provide farming options only for the first 1-3 levels. Small battles and all other sorts of lobby events will be removed PVE challenges will be temporarily disabled (will be a foundation for tutorials in the future) NPCs will provide ships for players to buy in almost all ports (but unlike old system they will be 2-3x more expensive than crafted ones). Captured NPC ships will be mostly useless and will not be a source of income (through ship or cannon sales) Update 2 on communication with enemies global chat will be removed Communication with enemies will be removed as well (both in the OW and instances) Toxicity in national chats will be worked on as before (based on reports)

  19. I think as we approach the "Great Wipe" and the servers being torn asunder it time to ask a simple thing of our Easter Alliance friends who will be migrating to the new EU server. Anyone who is choosing to make their Naval Action home on the EU server should make a public and binding(its your honor) pledge to not return to the Global server at a later date. I guess what I am saying its time for those of you who have said having your own server was the only way to make NA playable to "Nail your Flag to your Server Mast" I mean you have been granted your fondest wishes no more night flips no more nasty Mericans dirtying up your game. So openly declare your Loyalty to the EU Server tell the world you are in this for the long haul. It simple reply here with a simple I "State your Name" of the Clan "state your clan" of the mighty "State your nation" solemnly swear that once I have move to the EU server I will NEVER return to the Global pvp server no matter what. Easy Painless and it will show the world that y'all mean business or as we dirty Mericans like to say "Put you money where your mouth is" so no salt no personal attacks just cut and paste the pledge fill in your information and start packing

  22. I dont think crafting will die. Think about the chances of getting a ship of your likes: Theres 6 wood types and 6 trims, 36 different random combinations. Out of these combinations, everything including Fir, Oak, Teak, Planking or Rigging Quality is mostly consideres trash (thats already 24 combinations gone). Then you also dont want things like live oak with crew space or bermuda cedar with build strength, so lets cut another 6 combinations for that. That said, only 1 out of 6 AI captures will give you a ship that is truly competitive to crafted ships, and only 1 out of 36 AI captures will have that one exact build you really want. I think the time investment for crafting is WAY lower and WAY less annoying, whereas capped ships will still be used for yolo screening actions or small battles fun. Seems about right, no?

  23. So first you list a bunch of reasons you don't want to be part of the global community but then you still want a part in it when it suits you?! - I will be honest but if EU server players constantly invade our server and influence politics, RvR and economy then I and others will make damn certain to do the same on the EU server - in the end that would just be griefing and counter griefing so players should be locked to one of the two PvP servers only. It prevents griefing and gives the split community some time to calm down before we reunite the servers again!

  26. MAJ Grigg, I wish to suggest a few of my favorites - but just like everyone else - each contributor's suggestions has their own peculiarities that may or may not appeal to you: 1. Antietam - the Soldier's Battle by John M Priest = great book with tremendous amount of maps showing placement of regiments at different places 2. Co. Aytch - by Sam Watkins = tremendous book by a soldier of the 1st Tennessee Regiment who fought at Manassas and then with the Western army for the rest of the war. Many insights of the common soldier and a lot of humor - written for his kids 10 or so years after the war ended. 3. North With Lee & Jackson - by Kegel = lot of insights from a number of sources including Jed Hotchkiss - Jackson's map-maker who worked on secret maps for future campaigns (such as The Valley campaign - with map showing all the defensive positions for Jackson to study and plan (such as forced marching to Winchester)) & in early Feb 1863 making maps for Jackson of the lower valley including Harrisburg, PA, and then a continuance map(s) for going after the anthracite coal mines in the 6 counties east of Harrisburg and continuing on to include Philadelphia. 4. Return to Bull Run - by John J Hennessy = book by a Manassas Battlefield National Park Ranger who KNOWS his stuff about the 2nd Battle of Manassas / Bull Run of 1862. He covers all the stories and actions - great book. <He does not cover the ghost "Henry" who dresses in a Federal Zouave uniform and occasionally stands at the railroad cut, explaining the action of what was occurring in the Grover attack sector - have to be wary as if you take your eyes off him to see where he is pointing, he will disappear.> 5. Bull Run Remembers - by Hanson = a small book that covers incidents surrounding both 1st & 2nd Battles of Manassas / Bull Run. Unique insights and flavors here, such as the story of John Rice, Federal soldier of Maine, who was hit in the left chest and observed moving slightly by a fence by a passing couple in their carriage (with handkerchiefs over nose and mouth due to the smell) two days after the battle. They took him to their home, nursed him to health and sent him on his way. After the war he contacted them to thank them and asked if they needed anything. They suggested they could use about $30 or more to repair Sudley Church (it still stands at the east end of the defensive line) which had been badly damaged and then used as a field hospital during both battles.. Mr. Rice went home and raised the money and sent it to help the repairs. His doctor always wondering about his left-chest bullet wound, did an autopsy after his passing away only to find that his heart was actually located on the right side of his chest. 6. Barksdale's Charge - by Paul J. Tucker = discusses this charge at Gettysburg on the 2nd day, arguing his point that this was the Confederacy's high-water mark that almost brought the Army of the Potomac to its knees, not the next day's Pickett's Charge. 7. Hood's Texas Brigade - the title says it all. I think we all wish you good reading! --Gael

  28. I think that the economy, the conquest and the player interaction requires creation of resource rich regions that gives access to more than one nation. On one hand this will lessen the conflict on the nation level, however will bring players to one area for the specific resource, thus creating a point of interest or... a conflict zone. Today we have 1 nation holding Live Oak for example. Other nations don't really show up in that region until that region is conquested. The new approach will bring the entire server to a smaller area of the map in search for a specific resource. The conflict on the nation level will be created over a resource rich regions that grow/produce more than one resource as per map below. Trade Hubs will also create point of conflict and bring people together. You will have to use those Trade Hubs in order to access the Market globally, thus brings another conflict zone around actual Trade Hubs and routes.

  32. Hi all, I recently saw that once again someone has suggested the inclusion of division commander during battles, and the equally valid opposing view (that they are one more thing to manage when you are trying to coordinate a 60+ unit army) was raised as well. I would like to propose a means of inclusion that satisfies both viewpoints. In many ways, this game is a spiritual successor to Civil War General and CWG2. In that game, the corps commander was portrayed, like in UG:CW, as a standalone unit on the field with a radius of benefit (or malus, based upon the general's skill, but that's a discussion for another time). In contrast, division commanders were indicated by a gold star on one of the brigades of that division, indicating it was the brigade to which the division commander was attached. I propose a similar solution here, where in the camp screen you are able to select which brigade to attach each division commander to, where they might provide a very small additional bonus for their presence to the brigade they are with, and a minuscule bonus to units from their division in close proximity (to encourage keeping a division together). On the battlefield, the brigade in question would have an additional name along with its given name, to indicate the presence of the division commander, for example "Iron Brigade / Reynolds". This would apply to enemy units as well, as you would see where their division commanders were once you engaged that brigade. Likewise, the only way a division commander could be killed was if the unit he is with was engaged, so you at least can keep them "safe" by keeping that brigade out of combat should you wish. No micromanagement, yet the division leaders would be present on the battlefield.

  37. Just out of interest, why were some Brigades so well known and frankly didn't break like tinbits. I mean, didn't they all have similar training (or lack thereof)? I'm thinking about the Iron Brigade and Stonewall Brigade here. Was it really due so much to the personality and ability of the Brigade commander, or were there other factors?

  38. Well.If you stop eating the BBQ, you can enjoy Tex-Mex. And when you're tired of Tex-Mex, you can go enjoy a steak. Yes, we like steak down here. And when you're done with that, chicken fried steak, fried chicken, and all the fixins. And then, we can go out for all the imported foods in Houston. Almost anything you can name, we got it. 41. The new hard campaign has a reduced difficulty now (ennemy strength is only +15% instead of 25%) which makes it a bit easier : AI has improved imo and apart from a few scenarios he'll make better use of his numbers. I'd encourage those how struggled / did'nt enjoy fighting doom stacks before to retry Major General (from the start) and see how it goes.

  44. What we need is to drop region conquest but instead use the older single port conquest!! Then all nation's have a chance at grabbing single ports with live oak etc.

  45. Yes, the American-Mexican War would be epic. Just covered that in my world history class not too long ago!

  46. I would love to see an American Revolution of this game. Something about those red coats in lined infantry marching to drum and fife takes me to a place where I feel like I'm actually there! Of course I would command the Continentall Army. 'Merica.
